Cubs vs. Marlins: Series Thread (Games 32-34)

The Cubs get a quick rematch against the Marlins, who swept them on the road to end the month of April. This time, the Cubs are reinforced by designated hitter and first baseman Matt Mervis, who is likely to make his MLB debut, and catcher Miguel Amaya, who debuted on May 4 collecting his first MLB RBI on a sac fly but still in search of his first time reaching base safely. See below for the matchups in this weekend series at Wrigley.

Game 32, Friday, May 5, 1:20 pm central

MIA: RHP Edward Cabrera (2-2, 4.67 ERA)

CHC: LHP Justin Steele (4-0, 1.49 ERA)

Cabrera worked around some command problems in the first inning and collected 12 strikeouts to defeat the Cubs on April 29. He looked nigh untouchable from the second inning on, commanding his mid-90s fastball and mixing it with a plus curve and plus changeup.

Steele has continued an extremely strong run while generally staying under the radar. He went six innings in a no-decision on April 30, allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out three. It was his least dominant start of the season so far. However, he continued to start batters with a strike the majority of the time and has continued to get solid chase and swinging strike rates even despite collecting fewer strikeouts than in previous starts.

Game 33, Saturday, May 6, 1:20 pm central

MIA: RHP Bryan Hoeing (0-1, 6.23 ERA)

CHC: LHP Drew Smyly (3-1, 2.83 ERA)

Hoeing had a much improved second start of the season , going five innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out four and allowed no homeruns.

The Nationals aided Smyly in a relatively quick and easy seven innings by putting the ball in play a lot. Smyly collected only two strikeouts in his seven innings of work, but also walked none and allowed only six hits, with the only run scoring on a solo homer. The Cubs offense and bullpen couldn't provide enough support to get him a win. When the Nats swung at pitches in the zone, they made contact 100% of the time. Smyly responded by throwing his four-seamer less than 30% of the time and going primarily to his curve and fairly frequently to his cutter.

Game 34, Sunday, May 7, 1:20 pm central

MIA: RHP Sandy Alcantara (1-3, 5.09 ERA)

CHC: RHP Hayden Wesneski (2-1, 4.45 ERA)

The Cubs dodged Alcantara last time around. 2023 has gotten off to a bit of a rough start for the righty, who has been dominant in the past two seasons and topped 200 innings in each, a rare feat of late. This season is command has been a bit off and he's allowed slightly more contact in the air compared to when he's at his best. His fastball is coming in as hard as ever, and he still features a strong changeup he goes to about a quarter of the time.

Like Smyly, Wesneski had a hard time sneaking the ball by the Nationals' lineup without allowing contact. He went six innings while also allowing only one earned run, collecting only two strikeouts on the way. Pitch tracking says he threw his changeup over 15% of the time, by far the most of any of his starts so far.

leiter jr with the save.  mervis went 1-4 (single) with 2 Ks.  he wasn't challenged at 1st defensively, but he didn't look bad.

steele is 5-0 and is very much in the too-early-to-care cy young race.

d.ross tried to make that happen last year.  it didn't work out well compared to his work in other situations, but he saw something in the guy.  i was legit shocked when he was let go and arguably a bit more shocked that the cubs managed to let 29 other teams take a shot at him only to get him back for 2023.

STL manages to lose their 7th in a row.  10-23 record.  wow.  worst in the NL, 3rd worst in all of MLB.

STL has removed contreras from C duties "for a few weeks" and plan on working him more at DH/OF.

...as if that's the problem with the pitching.  i'm not much for laying a heavy amount of wins/losses on manager impact, but firing the manager before trying to pin the pitching woes on contreras would probably be a better idea.  contreras hasn't been awesome, but he's been good enough and above average and throwing out + holding baserunners.

For those interested in the Stl moving Contreras to DH/OF situation, I suggest reading the many comments below the MLBTR cover piece. Catcher stats have always been considered somewhat limited but it’s not about pitch blocking or throwing with Willy.

My favorite comment was (paraphrasing): I wasn’t a fan of the contract but it should work out better than the Fowler contract did for the Cards.
I’d love to see AZ Phil’s take on the Cardinals decision about Contreras.

whole thing is getting weird...this from today... "Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told The Athletic on Sunday that Willson Contreras will not play in the outfield this season."

he's a good hitter for a catcher, but the cards kinda need that DH slot for their slew of OF bats.  i guess adding him to the OF mix would be more of a mess and a step back defensively.

just noticed m.amaya wears pearls.  modern swag is interesting stuff.  cubs have had 2 players now in recent times wearing pearls over gold.

STL loses 8 in a row.  10-24 record.  this is a weird trainwreck.  they need 2 weeks of wins just to get back to .500...

wesn had a terrible 5th (though only 1 run scored).  he bounced back for a 1-2-3 6th, including a K.  nice.

cubs on letting morel destroy AAA rather than bringing him up...

"And he doesn't catch or pitch," Ross quipped. "So I think, just continue to let him develop and get better at baseball. And that's not just offensively -- that's every area. Those moments will come when we're going to need somebody down there. And if he's swinging the bat like he is right now, he would definitely be the guy."

"Chris is playing awesome, and he's obviously great in the clubhouse," Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said. "And he's going to have a huge impact on this team. I do think he's benefiting from playing every day. When there's a path to playing a lot, I think it's no question he'll be up here."

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).
