3/31 UPDATE
The Cubs released ten players from Minor League Camp yesterday, including two one-time 5th round draft picks:

Cubs Youngsters Swept at Diablo

RHSP Alexander Blackford hurled three innings of no-run/no-hit ball with six strikeouts and Zach Houchins drove-in four runs with two run-scoring doubles, leading the Arkansas Travelers (Los Angeles Angels AA affiliate) to a 9-2 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (Chicago Cubs AA affiliate) on Field #4, and Chad Hinshaw belted an RBI double to key a three-run 1st inning as the Salt Lake Bees (Angels AAA affiliate) edged the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) 4-3 on Field #7, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Monday afternoon at the Diablo Stadium Complex in Tempe, AZ.

Carlos Penalver drilled an RBI double and a single and stole a base for the Smokies in a losing cause.

It was a mixed-bag as far as the Cubs pitching was concerned.

Iowa SP Eric Jokiisch threw strikes (78%) but was (once again) hit, this time to the tune of seven hits in just three inings, Tennessee RHP Preston Morrison allowed seven runs (all earned) on eight hits (a triple, a double, and six singles, plus an HBP) in only two innings of work, and Iowa lefty reliever Edgar Olmos had difficulty finding the strike zone (25 pitches - only 13 strikes) and did not record an out.

On the positive side, LHRP Gerardo Concepcion (working in the AAA game) threw two innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts and was consistently 93-94 MPH with his fastball, and I-Cubs LHRP Scott Barnes continues to wipe out opposing hitters with strikeouts, recording two more today in his one inning of work.

There were some roster additions to provide bench and bullpen depth for the game, as LHRP Sam Wilson was temporarily moved-up to the Tennessee roster from the Myrtle Beach squad, LHP Gerardo Concepcion and C-1B Cael Brockmeyer were moved up to the Iowa roster from the Tennessee squad, and OF Roberto Caro and INF Andruw Monasterio were moved-up to the Iowa squad from the Eugene/Mesa group (Extended Spring Training).

In Minor League Camp roster news, there was quite a bit of movement in the aftermath of the Cubs sending eleven players to Minor League Camp from the MLB squad this past Friday:

IOWA to TENNESSEE: Pitchers Michael Jensen, Brad Markey, Juan Carlos Paniagua, Steve Perakslis, James Pugliese, Tayler Scott, Tyler Skulina, and Rob Zastryzny, catchers Cael Brockmeyer, Ben Carhart, and Will Remillard, and infielder Bryant Flete;

TENNESSEE: to MYRTLE BEACH: Pitchers Craig Brooks, James Farris, Ryan Kellogg, Jeremy Null, Jasvir Rakkar, and Michael Wagner, and catcher Tyler Pearson;

Here is the abridged box score from the two games played at Diablo Park (Cubs players only):

Cubs Cooperate with Angels to Edge Snakes at Diablo

Shawon Dunston Jr (Cubs) and Natanael Delgado (Angels) stroked consecutive two-out run-scoring singles to highlight a three-run 1st inning, as the Angels/Cubs co-op team edged the Diamondbacks 5-4 in Opening Day Arizona Advanced Instructional League game action this afternoon at Diablo Stadium Complex Field #7 in Tempe, AZ.

How's the Future Looking?

The major league team is going through the motions of a 100-loss season and is frankly, boring as hell right now. There's plenty to keep our eyes on if we need a baseball fix, will Castro and Rizzo rebound/improve, is Olt a legitimate starter or just a platoon-mate, can Barney, Schierholtz and Hammel do enough to get some trade value in return and what exactly will Samardzija's trade value be in June/July? But the answers to those questions aren't coming for awhile and neither are the future questions in Baez, Bryant and the rest of the minor leaguers, but I find the hope in their bats and arms far more interesting than the reality of the Chicago High Draft Picks currently playing in Milwaukee.

    Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

    At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    AZ Phil:
    Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

    Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.
