More Errors at Salt River Fields Than Can Be Imagined in Your Philosophy

Emerson Jimenez (2012 NDFA - Dominican Republic - $275K bonus) stroked a two-run single and David Bergin and Miguel Dilone followed with RBI triples to highlight a four-run 3rd inning, Hamlet Marte belted an RBI triple in the 6th and doubled and scored in the 8th, Marcos Derkes collected three hits, stole a base, scored a run, and drove-in another, and Ryan Garvey blasted a two-run home run, leading the Rockies to a 9-6 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action thiis morning on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.  

Kevin Brown (a double and three walks) and Zak Blair (two singles and two walks) reached base four times a piece for the Cubs in a losing cause. (The Cubs left 11 men on base and had three runners thrown out on the bases).

The two teams combined to commit nine errors, including six by the Cubs and three by the Rockies.

Casper Wells (back spasms) continued his EXST rehab, serving as a DH and batting five times (once in each of the first five innings). He drew a two-out walk in the 1st inning, reached base on an HBP in the 2nd, lined out to 2nd base in the 3rd, ripped a two-run double down the LF line in the 4th and then later scored on a Ricardo Marcano RBI single, and struck out (swinging) on a 1-2 slider (from a LHP) in the 5th. 

In EXST roster news, OF Jorge Soler (hamstring) has completed his rehab assignment at Extended Spring Training and will be rejoining AA Tennessee. In seven EXST Cactus League games (34 Plate Appearances), Soler hit 179/265/214 with five hits (four singles and a double), one walk, three HBP, five strikeouts, two sacrifice flies, five RBI, and one stolen base. 

Also, RHP Michael Wagner has been moved up to Kane County from Extended Spring Training. The 22-year old 6'4 200 Wagner was the Cubs 15th round pick in last June's MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Diego, where he was the USD closer, second-team All-American, and a teammate of Cubs mega-prospect Kris Bryant.

more errors than attendance...cold. also...unrelated hurrah for tonite's ESPN announce crew being good (for a national announce crew) for this chc/cws game. the last espn game was an exercise in futility and stupidity for the announce crew.

i miss the chemistry of len/bob...len/jd can't seem to get their banter or jokes working beyond calling the game and it comes off clumbsy. jd can make some jokes that make "bad joke bob" seem like the most brilliant comedian of our time and jd doesn't seem to know what to do with len's nerdiness. jd was good in houston, but isn't clicking well with len. i had better hopes for their chemistry.

Len is okay if you want to see a fan elevated to play-by-play announcer. He doesn't particularly understand the game, and he says a lot of dumb things. They're not memorable dumb things, just dumb things. If you want examples, I'll watch him for a week and make a list. JD is fine, I think. Played the game and knows it, and best sense of humor in the business. Yesterday the Sox catcher goes to the mound and JD says, They're out of timeouts. To me, Brenly always talked down to his audience, like a third-grade teacher, and Len was the third grader he was talking to.

If my MILB app is correct, Kris Bryant has 19 walks. He also has 5 stolen bases and 69 total bases in 115 ABs (it doesn't list PAs) All the more reason to get Olt that playing time and find out what he can do. Bryant isn't exactly sitting around waiting. A little foresight here, Capt Happy. K?

Story is Hawk wanted window put in Cubs booth because it was cold Monday nite. And it was cold. Stone told Hawk they wouldn't because that's how Harry did games . Hawk didn't say anything about it on air but was bitching about it in between ininngs. Stone told Sox brass have back up ready for next nites game. Sure nuff, Mike Huff Tuesday So small victory for Cubs thus week as they almost off'd that old coot .

Re: Hoffmann injury and Cubs

I think their board blew up a bit with the Hoffman injury. I've heard them a bit with Fedde, although he didn't pitch last weekend and was pushed back to Saturday this week. Theo saw Nick Gordon's last game earlier this week. I don't think Beede is in their mix and I think their link to Alex Jackson is a bit overblown.

Some of it is SSS, but some of it is a continuation of what we saw last year - poor plate discipline, overaggressiveness throughout the count. I don't think he hits .169 or strikes out 40% of the time all year, but I think it's cooled some of the enthusiasm over Baez, and rightly so. He wasn't ready in March and he's not ready now.

Are there specific mechanical things that Javier Baez needs to do, or is it just hoping that with more PAs, seeing more pitches, and maturity, he'll get a little more selective?

    Those HR totals are probably unrealistic but I'll keep them there for now.

    i know it's still very early, but i'd like to go into the xmas-to-newyears part of the off-season with something more than...*checks list*...patrick wisdom avoids arbitration with a 1-year deal

    also, steven brault retired and was spotted at the winter meetings with a demo reel and making contacts trying to break into broadcasting (not a joke).  unless he's more optimistic than talented (we already know he can sing) he should make it one day because he seems to be very serious about it.

    it's great to take care of 2 roster spots in 1 player, and i'm sure the team will cut into the pay with the amount of merch/etc he can sell just by being attached to the team....but yeah, i'm not mad the cubs didn't go that extreme.

    I'm getting the feeling that Todd Walker might be a Shaw comp. A valuable hit first player but limited albeit not awful on defense. Hopefully, he has more upside. Not a bad floor if Steve Garvey is his ceiling.

    AZ Phil - If that's the level of return, I would want NO part of that trade to Cleveland for Clase and Bieber. I have some faith that the Cubs have a strong plan for which prospects they will keep (even if they dangle them in trade talks) and which they will move, because they have plenty of solid prospects they can trade but they shouldn't be trading any of the ones they hope will be future core players. Some guys are redundant, so I hope they choose the right players to keep and the right players to move. It's always important for a team to know its own minor league players better than scouts from other teams (obviously), but I don't think that's always been the case for the Cubs and many other clubs. 

    Cubster - I watched an interview with Carter Hawkins a couple days ago where he said that although Morel hasn't gotten into any Dominican games at 1B, the Cubs did send coaches down with Morel to work on first base skills during practice. So he is developing those skills, whether the Cubs end up using him there or not will probably be dependent on a lot of factors including how those coaches think he looks at the position while training.

    He could still play SS at Double-A, but Vazquez, Hoerner, and Swanson are much better defensively, arm strength or not. I'd be good leaving Shaw at SS with McGeary and Ballesteros around, but by the first of June (?), 1B might make sense in DM.

    i have no reason to see a problem, it just seems like it's his most obvious reason to give pause on him at 1st.

    the cubs situation dictates 2nd/SS isn't an option.  his arm dictates 3rd isn't an option.  1st or CF seems to be his best path and he's only played CF in summer ball back in highschool/college...and of course PCA is a better + closer to the bigs CF.

    it's a lot safer to say he's made for 1st than it is he's made for 3rd.  even as a SS his arm is weak, and it's not like his glove is so great he needs to stay in the middle-IF.
