Roederer and Howard Provide the Power for Cubs at American Family Fields

Cole Roederer belted a solo HR in the top of the 2nd inning and collected another RBI on a FC in the 6th, Ed Howard singled and scored in the 1st and smacked a solo HR in the 5th, and SP Carlos Garcia hurled three innings of one-hit shutout ball with four strikeouts for the Cubs, and Reidy Mercado (RBI double) and Jason Ollarve (two-run triple) drilled run scoring hits for the Brewers in a three-run 8th, as the two teams played to a 5-5 tie in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Thursday morning on Field #3 at American Family Fields in Phoenix, AZ.

Recently called up from the Cubs Dominican Academy, RHP Gabriel Agrazal made his U. S. stateside debut in the game. His swing & miss pitch is a - VERY - slow CV that almost looks like an "eephus" pitch.

In EXST Cubs roster news, C-INF Bryce Windham has completed his brief rehab at Extended Spring Training and has been reinstated by the Iowa Cubs. (He played in only one EXST game). Also, C Tim Susnara (on AA Tennessee 60-day IL) has been released. (Susnara was the catcher for most of the "live" BP outings thrown by Kyle Hendricks and Codi Heuer at Sloan Park when they were at Extended Spring Training).

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

DJL: The Cubs are attempting to create a stable of "Nasty Boyz" from within so that they don't have to sign a FA closer or trade for one. Not all of the high-leverage candidates will work out, so best course of action is to cast a wide net, keep an open mind, and see what develops.

Patience and fungibility is an important aspect of this process, so that the candidates can be moved back & forth between MLB and AAA as needed while they are developing.

Remember, the best closers in Cubs history (Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith) were developed from within.

pretty damn bold to let neris close a game after recent performances...nailed it, though.

Very much so. It was noticeable to us just watching, they definitely knew. Hopefully that’s a good sign and it won’t be long term.

ben brown out of the pen in the 7th.

guess we now know his current fate.

for a good chunk of this recent streak you could obviously see he wasn't swinging as hard.  they gotta know that in the dugout, even down to the mph with how much stuff they track these days.

his timing is kinda tuned into how hard he swings.

That hand injury he’s nursing is killing him. And doing no favors for my fantasy team

morel hits his 2nd hit in his last 10 games.

Won and lost 20 in the same year too. Quite a feat!

I agree, I watched a few innings of a Tigers game a few days ago and he does look like he’s put on a few pounds this year.

    Wilber Wood?

Started both games of a DH. Problem solved.

alright, i'm gonna take that on.

hendricks as a closer...you obviously got started on 4/20 celebrations way before I did today.
