Cubs vs. Rays: Series Thread (Games 10-12)
The Cubs split the series in Colorado to maintain a winning record going into a seven-game homestand. They'll take on a 5-5 Tampa Bay club to begin the week. This will be the first time these clubs have faced off since 2017. See below for daily matchups.
Game 10, Monday, April 18, 6:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-1, 7.00 ERA)
TB: LHP Shane McClanahan (0-1, 3.00 ERA)
Hendricks has not found his trademark command this far in the young season. He's struck out 11 in 9.0 innings across those two starts, but he's also walked 7 and allowed 12 hits. He could not get through the fourth inning in Pittsburgh last time round. The forecast calls for cool temps and a breeze coming in off the lake, which should help to keep the ball in the park.
Until last year, the young lefty McClanahan projected as a late-inning reliever. He showed up in 2021 with solid command, however, and made 25 starts. Out of his four-pitch mix, his fastball and curve stand out the most. He's struck out nearly 2 batters per inning in the early going but faces a Cubs roster replete with right-handed hitters.
Game 11, Tuesday, April 19, 6:40 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (1-0, 1.93 ERA)
TB: [Update: RHP Matt Wisler serving as Opener (0-0, 1.93 ERA), LHP: Josh Fleming as Bulk Reliever (1-1, 4.05 ERA)
Steele is making some hay with Miley and Alzolay out of the picture to start 2022. Although he is likely ticketed for the bullpen eventually, he's been able to succeed with essentially a two-pitch mix so far. He's not exactly living off of batted ball luck, either, as opponents have enjoyed a BABIP of .346 off of him so far.
Tampa Bay looks to employ Wisler as an Opener and then switch to the lefty Fleming for multi-inning relief.
Game 12, Wednesday, April 20, 6:40 pm central
CHC: RHP Marcus Stroman (0-1, 6.00 ERA)
TB: RHP Drew Rasmussen (0-1, 5.00 ERA)
Stroman has looked better than his numbers indicate thus far. His slider has been sharp enough to get a few whiffs and he's looked athletic on the mound. Wrigely should be a welcome sight following a tough outing in Colorado.
Cubs' fans may remember Rasmussen from his time in the Brewers' pen back in 2020. Since then he's made 25 appearances in relief and 12 starts for the Rays. He's reined in the walks ab it and has a high-90s fastball to fall back on as well as a plus slider.
