Dunderwood Just Plain Dealin' at Riverview Park

Iowa Cubs RHSP Duane Underwood Jr hurled 6.2 IP of two-hit shutout baseball, Henderson Perez belted a two-run HR, and Christopher Morel smacked a solo HR, in Cubs Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action Wednesday morning on Field #6 on John Arguello Way at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

The Morel HR was hit halfway to Scottsdale.

The game was pre-planned as an eleven-inning affair so that all of the pitchers who were scheduled to throw today could get their work.

So it looks like Underwood is ready for his first start with the I-Cubs (probably next Tuesday).

LHRP Kyle Ryan (who was an NRI to MLB Spring Training) followed Underwood to the mound and retired seven of the eight men he faced. (K. Ryan was assigned to Extended Spring Training to get work and stay ready in case he is needed at Iowa).

LHP Manuel Rondon and RHP Erick Leal also threw in the game (this was the second game appearance for both of them after spending most of Minor League Camp in the Rehab Throwing Program).

Hi, Phil.  Tyson Miller had a strong game today (7K/1BB/5IP).  Assuming you had the opportunity to see him this spring, do you have any input on his velocity and his stuff?

He was viewed as kinda raw but having a decent arm when drafted two years ago as a 4th rounder, and while his numbers last year didn't stand out, his second half showed improvement (55K/15BB/64IP).  So it would be kinda cool if during and following his first full season, if he's made some adjustments or gotten stronger and faster, and perhaps has some actual-prospect stuff at this point?

Thanks in advance!

CRAIG: I saw Tyson Miller pitch twice at Minor League Camp, once against San Jose (Giants Hi-A) and then in an intrasquad game the next week. He retired the first ten men he faced versus San Jose (five on strikeouts) before hitting a bit of a wall in the 4th inning and then pitching through it to finish strong, and he was equally effective in the intrasquad game. His stuff is somewhat above-average but not exceptional. His FB was sitting at 92-93 when I saw him and he seemed to have had a good feel for his breaking ball both times (I don't know if it's a slider or a CV), and he also threw an occasional CH. He did a nice job of mixing his pitches. The best things about T. Miller are command, athleticism, confidence, and reliability. He works fast and throws strikes, and he's a big dude. too (somewhat like Oscar de la Cruz), so he gives the impression that he could be a "horse" in the rotation (presuming he stays healthy, which of course is true for all young pitchers). T. Miller was definitely raw the first few times I saw him pitch in 2016 (AZL and Instructs) and 2017 (Minor League Camp) and I have to admit I wasn't particularly impressed at that time given where the Cubs selected him in the draft, but he has developed nicely over the past year and is a lot more polished now. If he can develop his CH into an effective third pitch without it affecting his command, he would become a Top 15 prospect.

Tennessee RHSP Adbert Alzolay pitched in Extended Spring Training intrasquad game this morning (Monday 4/9) on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K, 2/1 GO/AO, 59 pitches (37 strikes)

HAGSAG: I would say when he leaves EXST, Alzolay will probably "piggy-back" with one of the starters at AA (whichever one is having the most difficulty getting past the 4th inning).

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.
