Hudson Continues to Thrive in the Arizona Sun

LHSP Bryan Hudson hurled five innings of one-hit shutout ball with six strikeouts, Jacob Hannemann drove-in three runs with a squeeze-bunt and a two-run line-drive single, and Chris Dominguez doubled twice and scored two runs, helping the Cubs whitewash the Diamondbacks 6-0 on Quail Field, and Rafael Mejia belted a three-run HR, Aramis Ademan singled, tripled, and scored a run, and six pitchers combined to toss a five-hitter, as the Cubs edged the Diamondbacks 3-2 on Whirlwind Field, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader action Tuesday morning at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Both games were pre-planned as seven-inning affairs.

Bryan Hudson has thrown eleven innings over the course of his first two Cactus League Extended Spring Training starts, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk, with twelve strikeouts and a 15/3 GO/AO.

Eloy Jimenez (on Myrtle Beach 7-day DL - right shoulder) was a DH in the game on Whirlwind Field, going 1-5 (1B, P-6, F-8, 6-3, K) while batting once in each of the first five innings.

HAGSAG: Unlike a lot of the players that come through here, Aramis Ademan is a legit shortstop. He will not be moved to another position.

He is an athletic, fluid defender with a strong arm, and he can hit, too. I saw him hit a HR onto the south bank of the Red Mountain Freeway last year at Extended Spring Training, and while that might not be typical for him (he really is more of a slashing-type hitter), it does show that he can turn on a pitch and give it a ride when the opportunity presents itself.

Areman is the real deal.

I think Ademan is still really young, so if he's still gotta work his way all the way through the Cubs American minor league system, is he the type of guy who may end up replacing Addison Russell around 2021, that is if Russell can't be signed long term? Obviously that's a long way out to project, but just wondering if we have any other SS in our system with more talent?

In reply to by Lester's rattl…

LRB: It would have been Gleyber Torres before the Chapman trade, but I would say as things stand right now and given it's a long ways off and a lot can happen in the meantime, Aramis Ademan would now probably be the most-likely eventual replacement for Addison Russell - IF - Russell walks after 2021 - AND - the Cubs don't decide to move Javy Baez back to SS. (I suspect Baez would be more-amenable to a long-term Castro or Rizzo-like contract extension than a Boras client like Russell would be, and so Baez actually could end up replacing Russell at SS in 2022).

I worry that Morel will lose starts at 3B as long as this roster lacks a compelling DH.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.
