Hendricks Throws Three Innings at Fitch Park

Henry Bolte (A's #11 prospect) smacked an RBI triple, singled, stole a base, and scored a run, Pedro Pineda singled, walked, stole two bases, scored two runs, and drove-in another, Denzel Clarke (A's #10 prospect) singled twice, stole a base, and scored a run, and Bjay Cooke singled twice and drove-in a run, helping the Athletics edge the Cubs 5-4 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Wally Soto belted a two-run HR and Anderson Suriel drilled an RBI triple for the Cubs in a losing cause.

Kyle Hendricks (on Cubs MLB  15-day IL - right shoulder strain) made his second start for the EXST Cubs and worked three innings (45 pitches - 31 strikes), allowing one run on four "hard contact" hits (the Bolte triple, the two Clarke singles, and one of the Cooke singles).

While the Cubs were playing the A's at Fitch Park, Mason McGwire and Codi Heuer (March 2022 TJS) threw "live" BP at Sloan Park. (Heuer threw his first "live" BP this past Wednesday, so he should be ready to pitch in an EXST game sometime next week).

In EXST Cubs roster news, RHP Oliver Roque has been released. While Roque has a plus CV, his FB velo was second lowest among all ACL Cubs pitchers last season. (Only recently-released RHP Cristian Rojas had a lower average FB velo among ACL Cubs pitchers last season).

In addition to releasing Roque from Extended Spring Training, the Cubs also released three players from their Dominican Academy, including RHP Kenneddy Delgado, RHP Yohan Crispin, and C-INF Carlos Ramos. Crispin attended EXST in Mesa last season but then was sent back to the Dominican Academy and pitched in the DSL in 2022, and Ramos attended AZ Instructs post-2022 and Minor League Camp this season but was sent back to the Dominican Academy a couple of weeks ago.

Speaking of "in the know", Gonzales quotes AZ Phil in today's Sun Times saying: "In another development, right-hander Kyle Hendricks threw 45 pitches in a 3-inning stint in extended spring training in Arizona. Hendricks, according to thecubreporter.com, allowed one run and four hits and struck out 2..."

One of the other Cubs beat writers described yesterday's Cactus League Extended Spring Training game (Cubs at A's) as a "sim" game, which it is not.

Other than not being official and with a couple of rules variances, there is absolutely no difference whatsoever between an Extended Spring Training game and an "official" ACL game. No difference. Players are playing to win, coaches argue with umpires, sometimes things can get testy. It is a REAL game, and it is insulting to the players and umpires to call it a "sim" game.

A 'sim" (simulated) game is a very specific type of game that was invented about 50 years ago at Extended Spring Training, sort of a cross between "live" BP and a full-blown intrasquad game, where the players play defense for an inning or two, and then rotate in to hit, and batters run the bases, and sometimes runners are placed on one or more bases to simulate game situations without actually playing a game (ergo that's why it's called a "sim" game).

now that cooper is gone, who's going to the IL?  seems like it will probably be a pitcher at this point.

can't wait to see what A-ball fringe corner OF/1st he'll be traded for...

    Cooper DFA'd

Players on the 40 can be recalled and be placed on the MLB Taxi Squad for one day, like for example if a club is unsure if a player might or might not be placed on the IL ("game time decision"). Like maybe Happ, for example.

Also, a player on the MLB Taxi Squad must be returned to his optional assignment the next day if he is not officially recalled to the 26-man roster.

The player is NOT paid at the MLB split rate and does NOT accrue MLB Service Time while he is on the Taxi Squad. Also, it is not considered to be an official recall / option back if he is not added to the 26-man roster.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Wesneski has not spent 15 days on optional assignment since he was optioned so he cannot be recalled unless he is replacing a player being placed on the IL or other MLB inactive list (Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical, et al), a player who is traded, or a player who is claimed off waivers.

excited to see more power in the lineup.

HOU going with 3 righty starters vs the cubs and their only lefty pen arm is hader.

unless busch has a mystery injury, we should see busch+mervis working all 3 games.

More than 50 years ago (I'm old), I was in the audience when my HS choir performed the whole thing. (It was a really elite choir and director.) That was my first exposure to the piece. You're right, Sonicwind75, there is a lot more to it than "O Fortuna," just like there's a lot more to Beethoven's Ninth than the Ode to Joy, etc. Much if it, as you say, is bawdy: "O! O! Totus florio! Iam amori virginali, totus ardeo!" Basically, "I'm really horny for these virgins!" And the guys in the choir adopted the "Skoal"- type greeting from the tavern scene: "Wafna!"

i would have pause if the cubs had a pitching squeeze.   as it is, they have more guys than they have roster.

    Maybe Brewer

He'd be able to leave the Cubs. He's out of options. That would open up a 40man spot.

I don't think Jed would do that.

brewer has done nothing to keep him on the big league roster...imagine that's 1 guy gone.

yeah, it's only 2 appearances, but they were both unimpressive.
