Behind the Scenes at MVN

Congratulations to Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn on their elections to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Goose Gossage reached the 70% plateau and was just 21 votes shy of induction, so it appears it's just a matter of time before he gets in. Andre Dawson was at 56.7% and Lee Smith was at 39.8%. You can view the final vote tally here. Anyway they're moving some stuff around in hopes of getting rid of the glitchiness over the last few weeks. Bear with us.

To me, the most amazing vote of all is that some people actually thought Bobby Bonilla should get HOF votes. Bobby Bonilla!!!! Try to put a sabremetric spin on that.

speaking of bobby bonilla, dude's been feasting on the all-you-can eat buffets or something if you saw him on the MLB.com feed they were broadcasting..,

"Bobby Bonilla!!" All time National League Switch hitting home run leader. Just saying.

I distinctly remember the time when teams were more fearful of pitching to Bonilla than to Bonds Then again, I also remember a time when the Pirates were good.

Crap, looks like Jay Buhner needs to wait another year, getting just one vote. What a crock.

The Trib has listed 11 players that were invited to Spring Camp today: Pitchers Sean Gallagher, Adam Harben, Ryan O'Malley, Carmen Pignatiello (Providence HS) and Randy Wells Catcher Jake Fox Infielders Mike Kinkade, Casey McGehee and Eric Patterson Outfielders Tyler Colvin and Chris Walker

433: "Crap, looks like Jay Buhner needs to wait another year, getting just one vote. What a crock." Actually he will be off the ballot as he didn't get 5% of the vote. But the one person who did vote for him should be shot.

Jeff Smaesjsdfjkasdfjhksahjdfkjsa will also get an invite as that was talked about last year.

From the two times I have seen Tyler Colvin swing a bat, I have concluded that he is the next Derrick May.

So do I. Derrek Lee had a decent run as a left-handed OF for a few years, but failed to improve beyond the age of 25. Worse things in the world than being a useful fourth OF for a few years... And of course, I'm about 5% serious in making the comparison. If I had another two at bats to watch Colvin, THEN I'd be serious. ~grin~

Derrek Lee had a decent run as a left-handed OF for a few years, but failed to improve beyond the age of 25. Until he switched to the right side and picked up a first basemen's glove. :)

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
