Seiya Suzuki Makes 2023 Game Debut at Extended Spring Training

Porter Hodge and Frankie Scalzo Jr combined to hurl a shutout and strike out eleven, Anderson Suriel ripped a two-run double and an RBI triple, walked, stole a base, and scored a run, and Carlos Ramos drilled a single and a bases-clearing bases-loaded double, as the EXST Cubs Red Squad blanked the EXST Cubs Blue Squad 10-0 in Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action Monday morning on Field # 6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Seiya Suzuki (on Cubs MLB 10-day IL with a strained left oblique) made his 2023 game debut, playing RF for five innings and going 1-2 at the plate (HBP and a 6-4-3 DP).

Ezequiel Pagan (knee surgery) also made his 2023 game debut, serving as a DH and going 0-2 (K, BB, K).

Hodge and Scalzo (as well as Blue Squad SP Sam Thoresen) were getting a final tune-up before the South Bend Cubs leave town. (The other pitchers who threw in the game are assigned to the Extended Spring Training group).

In EXST roster news, OF Ke'Shun Collier has been moved down to the Extended Spring Training group from the Lo-A Myrtle Beach squad.

swinging, running, looking good doing it.  nice.  i really want him to be less timid in RF this year.  he is too timid when an IF'r or CF'r gets near him and he's a much better player than this.  i'm not advocating being aggressively reckless, but he can dial back the fear of commitment to the play a bit more.

AZ Phil,

Have you seen Riley Thompson around the backfields?  He was on the Iowa Cubs roster but now he's off the roster. He's not mentioned in Transactions either. He didn't make the TN initial roster today. He, Herz and Zach Leigh are hopefully flying out to teams soon. Ben Leeper had surgery. His third. Hope he recovers quickly. Stinks though. Hodge made TN roster. Good for him

childersb3: I have no idea what happened to Riley Thompson, When AAA Iowa left town last week he was firmly ensconced in the I-Cubs starting rotation.

Leigh and Herz threw "live" BP last weekend, and then Leigh threw a bullpen yesterday and Herz threw a bullpen today.

Casey, Carraway, Montano and Sierra threw "live" BP today.

Remy, E.  Nunez, Clarke, Gonsalves, Correa, McGwire, and Reid threw bullpens today.

The starting pitchers in today's intrasquad game (Palencia and Noland) are in the Tennessee (Palencia) and South Bend (Noland) starting rotations, but they remained in Mesa after their teammates left town so that they could get one more start in Arizona and get their pitch counts up to near 60. Same goes for Kachmar (Tennessee) and Arias (Myrtle Beach).

When in doubt, ask Phil.

My mental default was "a play on the field" ("sticky stuff") gets a player suspension as 'can not be replaced on the roster', but "off the field" ("drug suspension/civil strife") can be replaced.

When Anthony Rendon gets suspended, is his "on the field, but after the game", replacement-eligible or not? TIA.

Ed Howard is taking about 15 minutes of ground balls at SS every day, and he and Ezequiel Pagan hit against Brandon Hughes in his "live" BP in the stadium on Sunday. I have not seen Howard run the bases, however.

Also, when Ezequiel Pagan was a DH in the intrasquad game yesterday, he did not run the bases. When he drew a walk, Alexis Hernandez was the designated "special" pinch-runner for Pagan.

Porter Hodge got moved up from South Bend to Tennessee off his dominating performance in yesterday's EXST intrasquad game. Right now I would say Hodge is probably the Cubs #1 pitching prospect, and I suspect the Cubs feel the same way. Ben Brown and Jordan Wicks are probably 2-3, then Daniel Palencia. I guess Cade Horton would be #5(?).

Also, as I have mentioned here previously, Connor Noland is the most-advanced of the 2022 draft picks. He is in the South Bend starting rotation, and has been all spring. He is a VERY polished pitcher with a legit SP arsenal.

He's totally dependent in that splitter. But I won't worry about it until mid March.

    smyly going tomorrow.

Would you take Wisdom over Cooper if both were healthy? Power over steadiness?

  • Eric S (view)

That throw was very concerning. Maybe he still was second guessing not throwing to second base and instead thought throwing towards the first base side dugout was the best option.

  • crunch (view)

forget the error on the shaw throw (from 2nd)...the velocity on the throw (made on the move) was as terrible as it was wide, even for a 2nd baseman.

wicks again but not jameson taillon or imanaga yet?

    i hate to tin foil...NONETHELESS...

is wicks being thrown to the wolves to determine whether he's trutsted enough to snag that 5 slot or the cubs -might- need to add another starter?  getting some vibes over here...

Childersb3: Because Edwards, Peralta, and Cooper are post-2023 Article XX-B MLB free agents who signed 2024 minor league contracts, they have automatic opt outs on Opening Day if not added to the 40 by that time. So they are essentially injury insurance and likely won't make the Cubs Opening Day 26-man roster unless there is an injury.

So Peralta probably has a chance to make the team only if something bad happens to Busch, Happ, Bellinger, and/or Tauchman during Spring Training, Cooper has a chance probably only if something bad happens to Morel and/or Wisdom, and Edwards has a chance to make the team if something bad happens to Neris, Alzolay, and/or Merryweather.

Meanwhile they can play in MLB Cactus League Spring Training games and show what they have to offer to the other MLB clubs (or even to NPB and KBO clubs) in case it turns out the Cubs don't need them and they opt-out at the end of Spring Training.

It’s nice having a farm system where the rosters aren’t loaded with minor league filler.

Phil and I are together on the lack of faith in Leiter.

He better get that splitter going asap.

If Canario and PCA don't make the OD roster, look at the Iowa roster here:

    C Windham/Veteran

    1B Mervis/Bote

    2B Strumpf/Cantrelle

    SS Vazquez/Cantrelle

    3B Murray/Slaughter

    LF Davis/DHill

    CF PCA/Roederer

    RF Canario/Caissie

    DH Caissie

I thought their lineup last year was loaded

    This is ridiculous

Rotation: Brown, Wicks, Kilian, RThompson, maybe Wesneski and Horton soon

    Not bad at all
