Gameday Open Thread / Cubs @ Mariners

Vegas Baby, Vegas! Cubs versus Mariners in the desert at Cashman Park. Ted Lilly versus Miguel Batista. Which of these Cubs is most likely to have spent the whole night gambling, drinking and hitting the strip joints? A) Carlos Zambrano B) Cliff Floyd C) Ryan Theriot D) Henry Blanco E) Scott Eyre

Comments

WGN broadcast tonight woohoo. regular season starts in 3 days, I think its going to be a fantastic season. Go Cubs Go

Anybody have a preference who the Reds pick to start the third game against the Cubs? Eric Milton and Kyle Lohse are both supposed to pitch tomorrow and then one of them will pitch next against the Cubs.

too bad this was not the tie-breaker question for the 2007 prediction contest.

TB #1: How much did Z spend on strippers in Vegas? TB#2: How much did Z lose/win at the tables in Vegas?

something tells me, rob, that z is watching his coins very carefully until he and hendry shake hands on that 6 year 102 million dollar deal. :)

TB #2 - Zambrano won't exactly win any $ at the tables, but he will shake down the dealer and/or pit boss for $2,000,000.

21! twenty effing one?!! i don't need no stinking 21. gimme my damned money....

How is Ryan Dempster not on that multiple choice? This is the same guy who ran around Stanley's in Lincoln Park NAKED on a dare. And you don't think he's getting a little crazy in Vegas? Come on now.

I'll go with C-Ryan Theroit But it started innocently enough, he wanted some tips on improving his defense at SS and he wanded into Cesar's Palace.....

wandered... nothing like screwing a really bad joke my mis-typing. That's what I get for posting at 6:40 on a saturday morning.

Brick: "Did they just say the Cubs have thirty-six errors in ST??" Yep, Cubs have the 5th most errors in ST. Not good...

loved the description of Neifi by Christina Kahrl in Baseball Prospectus: St. Neifi of the Wounded Wood

Offense looked pretty good last night. Maybe ready to go. Pitching, eh, it was alright.

Trib (Sullivan) reporting this morning that Z's deal is "nearly sealed." Evidently there were good conversations yesterday.

Bobby Kielty missed Thursday and Friday's games because of food poisoning that he attributed to a bad cheeseburger. Cheeseburger in Paradise? Burp!

Levine said that Z and his agent met with Hendry both before and after the game yesterday in Vegas. While he didn't say a deal was "nearly sealed" he figures IF the deal does get done it will be tonight or tomorrow morning as the Cubs won't want Z having to hold a presser before the early start in Cincy on Mon. Looks for 5yr/$80-85 with a 6th year option with $3-5m buyout.

Cubs were also lowest in ERA in Cactus League and the best base stealing team at 30 out of 34. Looks like the Cubs will finish 7 in MLB this spring in walks and 3rd in BA. For a team that loves to strike out over the years they will finish as the 4 hardest team to strikeout. We also finished 2nd in HR's, and 3rd in RBI. What does it all mean? Not a whole lot, its spring training.

I'm just glad Z isn't represented by Drew Rosenhaus. That guy makes Boras look easy to deal with.

Buster Olney says 5/85 for Z. He speculates the Cubs "could announce a Zambrano extension on Opening Day (Monday) to create some positive vibes to start the season." That's from his Insider blog.

If we get Z in the fold that means we have, under contract for at least 4 seasons: DLee Z Aram Soriano I think this is an excellent core. If Prior can recapture what once was, this can be a dominant team.

"I think this is an excellent core. If Prior can recapture what once was, this can be a dominant team." I love how that exact quote could have been written on March 31, 2004, March 31, 2005, March 31, 2006, or today. Will it also be written next year?

If Prior can.... Will it also be written next year? $300 million later, our fortunes still depend on that man making good again.

DOUGIE: "“I think this is an excellent core. If Prior can recapture what once was, this can be a dominant team.” 'I love how that exact quote could have been written on March 31, 2004, March 31, 2005, March 31, 2006, or today. Will it also be written next year?' Man, you are so RIGHT! I am MORE excited about looking forward with the manifestation of the young arm's talent: Sam-ard-ja, Veal, Guzman, Pawalek. Whle I truly believe Prior is not "finished", its my opinion that the above - the club's minor league's strength, will be fun to watch coming up.

