Tasty Names Redux

Huh, I had forgotten about This Entry from last Thanksgiving, the All-Food team. For your consuming pleasure, here it is, again, with a few updates. The only eligiblity requirements for the team are that the player: A. has a food-related name B. at some point played for the Cubs C. has a food-related name that is so delicious, and plays a position where the Cubs don't have a home-grown alternative, thus requiring an imaginary trade so that we can complete our roster. There isn't much pitching or infield depth to this team, but you've got to love the outfield...
C - Pickles Dillhoefer 1B - Catfish Metkovich 2B - Rabbit Warstler SS - Rabbit Maranville 3B - Pie Traynor (Acquired by Cubs from the Pittsburgh Pirates) LF - Peanuts Lowrey CF - Turkey Stearns (Acquired by Cubs from the Kansas City Monarchs) RF - Goose Goslin (Acquired by Cubs from the Washington Senators) SP - Steve Trout SP - Noodles Hahn (Acquired by Cubs from the Cincinnati Reds) SP - Doug Bird RP - Goose Gossage RP - Sweetbreads Bailey RP - Ducky Swan (Acquired by Cubs from the Federal League's Kansas City Packers) RP - Herb Brett (thanks to KJK) Backup Corner OF Candy Maldonado Ginger Beaumont (thanks to KJK) Backup MI Bobby Sturgeon (Another KJK discovery) Backup Catchers Damon Berryhill Peaches Graham Porky Pawelek Del Rice Manager - Herman Franks Third Base Coach - Cookie Rojas
And this is all before factoring in Felix Pie and Rocky Cherry, or potential trades for Tim Salmon and Jim Rice, or creative liberties like manager Jim French Frey, Hank Sauer Kraut, or Jeff Pico de Gallo. Several of these names were produced from comments last year, anything new to add?

You can also add to the coaching staff, ex manager in the 60's Cookie Lavagetto or however you spell it.

Didn't manage the Cubs, but we could always sign him to the coaching staff, sure. Two cookies. mmmmm.....

ryne sandburger? no, no. how about a dusty bakery? no, thats dumb. too bad "donuts" isnt really part of rusch's name...

Points for the effort, Matt. Baseball-reference.com is the place to go to hunt for these sorts of things.....

I'm really not sure if I ever would want to eat a rocky cherry..... But yes, with Cherry Pie we have a GREAT farm team.

don't forget your herbs and spices! Herb Brett Pitcher 1924-1925 Ginger Beaumont Outfielder 1910

wow, I'd never seen that before, awesome.... that'll be fun to work through...

The all Z team: 1B: Julio Zuleta 2B - Rollie Zeider 3B - Todd Zeile SS - Heinie Zimmerman (moved from Third) OF - Eduardo Zambrano OF - Dutch Zwilling OF - Don Zimmer (moved from Third) P - Zip Zabel P - Geoff Zahn P - Carlos Zambrano P - Oscar Zamora P - George Zettlein P - Bob Zick

Wow! Larry French and Lonnie Frey were both Cubs in 1937! (Slow day at work)

should be a busy day working from home, but haven't gotten out of PJs yet.

A few more... Ox Miller Pitcher 1947 Mike O'Berry Catcher 1980 Ruben Quevedo Pitcher 2000 Len Rice Catcher 1945 Hal Rice Outfielder 195 Bobby Sturgeon Shortstop 1940-1947

I found the Rices, but totally missed the boat on Ruben... Technically, the spelling is Rueben (hey, I'm from Omaha, we fight with NYC about who invented the sandwich.....) Bobby Sturgeon, awesome....

Ah rueben ... The list hardly comprehensive. I skipped all the Franks and that guy Shad Something. And since this is America, I didn't put in all the exotic foods like Kitty Something and the Fox(x)es. I'm enjoying that History Section of Cubs.com. Just found it today. Some good stuff in there. I hope someday to find a clip of Dave Kingman getting fooled, swinging off balance with one hand, breaking his bat (I think) and still putting it in the center field bleachers. Anyone else remember that?

holy moly a kjk sighting !! next thing you know matt huber will be back and hollering (rightly) for brian roberts. => was "mousse" skowron ever a cub? shoulda, coulda, woulda.....

howdy, DC!

Moose (Mousse, nice) will be on the All Animal team....

... Technically, the spelling is Rueben (hey, I'm from Omaha, we fight with NYC about who invented the sandwich.....) At least no one will argue with you about who came up with the Runza!

Moose (Mousse, nice) will be on the All Animal team.... having gone through the entire database this morning, i'd say this is entirely doable. things get shaky if we try to do that All Body Parts team. this being a family site, mr. tidrow and a hundred other Cubs would probably not be welcome with Bill Hands and Barry Foote...

Gawwwwwdddddd.....Runza gives me really bad gas. How about Larry....stay with me....Bittner??? Play on the name: Bitter Vintner Biter (Southern Iowa vernacular for beer, or Mini-Me depending on your perspective) Wed afternoon is so slow before Turkey Day. Joey

It surprises me how well-known the Runza is. I've never been a big fast food guy, but always liked Runzas, and the fries they serve. I challenge someone to do the all Body Part team, without using more than Two Dicks.

Mmmmmm.....Runzas.

have no idea what a runza is...could it be as good as venison sausage?? (sorry i led a sheltered life)

Dick Pole and a million Johnsons Sounds like the name of a punk band.

Slighty OT, but Steve's comment reminds me of one of my favorite signs at a football game. It was at the HHH Dome and the Vikings QB Warren Moon was injured and Brad Johnson was replacing him. Sign said "If you liked our Moon, you'll love our Johnson."

If I were to make a all body parts team it would be impossible with only listing two Dicks. But I did find pitcher Bill Hands, catcher Barry Foote, and pitcher Seth Moorehead. Then you got Kerry Wood and Todd Dunwoody. I have wasted a lot of precious time today.

LOL

How could we forget these guys? Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown Pitcher 1904-1912 Dave Beard Pitcher 1985 Rod Beck Pitcher 1998-1999 Footsie Blair Second Base 1929-1931 Guy Bush Pitcher 1923-1934 Doc Curley Second Base 1899

thanks for the link trans. if we give z the nickname of "two-run", he could join the all food team: two-RUN ZAmbrano. tick, tock, tick, tock...only 30 more minutes until the starting gun goes off. praise the lord and pass the ammunition !!

Back to baseball, Angels and Gary Matthews agree to 5 year, $50 million deal.

I could have also included Antonio "Six Fingers, Six Toes" Alfonseca.

Well, hopefully Donnie Veal will make it up to the majors soon so we can get some pitching depth. And if we got really desperate for another pitcher we could let Milt Pap(p)as onto the team. Then, if we had Chip Caray announcing the game we'd have a bilingual compliment to French and Frey. Ok, Iím reaching a bit there.

How 'bout Roe Skidmore? Not sure what position he played. Looks like he only played in one game and only pinch hit in that one. He retired with the major league record for highest batting average and OBP though.

Moose Skowron for the All Animal Team! How about adding Bull Durham to that one?

For the food team, my all time favorite Cub: George "The Baron" Mitterwald. You see, there's a sandwich called The Baron...... Never mind. Joey

Roe Skidmore was an Illinois native from Decatur and attended Milliken U in Decatur.

The result may be Grimm, but I'll take a Chance with Johnny Kling peaches.

Adam Dunn?

Never a Cub, but Jimmy Gobble merits a mention today.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
