Cubs vs. Pirates: Series Thread (Games 151-153)

Following a day off on Monday, the Cubs begin their final homestand of the season. They need to put a devastating road trip behind them, as they have only twelve games left to scratch their way to a Wild Card position. They begin the homestand in a virtual tie with the Cincinnati Reds for the last NL Wild Card spot. Mathematically, the division is still in play as they are six games back of the Brewers and finish with a three game set in Milwaukee. They'll begin six at home with three games against the Pirates. See below for matchups--such as they stand with the Pirates utilizing the element of surprise (and likely at least one "opener").

Game 151, Tuesday, September 19, 6:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Javier Assad
PIT: TBD

Game 152, Wednesday, September 20, 6:40 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele
PIT: TBD

Game 153, Thursday, September 21, 6:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks
PIT: TBD

barring setbacks, candel is expected to return to the lineup "next week" and may return as early as this weekend.

Game under rain delay.

I see umbrellas on the Wrigley Marquee webcam

Also, Madrigal to IL, Jared Young called up.

Young at Iowa:

In 90 games in Triple-A, Young has slashed .310/.417/.577, amounting to a .995 OPS with 16 doubles, 21 home runs and 50 walks.

5ip 3h 1bb 7k, 0r/er for c.horton in AA tonight (71 pitches)...a lot of swing and miss strikes, too.  dude is looking like a legit "sometime in 2024" option.

p.wisdom...still not a 1st baseman.  hope he can handle this infield's arms.  about time we got to see more of morel at 3rd.  hope he gets a few plays and i hope i don't regret wanting to see him get a few plays.

acuna (ATL) hit HR 38+39.  he's 1 away from joining the 40/40 club (though he has 66 SB).  he almost did it back in 2019 (41 HR, 37 SB).

last member was a.soriano (WAS, 2006).  he would be the 5th since j.canseco made it a thing back in 1988.

another outing by smyly where he's got obvious daylight between his foot and the rubber, not even cozy'ing up to the side/front of the rubber...they're really not calling this one the past few years.  to be fair, a lot of pitchers seem to be getting away with it.

canairo doesn't even need a PA to get an out.  dude just got p.wisdom out on an interference call while in the on-deck circle.

...then he gets his first MLB hit and RBI with a double.  neat.

That's going to make a fun first MLB hit anecdote. Has to be a first ever sequence of its kind.

It also seems like not really his fault on the interference. He would have really had to anticipate that developing to get out of the way. It kind of looked like Hayes saw him there and saw and opportunity to run into him, too.

morel DH, tauchman CF, and hopefully the last masterboney start at 3rd we'll ever see...i'll take wisdom's potential power over these singles-hitting ceiling hitters dross keeps marching out there because of a marginally better glove.

steele giving up 5 straight singles and tommy h on the phone with the bullpen as if the pen is ready to put in 5-6 innings of quality work.

Sucks for Steele, sucks for the Cubs. Hopefully the Cubs get right tomorrow and take the series.

Edit: and if they choose to get right tonight instead and take the series, even better!

madrigal's hamstring strain is a grade 2 strain.  we probably won't see him anymore this season or post-season (if applicable) unless the team goes deep.

morel DH, tauchman CF, masterboney 3rd

imagine a world where a manager decides to put morel at 3rd and canario DH.  crazy, huh?

masterboney had 3 hits yesterday so we're stuck with him again today and probably for a chunk of what's left.

canario had a double and grand slam a couple games ago and he's riding pine again.

Dansby has to be dog tired or something. Other than the basket shot, it’s been a rough go for awhile.

The question now, will the Cubs finish at or above .500?  They need 2 wins in the next 9 games.

suzuki gets HR #20.  he joins bellinger, moral, swanson, and wisdom with 20+.  happ has 19.

btw, the brewers have 1 guy (adames, 24).  they also only have 2 guys with more than 200 PA with an ob% over .340.

bellinger wins comeback player of the year.  the AL winner was liam hendricks and his 5ip before he got tommy john...setting himself up for a 2025 shot at the award.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

    s.gray signs with the cards...3/75m

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug

morel played SS last night (no errors)...hit a homer and a double.  he's got 2 of both in 19PA.

e.escobar was throwing 95-97mph on his fastball in 2023.

One more thing about Edwin Escobar. Even though he had accrued less than one year of MLB Service Time prior to signing with Nippon Ham in 2017 (he ended up eventually with Yokohama), he will have Article XIX-A rights by virtue of the seven seasons he spent in Japan. So he will be essentially locked on the 40-man roster (or at least he can't be outrighted without his consent), and he will be a FA whenever his contract expires.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Also, Pirates were supposedly in on Escobar, too, so if the Cubs sign him to a minor league contract there is a very good chance that the Pirates will select him in the Rule 5 Draft. So even though it means he would take up a slot on the 40, it better be a major league contract if the Cubs don't want to lose him right after signing him!

    Ronald Acuna's cousin.
