Lubo Long-Ball Highlights Four-Run Third at Sloan Park

Ed Howard tripled and scored in the 1st inning, collected an RBI on a fielder's choice and scored a run in the 3rd, and reached base on an error and scored in the 7th, Jefferson Rojas blooped an RBI single into short RF, stole a base, and scored a run in the 1st and walked and scored in the 3rd, Ismael Mena belted a triple into the RF corner leading off the bottom of the 3rd and scored a run, Geuri Lubo blasted a three-run HR onto the LF berm to cap a four-run 3rd, and five pitchers combined on a five-hitter with twelve strikeouts, as the Cubs defeated the Athletics 8-1 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Tuesday morning at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

The A's were held scoreless until two outs in the top of the 9th, when an unearned run scored on a passed ball.

In EXST Cubs roster news, LHSP DJ Herz and RHRP Eduarniel Nunez  (both on the AA Tennessee 7-day IL) and INF James Triantos (on Hi-A South Bend 7-day IL) have completed their respective EXST rehab assignments and have been reinstated from the IL (Herz has been moved-up to Tennessee, and E. Nunez and Triantos have been moved-up to South Bend).

Also, OF-1B Frank Hernandez (Cubs 2019 IFA - Spain) has entered the Catcher Conversion Program at EXST. His twin brother Omar is a catcher in the Royals organization, so Frank clearly has the DNA for the job. And as a one-time two-way player (RHP / OF) with Team Spain 18U, Frank has the arm he will need as well.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Thanks Phil!

Prayerfully Frank can convert to catching successfully! Always seemed like he was hitting consistently.......

The Professor brought his old lecture notes last night in Des Moines. Five goose eggs, zero hard contact, a handful of Ks, no walks, a few comebackers, lots of off balance swings-looked like his old self.

I wonder if Taillon would be the better long-man option? Doesn't mean that's what they'll do, but I think it would be best for the team.......with Assad, Thompson, and Taillon as piggyback starters, we'd need less bullpen arms?

taillon's agent would probably fry the cubs if they did that.  boras gets a lot of heat for being a hardass because he'll talk to the media about anything, but jeff schwartz is a heavyweight, too.

if taillon's down for it, though...whatever.   there is no good way to fold hendricks back into the rotation without injury to someone else opening up a slot given current rotation construction.

Yeah there’s no chance Taillon moves to the pen. If anything he should probably still be on the IL or making a rehab start or two. He’s one month into a 4 year free agent deal, it would be kinda crazy to demote him based on that, even without consideration past that

In reply to by Dolorous Jon Lester

Unless Taillon really turns things around, I don't see him still in the rotation by the latest sometime during '24, but definitely not after; if he's not one of the best 5 or 6 options in our rotation, should his contract matter? I understand he was signed for 4 years, and should be given some leash; but shouldn't performance be the barometer to spots on the MLB roster, irrespective of status? If he turns it around, great; the more good options the better............

I don't know what's to be gained by Wesneski pitching in Iowa. To have an arm like his to pitch the 6th thru 9th innings once or twice a week would be a helluva lot more benefit to him and the Cubs.

He would do what Assad did last night, only better.

Assad, Merryweather, Boxberger  -- lots of better choices to option or DFA.

And Ben Brown today-looks like he’s on a pretty fast track. 10 Ks in 5 scoreless. 👏

Kohl Franklin to TN

That's Wicks, Jensen, Herz, Palencia, Hodge and Franklin.

Remember Luke Little is already in their pen.

Is Jensen or Palencia moving to the pen as well?

Or, is Wicks going to Iowa?

I noticed Riley Thompson came in from the pen today for Iowa.

Interesting development

I see only 3 starters in that group:  Wicks, Hodge and Franklin and Franklin has been working only 4 or 5 innings at most.

Herz just got to TN.
Palencia was in the rotation there but it's been reported he has been sent to the Development List.
So, Walker Powell probably gets the 5th spot for now.
Wicks
Hodge
Franklin
Herz
Powell
Little and Jensen "light Piggyback"
I wonder if Palencia is going to be moved to the Pen now as well.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
