Surriel, Morel, and Noriega Lead Pelicans to Victory on Cubs Backfields

Anderson Suriel smacked two RBI doubles and scored a run, Jose Escobar drilled a single and an RBI double and scored a run, Reivaj Garcia laced an RBI single and walked twice, Rafael Morel belted a solo HR, and SP Branden Noriega tossed 2.2 IP of one-hit shutout ball, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans edged the ACL Cubs 5-4 in Spring Training Minor League Camp intrasquad game action Saturday morning on Field # 6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Albert Gutierrez tripled and scored, Geuri Lubo hammered an RBI double and scored a run, and Angel Cepeda collected a double and an RBI single for the ACL Cubs.

The game was pre-planned as a five-inning affair.

All four of the pitchers who threw in the game are assigned to the Myrtle Beach group at Minor League Camp, and they are obviously being stretched out to be used as either a SP or as a multi-inning piggy-backer (all four pitchers threw at least 45 pitches in the game).

Here is the box score from the game:

1. Christian Olivo, CF: 0-3 (4-3, K, 6-3)
2. Yahil Melendez, 2B: 0-3 (K, E-6, E-7 SF, R, RBI)

6. Albert Gutierrez, 1B: 1-3 (3-1 3B, K, R)
7. Yidel Diaz, C: 1-3 (K, 1B, K, R, RBI)
8. Geuri Lubo, LF: 1-3 (F-7, 2B, 6-3, R, RBI)

1. Kenyi Perez: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R (1 ER), 4 BB, 4 K, 54 pitches (25 strikes)
2. Garrett Brown: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 1 WP, 1 GIDP, 3/1 GO/AO, 49 pitches (26 strikes)

"Just because it isn't official doesn't mean it didn't happen"

suzuki not being timid in RF is fuggin awesome.  he didn't shy away from a catch him and bellinger were challenging for in game 1 (bellinger catch).

Yesterday's and today's Cactus League Minor League Spring Training games between the Cubs and Giants were canceled because of rain. However, there will be a "live" BP extravaganza with about two dozen Cubs pitchers throwing to Cubs hitters on Field # 1 as well as on all four backfields later today. (Only the pitchers mounds and home plate area are covered when it rains, so the rest of the field is not playable).

The three Cubs full season affiliates (Tennessee, South Bend, and Myrtle Beach) still at Minor League Camp will be departing Arizona on Wednesday, leaving the Mesa (Extended Spring Training) group and the MESA REHAB group behind.

The Mesa (Extended Spring Training) group and the MESA REHAB group will be combined into one entity (Cubs Extended Spring Training) beginning next Monday.

michael busch is not impressed.  3rd straight game with a homer.

    holy f...that slider/sweeper ex-cub tyson miller has.

    the horizontal movement is insane.

morel with 2 high-quality snags at 3rd base in the 6th going to his right, a weakness of his (though not as weak as his throw accuracy).  both plays saving runs.

imanaga walks back to back batters to the first hitters up in the 6th.  he had 15 innings without a walk coming into the inning.

he gave up his first run earlier in the game, but still hasn't given up an earned run.

    mervis with another homer tonight...

porter hodge made his AAA debut and got the win throwing a scoreless inning in relief...while walking 3 and K'ing 1.

morel in the lineup saturday and playing 3rd.  hand is obviously bothering him, but he's playing.

tauchman gets the DH, because he's left handed or whatever... free game of the day, btw...

TIM: Yes. I would think so. It's not like anybody is blocking him there.

So if PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, Canario, and C. Franklin are the Cubs top five outfield prospects (and all five are definitely in the Cubs Top 30), then Alfonsin Rosario is # 6 (ahead of B. Davis, Roederer, Pagan, and Pinango) and is in my Cubs Top 30 (if not in the Cubs Top 30 at BA,, et al).

Rosario as next to Myrtle Beach as a hitter?

    Thanks, always.

I guess my point is that based on past performance, majors, minors and spring training would more likely than not cement the 4A reputation with a call up, particularly as a part time occasional player.

If he tears up triple A other teams may have different thoughts even without the MLB experience. He lacks prospect pedigree primarily because of the system he’s in. Probably not the centerpiece of a trade but certainly a decent component.

Agreed. Mervis lacks prospect pedigree, and he will likely carry the trade value of a suspected quad-A guy until he shows success at the MLB level.

I also think the Cubs will show interest in a regular DH if it turns out they already have a guy who can fill that role well.
