Cubs @ Padres: Series Thread (Games 28-30)

A three-game sweep at Wrigley added yet more distance between the Cubs and the fun of mid April. The boys in blue travel to sunny San Diego next to attempt to play enjoyable baseball. See below for the matchups (such as they stand with the Cubs still shuffling the deck).

Game 28, Monday, May 9, 8:40 pm central

CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (1-3, 5.64 ERA)

SD: LHP MacKenzie Gore (2-0, 1.71 ERA)

Game 29, Tuesday, May 10, 8:40 pm central

CHC: TBD

SD: RHP Mike Clevinger (0-0, 5.79 ERA)

Game 30, Wednesday, May 11, 3:10 pm central

CHC: TBD

SD: RHP Nick Martinez (2-2, 3.38 ERA)

Yes, but that gives him a chance to be ROY. I think he's related to PCA, by the way.

Also, I'd say it's less shuffling the deck as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic...Sigh...

i can't believe we're not even 30 games into the season and there's 2 open slots in the rotation without good options because stroman/miley are out.  they're not going to use thompson and they still need to find another arm from somewhere even if they did want to use thompson.

this is something that's supposed to happen to poorly planned organizations in july/august after trades, not 27 games into the season.

More roster moves as Robertson now out w COVID. Conner Menez, lefty, previously w Giants and Schwindel-Sampson flip flop. The later seems to me that they are throwing spitballs at the wall. We could use some spitballs thrown near the strike zone.

Conner Menez is the grandson of one-time Cubs back-up catcher Bill Plummer, who had the distinction of being back-up catcher to Randy Hundley and then (later) Johnny Bench.

Also, Menez (like Justin Steele) is eligible for a fourth minor league option in 2022, but it has to be used in 2022. It won't be there for them in 2023.

Frank Schwindel had been on Optional Assignment for only two days, so in order to be recalled he - MUST - replace a player who is placed on the IL or other MLB inactive list. While Conner Menez can replace Robertson on the 40, it is not a direct replacement for Robertson on the active list roster, because that has to be Schwindel. Menez actually replaces Sampson, who had replaced Stroman on the 40. Sampson can be outrighted back to AAA without waivers being required, but only when Stroman is reinstated.

steele's exit was "left thumb soreness"...not a blister...and his next start is up in the air.  his thumb is a key part of gripping his slider.

wade miley starts tonight (tuesday).  hit the bench TBD.

Vargas up, Sampson DFA, per the pregame radio broadcast.  Hermosillo to IL for the Miley call up.

4ip 5h 2bb 1k, 2r/er

if not for heyward totally missing a ball he should have gotten to it would be one less hit and only 1r/er, but it still wasn't a great performance.

his past 3 outings he's been a less steady with his command...though we probably shouldn't consider anyone's outing from that crazy wind+rain+cold miserable game representative of skill.

...and nico is out of the game after running into the f'n umpire

"right ankle soreness"

cubs got some weak ass ankles.  suzuki, newcomb, hoerner...wtf?

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
