Cubs vs. Diamondbacks: Series Thread (Games 141-144)

The Cubs swept the Giants to climb to 1.5 games back both in the NL Central and behind the Phillies for the top NL Wild Card spot. Moreover, the offense showed up for this series, with Bellinger and Suzuki staying hot and benefitting from support throughout the lineup. Twenty-two games remain to land a preferable playoff position. They host the Wild Card hopeful Arizona Diamondbacks starting this Thursday. See below for matchups in the four-game series.

Game 141, Thursday, September 7, 6:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Javier Assad (3-2, 2.69 ERA)
ARZ: RHP Ryne Nelson (6-7, 5.47 ERA)

Game 142, Friday, September 8, 1:20 pm central
CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (7-9, 5.73 ERA)
ARZ: RHP Zack Gallen (14-7, 3.48 ERA)

Game 143, Saturday, September 9, 1:20 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (16-3, 2.55 ERA)
ARZ: RHP Merrill Kelly (11-6, 3.22 ERA)

Game 144, Sunday, September 10, 1:20 pm central
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (5-7, 3.73 ERA)
ARZ: RHP Brandon Pfaadt (1-8, 6.27 ERA)

every win is needed, but it's nice to lose one in september that doesn't sting.  2 back in the NL Central, +3 in the 2nd WC slot.

Are Canario and Little the first players to appear as Cubs that were born this century?

Sorry to be THAT guy, but the first day of the 21st century was January 1, 2001. Centuries end on the last day of the year ending with the numbers 00. I'm a teacher. Had to do it. ;)

masterboney and madrigal hitting back to back with a man on 1st and down by 1 run late.  someone please take these guys away from d.ross.  who the hell sees a situation like this and is like "wow, let's send to the plate guys who's ceiling is "might hit a single""...well, besides d.ross.

nico 1st to home on a missed infield popup...running all the way, not jogging or going casual.  proper payoff for not assuming an easy out.  love it.

…and Wesneski STILL can’t get lefties out. Faced three righties and one lefty - got three outs (all righties) and gave up one hit (guess which one).

merryweather gets his 1st cubs save.

swanson joins bellinger/morel/wisdom with 20+ homers.  happ (17) and suzuki (16) have a shot to join them.

3 @COL starting tomorrow.

Brewers lose 3-1 lead on 2run HR by Stanton in the 11th. Now bottom of 13 at 3-3. Was a no no for 8 innings by Burnes.
…and Brewers lose in 13, 4-3. Phillies had already lost to the Marlins.

all in all, a nice recovery day for what was a tough weekend.

ooof...jassssssson dominguez (NYY) torn ucl in his throwing arm and will get surgery for it.  not a fan of the yanks, but they cannot catch a break this year.

PCA gets the call up per Jeff Passan.

40 man roster move pending.

They won't DFA any arms that were on the 40man before Sept 1st. They need to keep as many options as possible if they make the playoffs.
Except for Boxberger. He could definitely be DFA'd.
They bring Keegan back up, or even promote Ben Brown, and add PCA to the 40man.
If not Boxberger than probably JYoung.
PCA replaces Canario or Mastrobuoni on the 26man?
Probably Canario.

Keegan Thompson cannot be recalled in September through the conclusion of the MLB regular season until he has spent at least 15 days on Optional Assignment unless he replaces a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, paternity, bereavement, etc).

As far as who the Cubs might drop to make room on the 40 for PCA, Jeremiah Estrada is at instructs, and while his breaking ball is plus, he cannot command his FB at all.

Also keep in mind that there will very likely be at least two injured post-season eligible players (Codi Heuer and Ethan Roberts) the Cubs will be able to replace with any player - REGARDLESS OF POSITION - who was in the  organization but not on the MLB 26-man roster as of midnight 8/31, including Luke Little, PCA, Alexander Canario, and Matt Mervis.

Well they didn't DFA Boxberger. I was trying my all to speak that into existence. Kay is DFA'd to make room for PCA. Canario back to Iowa.

I really don't want to watch a RH RP with 90 or less velo stuff in mid to late Sept during a playoff race. Jed you cut Hosmer, Mancini and Barnhart. Time for Box to go as well.

AZ Phil explained Keegan can't come up for several more days so maybe Ben Brown gets a chance. I'll try to speak that into existence now.

good.  really really really sick of seeing mike tachman having 1-2 good games then 5-10 bad ones in a row and getting a chance to repeat it.  unlike 1 PA canario, i expect PCA to actually get work.

PCA/hoerner 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup could be the making of an interesting combo.

COL going with a lefty tonight.  might not see PCA til tomorrow.

Ross won't let PCA get a ton of ABs b/c he cannot play in the playoffs.
As Cubs fans we know he should probably get a chance to play in order to help us make the playoffs, but Ross is "always thinking ahead of us fans".

If Candy is out for a while then Madrigal gets all 3B ABs.
You'd guess that Belli gets all 1B ABs (maybe Wisdom gets a few).
Therefore Tauchman or PCA in CF.
If he plays PCA more than Tauchman now he'll be admitting that PCA should've been up sooner over Tauchman.

Now, I'll admit that Jed/Ross have let some veterans go this year. But they definitely give them a long leash!!!

Childersb3: Pete Crow-Armstrong - CAN - play in the post-season because he can replace either Ethan Roberts or Codi Heuer on the Cubs Post-Season Eligibility List. Same goes for Luke Little.

I mention only Roberts and Heuer as likely to be replaced because I don't think the Cubs will replace Brandon Hughes or Nick Burdi since they are likely to be re reinstated from the 60-IL in the near future.

