MLB roster rules
At 9 AM (Eastern) on Thursday 11/2 (the day after the final game of the 2023 World Series), 3B-1B Jeimer Candelario, RHP Tyler Duffey, and RHP Shane Greene will be automatically declared Article XX-B MLB free agents and will be removed from the Cubs MLB 40-man roster. They do not have to file. It is automatic. At that same time, RHP Michael Fulmer will be reinstated from the MLB 60-day IL and will be declared an Article XX-B MLB free-agent.
7/5 RE-POST: I posted this about three months ago, but here it is again since we are within a month of the 2019 MLB trade deadline...
4/9 ORIGINAL POST
There were a couple of changes of note made to MLB Rules in 2019 (they were officially approved this week), one pertaining to Trade Assignment Waivers and the MLB Trade Deadline, and the other with regard to Outright Assignment Waiver claims.
One change was reported (with much fanfare but without much detail) in the media, but the other one was not reported at all.
So here they both are (in somewhat greater detail).
Along with the new CBA, there have been several changes to MLB roster rules this year, some of which you may already be aware, and some you might not know about...
There seems to be some confusion (not here, but elsewhere) about why a player would be Designated for Assignment (DFA), and then subsequently be optioned to the minors.
