Pelicans Gobble Nuts & Tourists Fly Past Cubs at Riverview

Jesse Hodges belted a solo HR and singled, Jordan Hankins singled twice, drove-in a run, and scored another, and Jake Stinnett tossed five innings of one-run ball as the Cubs took a 4-1 lead through five innings, but the Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies Lo-A affiliate) scored four in the 6th, two in the 8th, and two more in the 9th, to rally to a 9-7 victory over the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) on Field #5. and Jacob Rogers and Kevin Brown hammered doubles and scored, Shawon Dunston Jr and Jeimer Candelario drilled RBI singles, and Wes Darvill slugged a two-run home run to highlight a five-run 3rd, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate) cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Modesto Nuts (Rockies Hi-A affiliate) on Field #6, in Cactus League Minor League game action this afternoon at Mesa CubTown at Riverview Park.

Brown (two doubles and a single) and Candelario (two singles and a double) collected three hits a piece for the Pelicans.

Chris Denorfia (hamstring rehab) saw his first game action in a couple of weeks, serving as a DH for Myrtle Beach and going 1-3. He led-off each of the first three innings, flying out F-9 in his first AB, bouncing back to the pitcher 1-3 his second time up, and then clubbing a ringing double into the right-centerfield gap in his third Plate Appearance.

While Denorfia jogged somewhat gingerly into second base and looked to be something less than 100% on his double, a minute later he went full-tilt from second to home to score on the Dunston ground RBI single to center.

South Bend RHP Zach Hedges had a tough outing while piggy-backing with Stinnett on Field #5. Coming in with a 4-1 lead in the top of the 6th, Hedges allowed eight run (all earned) on nine hits (including two doubles, a triple, and a home run) and two walks (plus a wild pitch) and no strikeouts in four innings of work.

Here are the abridged box scores from the two games (Cubs players only):

Comments

Albert Almora, who left yesterday's Tennessee game at Riverview Park with a knee injury (last seen limping to the clubhouse), was back on the field today, fully participating in morning drills (baserunning, fielding and BP) on Field #5.

Also, Dan Vogelbach has been practicing his bunting (he was out on Field #6 at 8 AM this morning), and has gotten pretty good at bunting balls toward 3rd base to defeat the extreme shift he usually faces when batting.

When soler hits a line drive he should always take the extra base. Not because he's fast, but because he punishes the ball so thoroughly that is is oblong and cannot be thrown in a straight line. Witness: tonight's 2B against AZ. Just scorched.

Also a year ago I would have bet on Soler to be a bust due to lack of playing time and injuries, and Baez was a top 5 prospect. Time will tell but goes to show how fluid the prospect business is...

castro just nailed cubs minor leaguer carlos penalver in the knee...with a throw...that sailed into the dugout rather than a 1st baseman's mitt.

So wood to rotation and Jackson as the long man, so rotation and bullpen are set. Any word on final position players yet? When do they have to announce?

WISCGRAD: The 25-man MLB Active List roster limit deadline is 3 PM (Eastern) tomorrow (Sunday), but that only means a club cannot have more than 25 players on its MLB Active Roster by that time. It's not like November 20th when the reserve lists have to be filed with the MLB office. The MLB 25-man roster does not have to be"announced" or submitted to MLB and a club can continue to make roster moves after that (in the case of the Cubs, right up until game time if they wish).

Placing Wada, Denorfia, Turner, and Beeler on the 15-day DL (retroactive to Friday March 27th - the furthest back a DL stint can be backdated during Spring Training) would get the Cubs MLB Active List down to 25, so that's fairly obvious and it could be done anytime today or prior to 3 PM (Eastern) tomorrow. Players placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to 3/27 can be reinstated beginning on Saturday April 11th.

So the Cubs could add Jonathan Herrera to the 40 (and to the 25-man roster) either before or after 3 PM (Eastern) tomorrow, as long as a corresponding move is made to remove another player from the 25-man roster. (The Cubs MLB Reserve List stands at 39 after Drake Britton was outrighted, so nobody has to be removed from the 40-man roster if Herrera is added... they could even make a waiver claim if they see a name they like).

So it seems like the most likely scenarios are:

1) Coghlan's neck is OK, Szczur goes down to AAA, and Sweeney and Herrera make the team.

2) Coghlan's neck is not OK and he is DLed, and Szczur, Sweeney, and Herrera all make the team.

3) Coghlan's neck is OK, Sweeney is traded, and Szczur and Herrera make the team.

4) Coghlan's neck is OK, and the team goes with one less infielder and Szczur and Sweeney make the team, Herrera does not

5) The Cubs claim someone off waivers and that player makes the team along with some combination of the names above.