I'm already on record saying the only downside to ST is Lou leaving the Cherry Pie behind. Ward and Cotts?? Come on ....

This past winter I ask my brother-in-law, a die-hard Giants fan, if he was upset about losing Jason Schmidt. "Nope, I think he's done," was the answer I got. "He's losing his fastball." Turns out that's exactly right, according to the LA Times. "The Dodgers spent $47 million to lure Jason Schmidt to be their ace, a certified power arm. If you believe the Dodger Stadium radar gun -- and the reports from several National League teams that scouted Schmidt in Florida this spring -- they bought a pitcher with a below-average fastball. Schmidt continues to register radar readings under 90 mph. -- Los Angeles Times

"I’m already on record saying the only downside to ST is Lou leaving the Cherry Pie behind." I thought you were going the Ben & Jerry route on Cherry? Let's hope that Cotts' poor performances will not cost them too many games in the standings before he's sent down.

Here's a random one for ya: Who will finish with more career wins for the Cubs: Prior, Wood or Samardajjiaa? It's sad that it's even a legit trivia question.

IS the Giants-Dodgers rivalry as heated as Cubs-Cards? Having lived in LA for a year of college, I just don't recall the City getting too excited about many things, except the Lakers.

Schmidt losing his fastball is hardly news, they've been whispering that since last year and I know I've mentioned it a few times. The main reason I wasn't too upset that we lost out on him.

"I love how that exact quote could have been written on March 31, 2004, March 31, 2005, March 31, 2006, or today. Will it also be written next year?" Really? Really? I 100% disagree. Who replaces Soriano, in my list? Before 2004, Z is not on that list. You would really pin your hopes on a 38 year old Moises Alou? You would be looking forward to all the things that Sammy was going to do? We have Soriano at the peak of his career, ARam still on the up swing and DLee, still in his prime. Not even close to the same thing.

"IS the Giants-Dodgers rivalry as heated as Cubs-Cards?" Yes and no. You see, Los Angeles is the most OVERRATED sports town in America. People here don't really care that much. Having said that, the Giants/Dodgers games are pretty hostile. A guy got shot in the parking lot one year.

Schmidt losing his fastball is hardly news, Apparently the Dodgers were out of the loop, Rob.

apparently they were and in that park, it's not like I don't think he'll be effective, but I doubt he'll be the ace they think they're getting... LA sports scene is pathetic, the Lakers and maybe USC football are the only things really followed with any sort of passion. It's just not part of the culture here like it is in Chicago or New York or Boston. When they're doing well, they get good crowds and all and even when they're doing poorly, but no one really cares if the teams are losing. Of course you wouldn't care either if you could go to the beach 200 days of the year.

"You see, Los Angeles is the most OVERRATED sports town in America." do you think so? I don't perceive it as such. People on the East Coast certainly don't. Other than Kobe, what other sports "story" is there? There is no NFL football. Oh..wait...I forgot David Beckham is there. That is football, too. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? As you know - they're in Orange freakin' County! I hope they lose the rights in Federal Court. That's like a team in Rockford Illinois calling themselves the Chicago Cubs. So - I don't know that LA is overrated. I just think that it is very insolar to the West coast. So maybe to Seattlites, its overrated...

"Of course you wouldn’t care either if you could go to the beach 200 days of the year." LOL! Well put! That is, if you can find a parking spot NEAR the beach! UGH!

"So - I don’t know that LA is overrated. I just think that it is very insolar to the West coast. So maybe to Seattlites, its overrated…" My point is that people is that people THINK this is a sports town, and it's not. That is pathetic considering that Los Angeles has two of the most stories franchises in their respective league. And by that, I mean, the Clippers and The Avengers. Kidding. This is a terrible sports town that doesn't deserve a football team.

"Having said that, the Giants/Dodgers games are pretty hostile. A guy got shot in the parking lot one year. " If that is the criteria, I would say the White Sox have the best rivalry with......well every team that comes to play them :)

How about this, I will say that the White Sox have a pretty heated rivalry with umps and opposing first base coaches. FWIW.

"And by that, I mean, the Clippers and The Avengers. Kidding. This is a terrible sports town that doesn’t deserve a football team." LMAO!!

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
