Giants Put the Slug on the Cubs at Sloan

Hunter Bishop drilled an RBI triple and an RBI single, walked, stole a base, and scored two runs, Will Wilson doubled twice, singled, walked, scored two runs, and drove-in another, Luis Matos doubled twice and knocked-in a run, Brett Auerbach cracked a two-run triple, Logan Wyatt blasted a solo HR, and Alexander Canario made a game-ending diving catch in RF, as the Giants thrashed the Cubs 11-4 in AZIL game action Friday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

Canario suffered what appeared to be a significant left shoulder injury making the diving catch and had to be carted off the field.

Eight of the Giants' twelve hits were for extra-bases (including five doubles, two triples, and one HR).

Yonathan Perlaza hammered a solo HR and a triple and racked-up an outfield assist, Chase Strumpf collected two RBI singles, Jordan Nwogu singled twice, walked, stole a base, and scored a run, and Nelson Velazquez laced an RBI single for the Cubs in a losing cause.

The 21-year old switch-hitting Perlaza is being converted from an infielder (3B-2B) to an outfielder at Instructs, in large part to let him concentrate on his hitting. (His infield defense was pretty bad, and he would sometimes seem to take an error with him to the plate). But there is no doubting his offensive tools (hard contact with a slightly upper-cut swing path from both sides of the plate and above-average speed on the bases). He has played all three OF positions so far at Instructs, but looks most comfortable in LF (he played ten games in LF for South Bend in 2019). He will likely be added to the 38-man AAA Iowa reserve list on 11/20 so that he can be selected in the Major League Phase only ($100,000 draft price with the potential to re-claim in the Major League Phase, versus $24,000 draft price with no right to reclaim if he were to be placed on the AA Tennessee reserve list and be selected in the AAA Phase).

Cubs RHP Danis Correa pitched the 9th inning for the Cubs, throwing mostly all fastballs and consistently hitting 97-98. Like Perlaza, the 21-year old Correa is eligible for selection in the Rule 5 Draft, and while his secondaries need a lot of work and his command comes and goes, some club might want to take a gamble on him, if for no other reason than the high-velo FB. Because of his size (he is only 5'11 155), he likely profiiles as a one-inning high-octane bullpen arm. Like Perlaza, Correa is a virtual lock to be placed on the AAA Iowa reserve list on 11/20 so that he will be eligible for selection in the Rule 5 Draft's Major League Phase only.

Jim Callis with a fine piece on Cubs Instructs at MLB pipeline a few days ago.

https://www.mlb.com/news/cubs-instructional-league-report?t=mlb-pipelin…

I can confirm that Bryan Hudson is indeed hitting 94-95 with his FB with some cutting action that bores-in on RH hitters.

He easily retired seven of the first eight men he faced Friday (F-7, K, BB, 5-3 - 5-3, K, K - F-7) on only 30 pitches, before suddenly losing it and getting creamed (2B, BB, 2B, 3B, WP) as his FB velo suddenly dipped two or three ticks and he could no longer command his secondaries (CV and CH). This was also the case in his previous two outings (dominant first inning then struggled through two more innings in his first outing, and then same thing again in his second outing -- a game he started).

I remember back in the day when the 6'8 lefty was a young struggling extreme ground ball SP with a 90 MPH sinker who couldn't throw strikes consistently and who labored to get through a multi-innng outing, but now I would project him as a legit one-inning (or 25-30 pitches over parts of two innings) LHRP with possible MLB upside.

Hudson is eligible for selection in this year's Rule 5 Draft (he was eligible last year, too), and while I doubt that he will be added to the Cubs MLB 40-man roster on 11/20 (although I suppose it's possible), he is a lock to be assigned to the AAA Iowa reserve list (making him eligible for selection in the Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft only  -- $100,000 draft price if selected and the possibility of being re-claimed later).

Keep in mind that despite pitching in the Cubs system for five seasons (six if you include 2020 at Instructs), Hudson has not yet pitched above Hi-A (and he spent two seasons at that level 2018-19), so he really needs some game reps at least in AA if not also in AAA before the Cubs begin to think about adding him to the 40. That said, it's OK to be patient with prospects, especially 6'8 LHPs.

wow.  what a blown call.  go cubs, i guess.

neris is good for 70-ish appearances and having him throw 89-91mph fastballs was something i was not looking forward to for 70-ish games.

his splitter today was ranging 82-83mph...also a bit faster than spring performances.

    Holy shit this umpire sucks

However, all is forgiven when his suckiness works in favor of the Cubs.

Neris must have been sand-baging spring training. He's a veteran, so he knew what he was doing. Had me fooled to be honest. Glad I was wrong.

  • hellfrozeover (view)

Looks like he might the cliche veteran pitcher in spring not really ramping it up and just “forking on stuff” in spring. If he gets to 94 on the regular he’ll do just fine.

  • crunch (view)

topped out a 94mph, threw 4 of those.  feeling a lot better about neris.

  • crunch (view)

neris has thrown 2 pitches at 93mph out of his first 5 pitches.  that's a positive turn.

I really am not interested in the wesneski head case experience again any time soon. Give me smyly over wesneski. Hell give me keegan Thompson over wesneski every day of the week. His stuff isn’t as good but at least he doesn’t melt down mentally every time something goes mildly awry.

they might not want to start the clock on brown and give us wesn.  hopefully it won't come to that.
