Cubs @ Twins: Series Thread (Games 38-40)

The Cubs took the final game of their homestand to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Cardinals. They enter the road trip 18-19 and holding at third in the NL Central. The Pirates are one for their last ten and the Brewers are two for their last ten, but they maintain first and second respectively as every NL Central team has a losing record over the same span. The Twins, on the other hand, sit atop a weak AL Central. Offseason additions Carlos Correa and Christian Vazquez have done little to contribute to the team's success thus far, while Byron Buxton and Joey Gallo are each doing their thing. See below for matchups.

Game 38, Friday, May 12, 7:10 pm central

MIN: RHP Sonny Gray (4-0, 1.35 ERA)

CHC: LHP Drew Smyly (3-1, 3.05 ERA)

The veteran Gray is the standout in the Minnesota's rotation so far. He's doing his usual--striking out more than a batter per inning and getting more than a fair share of ground balls. His last start he gave up a season high three earned runs on three walks and four hits over five innings.

Smyly went only 3.1 innings in his last outing, walking three and allowing three hits including a homerun over that time. He did strike five.

Game 39, Saturday, May 13, 1:10 pm central

MIN: RHP Joe Ryan (5-1, 2.45 ERA)

CHC: RHP Hayden Wesneski (2-1, 3.93 ERA)

The 26-year-old Ryan  debuted in 2022 and made 27 starts. He put up a very solid season and relied on strikeouts and good control while allowing a lot of contact in the air. He's showing improved control this season and is inducing more contact on the ground. He did allow a season high eight hits in his last start, but he walked none and held the opposition to only two earned runs in six innings.

Wesneski has shown significant improvement of late, allowing one earned run in each of his last three starts. Last time, he also struck out six, showing he can still miss bats.

Game 40, Sunday, May 14, 1:10 pm central

MIN: RHP Louie Varland (0-0, 4.32 ERA)

CHC: RHP Marcus Stroman (2-3, 2.28 ERA)

Varland is only 25 and made five MLB starts in 2022. He's made three starts in 2023 and has been hurt by homeruns. Last time out he allowed no homers and held the opposition to one earned run.

Stroman has been great solid since Opening Day, excepting a rough outing on April 23. Last time he took a loss despite allowing only two earned runs in six innings.

With the Oakland Athletics AAA affiliate in Las Vegas outdrawing the MLB club in Oakland on a nightly basis, it is very likely that the A's won't wait for a new stadium before  moving to Las Vegas.

Presuming the new proposed stadium site on the Strip (former site of The Tropicana) is approved, the A's could move to Las Vegas as early as the 2025 season (their Coliseum lease expires after the 2024 season) and temporarily play in the minor league ballpark until the new MLB stadium is ready  (probably 2027)

If the A's do move to Las Vegas, it is possible that Tucson will replace Las Vegas as a AAA city. Tucson was a long-time member of the Pacific Coast League and there was a AAA team there as recently as 2013, before the Padres moved their AAA affiliate from Tucson to El Paso. There is a fairly new ballpark available in Tucson (Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium), which was former home to the Padres AAA team and White Sox & Diamondbacks MLB Spring Training games.

Tucson also has multiple ballparks ready for play.  Kino Vet's park is baseball-ready with some modernization.  the Hi Corbett ballpark might be a bit too non-modern, but the footprint and parking is adequate.  espeically given Kino is near the airport i imagine that would be the desired play unless they really want to sink some $$ into a revamp.

i loved spring training in tucson.  you got the games without the excessive amount of out-of-towners (of which i was one) filling every restaurant and hotel.  it also made getting tickets in good seats much easier.

my last game at Hi Corbett was a hell of a zambrano outing vs COL...short outing, but nice to see him that close-up in such a cozy ballpark.  cubs won.

found a pic of Z that i took at the game from my $7 seat... https://i.ibb.co/5KHGVpC/Z1.jpg

he's still most likely a 150+K guy over a full season of PAs, but yeah, the rest of the package is nice.

also, with all the pressure to play CF/OF, i think it's easy for some to forget the guy can play 2nd and SS well + 3rd good enough to not embarrass himself.  i hope the CF play gets better simply to give him more options to play.

it took 7 games before STL decided to end the "contreras not catching" thing...he returns behind the plate monday.

7 games, 5.4 runs a game with the new catching setup...5 of 7 games with 5 or more runs given up.

hendricks starts in iowa tomorrow...wesn's last 3 outings have been nice, but today...phew...

hosmer ejected for arguing balls and strikes.  in a reflection of his season so far, it actually was a strike...so yeah.  0-3 with a walk...ross decided to get tossed over this, too.

disappointing run lately.  mervis is still trying to get it going with the bat (nice glove, though).  bellinger is in a slump.  suzuki's power outage is concerning even if not an injury concern causing it.  kinda over madrigal getting a lot of ABs...

wtf happ.  i mean, how the hell did he take such a huge step back with his OF defense?  dude put in the best LF performance i've ever seen from a cub last year...no doubt.  this year his routes are iffy and he has problems corralling the ball off the walls, fumbling multiple times.

morel does homers.  this time a 3rd decker.  his 2nd deck homer a couple nights ago was the longest hit by a cub this year...beat it by 32 feet, 461 feet...exit velocity 113mph.

hendricks throws 79 pitches today in AAA.  5ip 6h 2bb 4k, 2r/er...that might be it for him in AAA.  wesn's rotation spot might be in trouble or the cubs might try a little bit of 6-man rotation.

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)
