Cubs @ Brewers: Game 161

Ian Happ brought the Cubs back with a solo shot before Chicago fell to the Brewers in an extra innings defeat. They had a strong chance to put up multiple runs in the tenth but couldn't collect a single hit to drive home Swanson and Morel from second and third. The Cubs go into their final two games 1.5 behind the Marlins and tied with the Reds. With disadvantage in both potential tiebreakers, the Cubs must win both remaining games and need two losses from the Marlins and one from the Reds--any other outcomes render the final game moot.

Jordan Wicks takes the mound to start the most significant game of his young MLB career. He's exceeded expectations to this point, riding strong command, a nasty changeup, and a better than advertised curve to a 3.00 ERA and a four and one record in six starts. Wicks gets his chance against fellow lefty Eric Lauer. Lauer has gone four and five with a 5.48 ERA in 2023. This will be his first MLB appearance since May 20. He collected a win against the Cubs back in his first start of the season. He spent the bulk of this season recovering from a shoulder impingement issue that could explain his decline compared to the last few seasons.

6-0 cubs lead to 6-5 in the 2nd with 0 outs.  very recent cubs...even some bad D thrown in to remind us what they've been like recently.

it's been this way all season, but it's a bit of a bummer how people don't fall for wesn's sweeper/slider thing like they were when he initially came up.  it's a hot pitch with youth all over MLB the past couple years...that's not helping things.

He's really fooling some righties with the inside fastball. Maybe it's more a matter of batters sitting slider.

I like his delivery less the more I see it. He does not look under control at all. But maybe I just think that because he often looks like he doesn't know where his pitches are going to end up.

it's officially over with game 161 in progress and MIA winning their game.  going for it was worth it and it was fun to watch.

CUBS 2023 PERFORMANCE BONUSES ATTAINED:
Drew Smyly: $2M for throwing at least 140 IP (also $2M salary escalator for 2024)
Yan Gomes: $250K for starting at least 81 games at catcher
Cody Bellinger: $1M for winning N. L. Comeback Player of the Year (still TBD but is a virtual slam-dunk)

Also note that if the Cubs exercise 2024 club option on Kyle Hendrcks that he will get automatic 10/5 "no trade" rights starting on June 26.

I'd say the whole Cubs Hitting Org from top to bottom is in a "meh/slump" stage here.
We're all just waiting for a breakout to occur here in Wrigley and down on the farm. BDavis has been a good story, but he needs some company!!

Thank goodness for Bellinger. He's the only hitter we have that honestly doesn't have a whole in his approach. He's a professional hitter and can provide pop. I don't buy into the argument he doesn't have real bat speed. He can turn on almost any inside pitch (up or down).
But I still think he should be the 1B. He clearly doesn't want that.
PCA in CF (or Tauch) and Happ, Busch and ONKC at DH (or Happ/ONKC in LF).

matt shaw's AA hot start has been fizzling hard.

he hit 3 homers by april 14, none since.  he's pretty much had a dead bat since april 17th.

he's got a .182/.304/.242 slash in may so far.

they might just be getting rid of the masterboney dead weight.

Luis Vasquez gets his first call up, looks like Nico may move to the IL but no formal counter move yet.

iowa gave away the game in the late innings.  davis got a single and double to add to the pile, though.

    may  9th - .135/.306/.216

    may 18th - .279/.439/.689

in 8 games over 9 days he's gone from washup to prospect resurgence.  it would be nice to get that heat from 2021 back.

unreal.  be crazy to see where this goes in a month or 2....unless it gets too crazy to ignore at the mlb level.

And another solo shot in the third. He’s not hitting cheapies either. Definitely capturing my attention at this point.

He is on a serious heater right now
