Cubs @ Atlanta: Series Thread (Games 42-44)

The Cubs improved to 24-17 and travel south for three games in Atlanta. Atlanta is 24-13 and features a potent offense. The Cubs will also be facing the best of their starting rotation. See below for daily matchups.

Game 42, Monday, May 13, 6:20 pm central
CHC: LHP Shota Imanaga (5-0, 1.08 ERA)
ATL: RHP Reynaldo López (2-1, 1.53 ERA)

Imanaga allowed two earned euns in seven innings against the Padres. He struck out eight and walked only one. Losing a tick on his fastball appeared to have little impact on his game.

Originally signed by the Nationals and then spending most of his big league career with the White Sox, López made only 1 start and 128 relief appearances between 2022 and 2023. He had been a decent mid-rotation starter in 2018 and 2019 and his return to the rotation has gone great for Atlanta thus far. He sits mid-90s and uses his slider about 30% of the time.

Game 43, Tuesday, May 14, 6:20 pm central
CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (3-0, 1.13 ERA)
ATL: LHP Chris Sale (5-1, 2.95 ERA)

Lower back tightness kept Taillon from making his last start. Before that, he pitched six scoreless and struck out seven Brewers.

Chris Sale joins Atlanta in the final year of the five-year contract he signed with the Red Sox before the 2020 season. After missing all of 2020, he made 11 starts combined between 2021 and 2022. He did return for twenty starts last year and put up a solid overall performance. This year, he's regained a tick or two on the fastball and looks to be a major contributor for Atlanta.

Game 44, Wednesday, May 15, 6:20 pm central
CHC: TBD
ATL: RHP Charlie Morton (3-0, 3.14 ERA)

Prior to the series, game 44's starter has not yet been set by the Cubs. Wesneski is due up but could be sent to the bullpen in favor of Javier Assad. The Cubs may also opt to shift to a six-man rotation or displace Kyle Hendricks, who returned when Taillon was not available for his last start.

At age 40, Charlie Morton still features a fastball that sits 94 and throws his curveball more often than any other pitch. He allowed one earned run while striking out seven Mets in seven innings in his last start. He's gone at least 5.2 in every start sp far this season.

The Cubs will head home without an offday to begin their homestand of rematches.

13 pitch plate appearance for morel...fouled one off his toe and is in obvious heavy pain during the ab...takes a couple more pitches earning the walk...and he walks toward the dugout without even trying to take 1st.

guys.  quit with the injuries.  k, thnx.

it looks like we may be without morel while having madrigal + masterboney playing at the same time vs a top-threat team.  sigh.

Cubs are reacquiring Tyson Miller from Seattle for Iowa Cub third baseman Jake Slaughter. Miller was outrighted earlier by the Mariners. Don’t remember too much about him but he’s been fairly good this year and he is a healthy arm. That counts for something right now.

Just the kind of acquisition I was hoping to see. Situational pickups, not the farm killing deals Theo preferred. Miller was only let go because someone on Seattle had to go. Slaughter was never going to go anywhere in the Cubs organization. Good under the radar deal for both players and both organizations that could pay big dividends, especially for us.

Lovelady out to make room for Miller.
Pinango was on a flight to TN this morning.  Slaughter leaving opens a spot in Iowa, but Iowa has OFs already. I'd bet one of Roederer, Pagan or Nwogu go down to SB for ABs. It's not like Garriola or Wetzel have earned a spot in SB. Maybe Garriola gets a shot. But one of the five current TN OFs are probably moved to DevelopList or demoted somewhere.
E. Roberts is going to TN as well.  I'm assuming some of this Veteran FA RP at TN will now go to Iowa.  Maybe Nunez or Leigh get a shot a Iowa, instead.

RHRP Eduarniel Nunez was moved-up to AAA Iowa. He had a 0.00 ERA and 0.77 WHIP through 15.2 IP at AA Tennessee. E. Nunez FB velo 96-99 with a high spin rate and a hard-breaking SL. He was the one Cubs minor leaguer eligible to be a 6YFA post-2023 who signed a 2024 successor contract.

surprised morel is in the lineup.  he's DH'ing.

patrick wisdom is hitting leadoff.  that's 8 million dollars worth of managing right there.

marquee is digitally blocking out (poorly) a home depot ad on the back of the pitching mound and digitally adding their own "farmer's dog" advert on the side of the mound.

this...this kind of stuff is why we fans deserve a team that spends on the product on the field.  good job on bellinger, front office crew.  appreciated.

wow that was terrible.

welcome back tyson miller, tho.  2 clean innings 1h 0bb 1k (0r/er)

Luke Little has been recalled. Keegan Thompson to 15-day IL   (illness).

morel is not walking/running around good at all.  even during his ABs he looks like he's using all his will to keep playing.

Anybody here old enough to remember Bill Buckner as a Cub in the 70’s  playing every day despite his destroyed ankle? Would never see anything close to that in today’s game.

Good to see the Cubs are capable of scoring runs in Atlanta.

After seeing continual woeful at bats by the Cubs catchers, thought it would be “fun” to compare the Cubs catcher duo with the Brewers catching duo by Baseball Reference WAR:

Amaya (0.2 bWAR) + Gomes (-0.1) = 0.1 bWAR

Contreras (2.4 bWAR) + Sanchez (0.4) = 2.8 bWAR

Looks about right. I was surprised the Cubs were in positive territory at all.

assad tends to show a decline after 80-90 pitches, but i don't know if there's anyone left who can deny that assad belongs firmly in the rotation even when everyone's healthy...especially in this current moment.

glad he got the shot.  he's making the best of it.

I know they’re managing innings especially for Brown, but I feel like if we’re rolling out our top 5 SP, it includes Assad and Brown, and Wicks would be in Iowa. Wicks is solid and I think will continue to be, but Brown has been awesome and Assad has been our second best SP this year.

110%...unlike the decision to put in t.miller to protect a 4 run lead with 1 on and get the last out of the game.

this is the most over-managed thing i've seen of counsell with the cubs.

Seemed like the right decision from my vantage! 😂

What is this whole clutch hit/score multiple runs thing the Cubs are doing? They can do that? And it’s legal? Nice!

    scoring from 2nd on a 60ft hit...a hit off the pitcher's elbow...ow.

megill walking off the mound towards where the ball was rolling was a poor decision even if he was nope'ing himself out of the game to the dugout.

Vazquez with the heads up running - Cubs could could steal this one back.
