ha.  the mccutchen AB where he almost homered in the 6th (foul) got me thinking about the mccutchen/furries thing.

it's a coincidence, but mccutchen does VERY well at the plate when pittsburgh's annual furry convention (Anthrocon) is in town and there's a home game.  all 4 days of the convention will be home games for PIT.

be on the lookout for mccutchen's twitter account to simply post "Furries" during the week of the convention.

he's aware of the coincidence and plays into it.

baseball is weird.  social media is weird.  furries are also weird, but whatever...ya'll do ya'll.…

i love that wrigley is packed, but you can tell a lot of these fans are new(ish) to in-person baseball.

pop outs that don't even reach the warning track are getting huge fan pops as possible homers.

that said, it's good there's so much fresh eyes on the field product.  the game needs a constant influx of newer fans.

i noticed a lot of 20-somethings really getting into baseball during the covid era.  they also really got into baseball cards, but that's another side show in itself.  the baseball card boom died down a bit, but the interest in baseball overall seems to have stuck around.

"The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports the Mets offered first baseman Pete Alonso a seven-year, $158 million contract extension last summer."

22.5m a year.  on one hand, no way his agent would sign that.  on the other hand, the mets obviously see some warning signs long-term...most likey his lack of body conditioning.  he's got a very pre-roids era slugger build.

imanaga walking the leadoff man on 5 pitches.  really rare for a dude that hates to walk anyone in any situation.

As reported by Bleacher Nation: 26 year old 6’5, 225 lb lefty career relief pitcher.  Has had 30+% strikeout rates at times but wildness too. Low velocity, 91-93 mph fb.

Richard Lovelady is now a Ray. Anyone have a report on the new acquisition, Belge?

    great stuff...not great news, though.

veterans get a lot of rope to hang themselves, especially ones that have been important to the team.

this team is trying to stay competitive with a playoff quality roster under heavy injury concern, though.

i would welcome wesn in the rotation...wicks is due back soon...there's 4 guys solidly locked into the rotation and none of them are named hendricks (though taillon's last start kinda stung).

Just for the halibut I went back over Kyle Hendricks' seven outings and looked at what would have happened if he had been allowed to go only once through the order each time he pitched:

    15.1 IP, 15 H, 10 R (10 ER), 3 BB, 18 K, 19/9 GO/AO, 1 HBP, 3 HR
    5.85 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, .262 OppBA, .282 OppOBP, 409 OppSLG (.691 Opp OPS)
    5% walk-rate and a 28% K-rate

In his first four games he would have thrown exactly two innings per outing (8.0 IP) before going exactly once through the order, allowing a combined seven runs on 11 hits, two walks, one HBP, and one HR, with 10 K.

In his next three outings he would have thrown two full innings plus part of a third inning in each game before getting once through the order (a combined 7.1 IP), while allowing three runs on four hits, one walk, and two HR, and eight K.

Certainly not stellar when he goes exactly once through the order, but it's nowhere near as bad as it is when he is allowed to go deeper into a game.

Iowa scores three runs on no hits in the 5th inning of their game. A HBP and five walks. Gotta love the minors!

legit impressed how many fans are still around to see amaya hit a homer to make it a 9-1 game in the bottom 8th.

this game has been a lost cause for many innings and skeenes left a few innings ago.

nice to see fans stick around for this stinker.

i imagine he'll get another start.  i'm not a fan of him getting another start, but the one before this one was...okay-ish.

if his next start is anything like 6 of his 7 starts i'd like to see 8m worth of management kick in and have him moved to the pen while he "works on things."

chicago house music cannot be ignored.  i'm gonna give them a pass.

    officially done.  just done.

it's been nice, but we got wesn in the pen for this.  hendricks not only isn't the future, he's not the present.

7 games, only 1 of them worth a damn.  4-7 earned runs in every other start.

My working theory on Cubs injuries is that post game raves are just going too hard.

Julian Merryweather cannot be reinstated from the 60-day IL any earlier than June 5th.

Couns says Merryweather to begin throwing in AZ on Monday.

I'd imagine that probably puts him 1.5 months away

Dansby took live BP off Wicks and Smyly today.
