Wicks Stifles Sod Poodles at Riverview

SP Jordan Wicks retired the first ten men he faced, struck out six of them (14 swing & miss), and combined with five relievers on a four-hitter, Pete Crow-Armstrong lined a double into the RF corner, stole 3rd, and scored a run in the 1st inning, reached base on a bunt single in the 3rd, and singled again in the 5th, Miguel Amaya lofted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in RF in the 1st to drive-in PCA, singled in the 3rd, doubled and scored in the 8th, and caught all nine innings and threw out a runner attempting to steal, Chase Strumpf banged a double off the top of the LF fence (near HR) in the 4th and scored on a Luis Verdugo RBI single, ripped a double into the LF corner in the 6th, and walked in the 8th, and Jordan Nwogu singled in the 2nd and roped a two-run single in the 8th, as the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) defeated the Amarillo Sod Poodles (Diamondbacks AA affiliate) 4-1 in Cactus League minor league camp game action Friday afternoon on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

azbobbop: Wicks FB velo was 92-93 but he was locating it all over the strike zone and got most of his swing & miss with his CH, SL, and CV. He mixed all of his pitches very well and absolutely carved up the Sod Poodles. It was a bit like watching a big league pitcher at work. Also, he worked VERY fast, sort of like Wade Miley. 

Barring injury (or trade), Wicks will very likely be at AAA Iowa no later than mid-season 2023, and he should be in the Cubs MLB starting rotation by this time next year. 

The three best SP I've seen throw this year at minor league camp (stretched out to 50+ pitches) are Jordan Wicks, Riley Thompson, and Porter Hodge (not in any particular order).

I have seen Jackson Ferris throw "live" BP several times but not in a game, most recently a couple of days ago. Two innings. 30 pitches (exactly 15 pitches each inning). Eight swing & miss out of 30 pitches (which is outstanding). There was a home plate umpire calling balls & strikes. 17 strikes (includes foul balls and balls in play) and 13 balls (including three or four sliders that bounced away from the catcher). Only one of the 30 pitches was put into play (a 4-3 GO). Also three foul balls. In summary, I would say his stuff was electric, maybe even unhittable, but he had difficulty throwing strikes, which is why he was pitching in a very controlled environment instead of in a game.     

I know Cade Horton has pitched in at least one Lo-A game (two innings about 30 pitches), maybe more, but I have not seen him pitch. 

Same goes for Mason McGwire. 

The most advanced of the 2022 draftees / NDFA are Connor Noland and Grant Kipp. Noland has been in the South Bend starting rotation all spring and Kipp is in the Myrtle Beach starting rotation. I don't know if Noland will end up at South Bend or Myrtle Beach, but he is fully stretched-out as a SP. Same goes for Kipp. I have seen both of them throw in games and both are definitely ready to rumble. Brandon Birdsell is still in the South Bend group, too, but I have not seen him pitch yet.

hell of a friday night AAA opener for all the "important" iowa hitters except for b.davis who went 0-4.

a.sampson was wild and also gave up hits (4ip 6h 4bb 2k, 4r/3er), but he only gave up 1 homer if anyone is looking a bright side.

Only saw two innings cuz I had to get home for the Iowa 🏀 upset of SoCar (Caitlin Clark throws out first pitch here on 6/3). Only took 3 batters for Sampson to get homered, but in fairness the wind was HOWLING out in the direction Naylor nailed his drive. Morel hit leadoff & played RF & he is exciting! Triple in the 1st, two-run single in the second & just exudes joy at all times. 1st inning double by Mervis was off a lefty. Davis slotted 6th in this lineup which seems fairly stacked.

Also, first impression of robo ump? If you didn’t know they were using it you wouldn’t guess. I caught the umps on their way into the ballpark & asked what they think of it & they basically shrugged & said “ as long as we get full pay, fine by us…”

I stand somewhat corrected: “The biggest changes fans may notice are likely to happen when ABS is not being used in games Friday through Sunday. During those games, umpires will detremine balls and strikes on their own. But each team is allowed three challenges. The challenges must come from the pitcher, catcher or hitter. Win the challenge, and the team retains the ability to challenge. The Principal Park videoboard will then show a replay of the pitch for fans to see, just like tennis does with balls in or out of bounds. Bernabe believes it has the potential to add to the on-field excitement.”

    I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

    Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets. 

     

    So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

    ...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug

    morel played SS last night (no errors)...hit a homer and a double.  he's got 2 of both in 19PA.

    e.escobar was throwing 95-97mph on his fastball in 2023.

    One more thing about Edwin Escobar. Even though he had accrued less than one year of MLB Service Time prior to signing with Nippon Ham in 2017 (he ended up eventually with Yokohama), he will have Article XIX-A rights by virtue of the seven seasons he spent in Japan. So he will be essentially locked on the 40-man roster (or at least he can't be outrighted without his consent), and he will be a FA whenever his contract expires.

    Also, Pirates were supposedly in on Escobar, too, so if the Cubs sign him to a minor league contract there is a very good chance that the Pirates will select him in the Rule 5 Draft. So even though it means he would take up a slot on the 40, it better be a major league contract if the Cubs don't want to lose him right after signing him!
