The Cubs have released 15 minor leaguers:
SP Bryan Hudson hurled five innings of shutout ball with seven strikeouts and Josue Huma singled twice, doubled, scored a run, and drove-in another, as the Eugene/Mesa Cubs (soon to be the Cubs Extended Spring Training squad) blanked the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Cubs) 4-0 in Minor League Spring Training game action Saturday afternoon on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.
The game was pre-planned as a seven-inning contest.
The majority of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans were excused from having to play in the game so that they could prepare for their trip Sunday to South Carolina (the Pelicans open their season Tuesday night in an exhibition game versus Charleston Southern University), but the three MB pitchers who were scheduled to throw on Saturday (Hudson, Peyton, and King) did pitch in the game, albeit with the youngsters from the Eugene/Mesa squad playing behind them (and it turned out to be a winning combination, too!).
Meanwhile the South Bend Cubs continue to struggle at the plate, striking out nine more times for a total of 29 strikeouts and only one run scored in their last 18 innings over the past two days.
In South Bend Cubs roster news, RHSP Yovanny Cruz has been moved-down to Eugene/Mesa from the South Bend squad.
And so this is the South Bend Cubs provisional Opening Day roster (27 players - two players over the 25 man Opening Day roster limit):
STARTING PITCHERS: Faustino Carrera, Derek Casey, Eury Ramos, Cam Sanders, and Riley Thompson
PIGGY-BACK STARTER: Brailyn Marquez
BULLPEN: Dalton Geekie, Ryan Lawlor, Riley McCauley, Zach Mort, Eugenio Palma, Jeffrey Passantino, Peyton Remy, and Ethan Roberts
CATCHERS: Eric Gonzalez, Rafelin Lorenzo, and Gustavo Polanco
INFIELDERS: Tyler Durna, Levi Jordan, Fidel Mejia, Rafael Narea, Andy Weber, and Delvin Zinn
OUTFIELDERS: D. J. Artis, Cole Roederer, Jonathan Sierra, and Nelson Velazquez
One pitcher and one position player will need to be taken off the roster prior to Opening Day.
Here is the box score from the game:
The Cubs released four players from Minor League Camp this morning:
Tyler Alamo, 1B (Cubs 2013 24th round draft pick - Cypress HS - Cypress, CA)
Luis Ayala, OF (Cubs 2013 IFA - Venezuela)
Michael Cruz, C-1B (Cubs 2016 7th round draft pick - Bethune Cookman)
Austin Upshaw, INF (Cubs 2017 13th round draft pick - Kennesaw State)
The Cubs released nine players from Minor League Camp Sunday morning:
Ryan Court, INF
Austin Filiere, 1B-3B (Cubs 2017 8th round draft pick - MIT)
Evan Marzilli, OF
Carlos Ramirez, RHRP
Jose Rosario, RHRP (Cubs 2008 IFA)
Chris Singleton, OF (Cubs 2017 19th round draft pick - Charleston Southern)
Jake Steffens, RHRP (Cubs 2017 29th round draft pick - Santa Clara)
Chesny Young, INF (Cubs 2014 14th round draft pick - Mercer)
Mike Zagurski, LHRP
Tyler Durna singled twice, doubled, scored a run, knocked-in a run with a sacrifice fly, and stole a base, D. J. Artis reached base three times (a single and two walks) and scored a run, Dalton Hurd smacked an RBI triple and a single and scored a run, Josue Huma ripped a two-run triple, and SP Cam Sanders tossed three innings of no run/no hit ball, leading the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Cubs) to a 4-1 victory over the Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies Lo-A affiliate) on Field #5, and Aramis Ademan belted a HR leading off the bottom of the 1st inning, singled, walked and scored, Miguel Amaya roped an RBI double into the LF corner and scored, Jimmy Herron drilled an RBI single, reached base on an HBP, and stole a base, and Jon Lester hurled six innings (87 pitches) of two-run ball (five hits, two walks, seven strikeouts, and a wild pitch) and combined with Bryan Hudson to fan 13, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate) edged the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies Hi-A affiliate) 3-2 on Field #6, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Monday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.
The rest of the Cubs MLB squad had the day off, but Victor Caratini came over to the Riverview backfields to catch Lester, and he had one AB in each of the first six innings (while he and Lester were in the game), going 1-5 with a double and a walk.
In Cubs Minor League Camp news, OF Jamie Galazin (Cubs 2018 22nd round draft pick - St. John's) is being converted to a RHP. He was drafted by the Cubs as an outfielder, but he did pitch a bit in college (10 games), so he is at least somewhat familiar with the pitching thing. Whether Galazin will be used strictly as a pitcher or possibly as the now popular "two-way player" remains to be seen, but in either case he will be remaining at Extended Spring Training while he proceeds forward with the mound conversion.
Here are the abridged box scores from the games (Cubs players only):

3/17 ORIGINAL POST:
In the aftermatth of 15 players being sent to Minor League Camp from MLB Camp on Friday, the Cubs released seven players from Minor League Camp Sunday morning, and several others have been reassigned to new squads to make room for the new arrivals from Sloan Park.
Patrick Mooney at The Athletic is reporting that Cubs Minor League Field Coordinator & Minor League Catching Coordinator (he did both jobs) Tim Cossins is joining Brandon Hyde's MLB coaching staff in Baltimore. So it will take two people to fill Cossins' shoes.
The Cubs have released 2014 22nd round draft pick 1B Joe Martarano.
First, Bryant takes home the minor league HR crown over his buddy Joey Gallo...for that he got a trophy and $200 per home run.

men on and steele in trouble...of course it's cuas up in the pen. cuas isn't trash, but wow...this is our high-leverage guy? he's just a bit wild and not exactly hard to hit for a guy being called on so much to deal with guys on base.

i am becoming increasingly not opposed to signing bellinger if the bidding doesn't get insane. 1st and CF both need "insurance."
