Cubs @ Phillies: Series Thread (Games 44-46)

The Cubs' offense tallied seven walks and thirteen hits, but pushed across one too few runs to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Astros. They fly into Philly with a record of 19-24. Nico Hoerner is expected to return to the active roster this weekend, and Cody Bellinger remains listed day-to-day after injuring his knee following a leaping catch at the wall in Houston. The 20-23 Phillies are coming off four losses in a row and have sunk to fourth in the NL East. See below for matchups.

Game 44, Friday, May 19, 6:05 pm central

CHC: RHP Marcus Stroman (2-4, 3.24 ERA)

PHI: LHP Ranger Suarez (0-0, 6.75 ERA)

The Cubs take advantage of a Thursday off and roll their rotation back to the top without a fifth starter. Stroman got knocked around in Minnesotat and allowed seven earned runs without reaching the third inning. He'll reset and look to get more of that contact directed to the infield dirt.

Suarez made his MLB debut way back in 2018 but started for a whole season for the first time in 2022. He's had strong showings the last two years, proving to be an effective groundballer. This will be his second start of the season.

Game 45, Saturday, May 20, 3:05 pm central

CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (0-2, 6.66 ERA)

PHI: RHP Aaron Nola (3-3, 4.53 ERA)

Taillon made his second start since returning from the IL and was not permitted to reach the fifth inning. He struck out only one batter in 4.2 innings pitched and allowed seven hits in that time.

Staff ace Aaron Nola is in his walk year having already been a key contributor to the Phillies going back to 2015. He's made nine starts so far. His fastball is down a tick and he's striking out far fewer opponents than usual. He has yet to see a scoreless start.

Game 46, Sunday, May 21, 12:35 pm central

CHC:  LHP Justin Steele (6-1, 2.44 ERA)

PHI: TBD

Houston was unkind to Cubs pitchers, and for once Steele was not the exception. He took his first loss of the season having allowed five earned runs on five hits and a walk in six innings. The outing was more unfortunate than a bad one. His overall performance continues to be strong. He matched a season high eight strikeouts while walking only one.

phillies gonna start t.walker vs cubs sunday on 3 days rest...threw 40 pitches and didn't last through the 1st inning last time out.

taillon loads the bases with 0 out in the 1st...crazy.  i considered his signing a hell of a steal at 4/68m.  hope this straightens itself out...

I wonder if the Taillon signing was with the thought process of trading Stroman this year, and maybe even Hendricks and/or Smiley? I just would have put in mutual options for years three and/or four, but hindsight is 20/20.......

morel hits homers.  7 in 10 games.  dude should be a lock for 110+ homers a season if they play him everyday.

Once Bellinger comes back (prayerfully soon), Morel should be the DH/3B exclusively (I would even argue he has the potential to be better defensively than Wisdom), and then spell Swanson and Hoerner on their days off; so no more Madrigal, he should really be DFA'd and traded to someone who want to give us a little something to ease Jed's ego, so he doesn't have to admit targeting Madrigal was a mistake. This Zobrist fantasy being forced on Morel is just ludicrous, like when they decided to 'unlock' Killian, when he was straight dealing, and now look............

hendricks got up to 82 pitches today...6 innings, 5h, 6k, 0bb, 1 run...should be ready for the bigs now.

morel hits homers, blah blah blah...cubs still out there losing games.  this is getting old.  2-7 road trip...

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
