Today in Cubs History: 12-16

12-16-1992 - The Giants name Dusty Baker as manager to replace Roger Craig. (taken from Baseball Library) 12-16-1985 - Traded Billy Hatcher and a PTBNL (Steve Engel) to the Houston Astros. Received Jerry Mumphrey. Wow, I don't have the slightest recollection of Engel at all. Anybody help me here? A very slow news day in Cubs history. Baseball Library lists today as the day we acquired Jimmy Sheckard from the Brooklyn Superbas, but Baseball-Reference lists that date as December 30th, and I'll cover it, then. So another real yawner of a day. Here's a question: What Items do you hope will join the list of events that happened on December 16th, when five years from now it comes time for me to do the December 16th, 2010 TICH edition?

Trans, Hopefully 5 years from now it will read on some december day that the Cubs get Tejada. Dusty supporters will point to the fact Hendry has not provided him his type of players and Tejada is the ultimate Dusty player. He is an aggressive hitter who can run and play solid D. Also Tejada would be the strong clubhouse leader needed by Baker's laisse-fair attiude towards disipline, That is anthor reason why the Pierre trade was good he knows how to go about his buisness and is a low maintance attitude guy.

I envision an Adam Dunn signing - what year would that be? about 2008?

adam who?

"Asked if Corey Patterson could play right field, Hendry replied, "Sure.'' If he plans to make that statement next month at the Cubs' annual fan convention, he would be advised to hire several armed guards to ensure his protection." ha. well, seriously..if that's how they dragged the "patterson in RF" rumor outta him..whatever, no big deal or commitiment. the same article mentions hendry has 2 trade proposals for RF's with teams on the table, though its doubtful either will be taken. it at least opens up dialogue.

This post, right here, is the 70,000th post at TCR. What Should I Say? Ron Cey ruled the 1984 Cubs. We miss you, Harry. Cheese is good. I think that will suffice.

Hey, I remember Jerry Mumphrey, he was actually pretty decent. VERY solid OBP guy. We got him at the end of his career, so his defense and speed were diminished, but he was worth Billy Hatcher.

Average time of a game last season, by ballpark. (Wrigley is way down at the bottom) Stadium Average Yankee Stadium 3:03 Fenway Park 3:01 Camden Yards 2:52 Shea Stadium 2:52 Bank One Ballpark/Chase Field 2:51 Great American Ballpark 2:51 PNC Park 2:51 Coors Field 2:50 Dodger Stadium 2:48 Miller Park 2:48 SBC Park 2:48 Ameriquest Field 2:48 Comerica Park 2:47 Safeco Field 2:47 Dolphins Stadium 2:47 U.S. Cellular Field 2:46 Angel Stadium 2:46 Tropicana Field 2:46 Citizens Bank Park 2:46 Turner Field 2:44 Petco Park 2:43 Kauffman Stadium 2:41 Minute Maid Park 2:41 Busch Stadium 2:41 Jacobs Field 2:40 Rogers Centre 2:40 RFK Stadium 2:40 McAfee Coliseum 2:39 Wrigley Field 2:39 Metrodome 2:35

I heard the same thing about the Patterson rumor. It sounded like the media's way of trying to create news where there isn't any. Plus, Hendry has to give the appearance that he's happy to keep him if he hopes to get even a little value in return for him.

Anyone know what the deal is with mlbtraderumors.com? They've removed all their posts back to Dec. 10.

I think they had to remove everything they made up. That may actually push it back a bit further...

Years from now I'd enjoy reading about how the Cubs got Tejada on this date, as well. Without trading Z or Prior or Lee. Good luck, right? It's time to address the #2 hole in the batting order if Walker's a goner as it appears. Please, not Neifi. I would have really liked to have seen Nomar in the 2-hole. Regarding Corey staying or going: before Ozzie, the Chicago coach/manager I really admired re: team play was and is Scott Skiles. With the Corey situation, what do you think Skiles would do?

I remember Steve Engel. He was one of the starters during the debacle of 1985. We lost ALL five starters that season & he auditioned for one of the spots. He was a little lefty with weak breaking stuff & no fastball. Needless to say, he wasn't around long.

Engle also hit a homerun at the Astrodome (I believe it was the Astodome)which was something that didn't happen much, esp. for a pitcher.

If you've been following the team since pre-1984 and you want to torture yourself, go to Retrosheet and look at the game log for 1985. At one point, the Cubs rotation was Ray Fontenot, Derek Botelho, Lary Sorenson, Jay Baller, and Steve Engel. Other luminaries getting starts that year were Johnny Abrego and Larry Gura. And, of course, the immortal Reggie Patterson.

Dennis, my father took me to that game that Engel started. It was supposed to be Eck starting. I was 14 and it was my 1st time at Wrigley, then they announced Steve Engle as the starter.....funny thing too, when my father took my brother to his 1st game at Wrigley the next year, Scott Sanderson was supposed to start, however he was replaced at game time by the almighty Joe Kramer.

Re # 9 (average time of ballgames): You could use the average number of minutes of a game divided by number of victories by the home team to come up with a "Fan Misery Index". I don't even need to run the numbers to decide that KC (average 161 minutes and 56 wins, for a Fan Misery Index of 2.88) would be the winner. Although they had the longest home games, the Yankees top the Cubs in the FMI, 1.93 to 2.01. What a difference 16 wins makes.

Hey, the Royals may suck, but there's no misery in seeing a game at Kaufman. Even though I'm a Cub fanatic, I live here and go to a good dozen games a year. The tickets are cheap, sightlines are terrific, parking and access are the easiest in the majors. It's literally like seeing a game at a park with the open outfield, my family loves it! Only real beef is that Kaufman food is pretty lousy compared to most ballparks, but the beer is cheap and cold :-)

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.
