As things stand now, most likely to get added to the 40 post-2024 (if not sooner):

    POSITION PLAYERS
    1. Owen Caissie, OF (Rule 5 Draft eligible - lock)
    2. B. J. Murray, 3B (Rule 5 Draft eligible - very likely)
    3. Pablo Aliendo, C (likely because he is a minor league 6YFA post-2024)

    PITCHERS:
Some combination of RHRP Zac Leigh (just got promoted to AAA), LHRP Riley Martin (at AAA), RHRP Frankie Scalzo Jr (closer at AA), and RHSP Matt Thompson (in AA starting rotation - acquired from White Sox for Bailey Horn) -- all four are Rule 5 Draft-eligible post-2024, and then just because they are free-agents post-2024 RHRP Ethan Roberts (back from TJS and now pitching out of the AAA Iowa pen - can be a post-2024 second contract minor league FA) and RHRP Cam Sanders (struggled at AAA but now throwing "lights out" at AA - post-2024 6YFA).

Also, RHSP Kohl Franklin is a minor league 6YFA post-2024 and he will miss the balance of the 2024 season after undergoing right forearm / elbow surgery, so he will likely be offered a substantial $$$ 2025 minor league successor contract to stay with the Cubs and continue his rehab in Mesa.

Again, as I mentioned here a few days ago, the Rockies will be trading catcher Elias Diaz (a 2023 N. L. All-Star who is a FA post-2024), and the Cubs do have a lot of depth in their system, so...

Although it didn't save the Titanic, sometimes rearranging the deck chairs can give a club a bit of a spark, not to mention a wake-up call to anyone who might be in a rut (especially if it is partly mental, which it usually is).

Keep in mind that Busch, Morel, Wisdom, and Madrigal can be optioned (Morel gets a 4th option this year but it won't be there next year), and although none of them "have anything more to prove" at AAA, they all might benefit from a kick-in-the-rear jump-start.

Meanwhile, some combination of PCA (can be recalled on 5/30), Brennen Davis, Alexander Canario, and/or Matt Mervis could get called-up, and red-hot switch-hitting 3B B. J. Murray (a Cubs Top 15 prospect who is hitting 341/481/707 - 1.188 OPS with four HR, three doubles, and 11/8 BB/K, and two E-5 over his last twelve games after an ice-cold start) could get selected to the 40 (he is Rule 5 Draft-eligible post-2024 and was already very likely to get added to the 40 post-2024 anyway).

I didn't mention Owen Caissie (he is also Rule 5 Draft-eligible post-2024) because he hasn't been playing for the last few days, but he is a lock to get added to the 40 post-2024, and so he could get called up at anytime.

When Joey Wendle signed with the Mets last November he received an automatic Article XX-B "no trade" through June 15th, which is a reason why the Mets had to release him (and be on the hook for his $2M salary minus the pro-rated MLB minimum salary after he signed with another club) if they wanted him off the roster. Then once he was released and signed with the Braves, the automatic "no trade" went away, and so now the Braves can trade him rather than just release him (something the Mets could not do).

The reason I had mentioned Wendle as somebody the Cubs should pursue after he was DFA'd by the Mets is because the Cubs seem bent on having an actual back-up shortstop other than Hoerner (first Mastrobuoni, and now Vazquez) as well as a veteran infielder who can be a late-inning defensive replacement for Morel at 3B (Madrigal), which takes up two of the five bench spots.

However, Wendle actually checks both boxes (he is a legit SS who can also be a late-inning defensive replacement at 3B), not to mention a LH-hitter (so he can give Hoerner, Swanson, or Morel a blow against a tough RHSP), and he has enough speed to where he can be a PR / ghost runner for one of the catchers in an extra-inning situation. And since he would take the job currently invested in two different players (and cost only the pro-rated MLB minimum salary), carrying both Vazquez and Madrigal would no longer be necessary and so it would open up a roster slot for PCA.

So since the Braves just lost Acuna for the year and will apparently be playing Kelenic in LF and Duvall in RF for awhile (they have been platooning with each other in LF), the Cubs could offer the Braves Darius Hill, an MLB-ready AAA high-contact LH-hitting outfielder not on the MLB 40-man roster who will almost certainly never play for the Cubs and who can play all three OF spots. The Cubs have already traded one such AAA player (INF Jake Slaughter) to Seattle to preemptively acquire Tyson Miller after he was DFA'd, without having to wait & hope that they could claim him off waivers, and they can very easily do the same thing with respect to offering Darius Hill for Joey Wendle.

Of course that doesn't mean the Braves won't eventually try and acquire an established MLB corner OF sometime prior to the MLB Trade Deadline (Tommy Pham comes immediately to mind), but Darius Hill actually could provide the Braves with some value as an MLB-ready high-contact LH-hitting OF in the meantime.

    Defensive whiz Nick Madrigal?

Don’t forget they also can’t throw out baserunners. Their pitch framing and game calling is just SO worth it, we’d probably have a White Sox level of wins without those attributes they bring to the table. (Sarcasm obviously)

i would blame over-managing, but i don't even care about blame right now.

cubs are about to be a .500 team and they've been playing like it for so many weeks i'm kinda numb to it.

can't blame the injuries anymore.  it's just suck.

there's major upside all over, but there's major collective suck currently.