So if a club wishes to replace a player who was on the club's Post-Season Eligibility List as of midnight 8/31 because the player is injured, the club must replace the player prior to the first game of the post-season, and once the replacement player is added to the Post Season Eligibility List, that player cannot be switched out for a different  player.

So if PCA replaces Roberts and Luke Little replaces Heuer, then that's that. It cannot be changed.

And again, a pitcher does NOT have to replace a pitcher and a a position player does NOT have to replace a posItion player.

he's wearing this one for life whether he likes it or not.  you can't pull a brant brown in the last week of the season when it's 4 teams going for 2 playoff spots...especially with your last games going forward vs teams that are 1st place in their division.

he might as well do whatever it takes to move on because it's part of the drama of this chase for the post-season no matter how the cubs do here on out.

  • Arizona Phil 09/27/2023 - 09:33 pm (view)

FWIW, the year Brant Brown dropped the fly ball in Milwaukee the Cubs made the playoffs anyway, although they did have to play a tie-breaker play-in game with the Giants at Wrigley Field to get in as the N. L. Wild Card team (there was only one Wild Card team in each league back then)...

Ron Santo's voice came out of me while watching.

I am really hoping for a bounce back by Suzuki tonight. That error in that moment could really get in your head -- and unfairly shift the public perception of the player for a long time.

    F NOLDARAN:

The Cubs have no control with respect to Marcus Stroman or Drew Smyly exercising their player options for 2024.

Stroman will get $21M in 2024 if he exercises his player option and Smyly gets $10.5M in 2024 (includes a $2M salary escalator based on IP in 2023) if he exercises his player option (both likely, especially Smyly).

Kyle Hendricks has a $16M club option for 2024 or else a $1.5M buy-out, and it remains to be seen if the Cubs will exercise the option (which is really just a $14.5M savings because of the buy-out). I would think the Cubs will exercise the club option, because they can always trade him.

Also, the Cubs will be paying performance bonuses post-2023 to Yan Gomes (either $250K or $500K based on games started at catcher) and Smyly ($2M based on IP). Also, Cody Bellinger gets as $1M bonus if he wins N. L. Comeback Player of the Year Award (which is very likely).

So with the $3M+ in performance bonuses still to be paid, the Cubs 2023 payroll AAV will likely end up just slightly under the 2023 MLB $232M CBT threshold, possibly within $1M (TBD).

BTW, as things stand right now it appears that the Cubs will have somewhere in the vicinity of $30M in 2024 salary to spend on additions to the roster (I am presuming that Bellinger will opt-out, that Stroman and Smyly will not opt out, that the Cubs will pick up the club options on Hendricks and Gomes but will not pick-up the club option on Brad Boxberger, and that the Cubs will tender 2024 contracts to only three or four of the arbitration eligible guys -- Steele and Alzolay for sure, probably Merryweather, plus MAYBE Tauchman and/or Leiter), with Nick Burdi, Codi Heuer, Nick Madrigal, and Patrick Wisdom likely to be non-tendered (or traded prior to being non-tendered if another club is interested).

However, I suspect that the Cubs will attempt to re-sign Heuer and Burdi -- and Tauchman and/or Leiter if they are non-tendered -- to 2024 minor league contracts with an NRI to Spring Training. Brandon Hughes and Ethan Roberts are not arbitration-eligible but they also are likely to be non-tendered and then the Cubs will attempt to sign them to 2024 minor league contracts with an NRI to Spring Training.

MLB Contract Tender Day this year is November 17th (the Friday immediately prior to Thanksgiving), so I expect to see a lot of transaction-related activity at that time throughout MLB.

However, the deadline to add Rule 5 eligible players to the MLB 40-man roster is PRIOR TO MLB Contract Tender Day, so the Cubs will need to drop as many players from the 40 as roster slots are needed PRIOR TO MLB Contract Tender Day.

The players presently on the 40 who are most likely to be Designated for Assignment (and outrighted if not claimed) to clear slots on the 40 prior to MLB Contract Tender Day for Rule 5 Draft eligibles would probably be Michael Rucker, Jared Young, Jeremiah Estrada, and Caleb Kilian (in that order), although the Cubs could also just DFA one or more of the players they have  already decided to non-tender and not re-sign (like Madrigal and/or Wisdom, and maybe Leiter and/or Tauchman).

At 9 AM (Eastern) on the day after the final game of the World Series (two or three weeks prior to MLB Contract Tender Day) is when unsigned MLB Article XX-B players are automatically declared free-agents (they do NOT have to file, it's automatic), so that's when Bellinger, Boxberger, Candelario, and Fulmer will be removed from the Cubs MLB 40-man roster, and then at 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series is when all players still on a club's MLB 60-day IL (Burdi,  Heuer, Hughes, and Roberts) are automatically reinstated to the 40-man roster.

So by 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series, the Cubs 40-man roster will likely be full (subtracting free-agents Bellinger, Boxberger, Candelario, and Fulmer, and adding Burdi, Heuer, Hughes, and Roberts back from the 60-day IL).

5 PM Eastern on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series is also the point in time when unsigned minor league players eligible to be a post-2023 MLB Rule 9 6YFA are automatically declared free-agents, unless the player is added to the MLB 40-man roster or has signed a 2024 minor league successor contract. This will impact the Cubs with respect to OF Yonathan Perlaza and SS Luis Vazquez (two legit prospects who are eligible to be minor league free-agents post-2023).
