Morelli Extends Hit Streak to 14 As Cubs Tarnish Angels at Fitch Park

Runey Davis drove-in four runs with a bases-loaded triple and an RBI single, Sergio Burruel knocked-in two more with a two-run single, and Jesus Morelli extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI double, leading the EXST Cubs to an 8-4 victory over the EXST Angels in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action at Fitch Park Field #2 this morning in Mesa.

Cuban Defector Makes U. S. Debut at Fitch Park

Jae-Hoon Ha went 4-4 with two triples, a double, and a single, scored three runs, and drove-in two more, Jesus Morelli reached base four times on a single, a double, a triple, and a walk, scored twice, and knocked-in three, and George Matheus had two singles, a double, and two RBI, but it was left to Wes Darvill to drive-in the winning run as the youngster bounced a single through a drawn-in infield with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th, rallying one squad of Cubs to an 8-7 victory over one squad of the Giants on Field #3, while over on Field #2, Alvaro Ramirez doubled and tripled, drove-in one run, and scored another, Chris Huseby doubled, walked and scored a run, and Pin-Chieh Chen had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI, but the other squad of Giants clubbed five triples, a double, and a home run, and took advantage of two costly Rafael Disla errors to score four unearned runs, en route to an 8-4 victory over the other squad of Cubs, as the EXST Cubs and EXST Giants split a Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader this morning at Fitch Park in Mesa.

21-year old RHP Juan Yasser Serrano made his debut with the Cubs on Field #3, tossing a 13-pitch, ten strike, 1-2-3 inning (4-3, 4-3, and 5-3). Serrano is the Cuban Defector who was signed by the Cubs for a reported $250K bonus this past March, and he appears to be a polished hurler who should advance quickly through the system. I would think he will probably get assigned initially to Daytona (fellow Cuban Defector OF Smaily Borges is already there), once he has gets his arm strength up to where it needs to be. Serrano is not a big guy (maybe 6’1), and he has a solid (almost stocky) build.

Sanchez Continues Rehab as Giants Sweep Cubs at Fitch Park

The EXST Cubs dropped both games in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader at Fitch Park this morning, as one EXST Giants squad won 6-0 on Field #2, while the other squad won 8-4 on Field #3. Both games were pre-scheduled six-inning affairs, and the games were played simultaneously.

Freddy Sanchez (knee & shoulder surgeries) continued his rehab assignment with the EXST Giants, playing 2B and batting four times in the game on Field #2. Facing RHP Jesse Ginley, Sanchez lined into a 6-4 DP (near triple play) with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs in the top of the 1st, ripped a single with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the 3rd against RHP Jadel Mendez and then scored one batter later on an RBI triple (and Sanchez appeared to be a bit gimpy as he rounded 3rd headed for home), and flied out to CF in the 5th and lined out to LF in the 6th against RHP Alvido Jimenez.

Caridad Rehab Moves Up to Iowa from Extended Spring Training

LHP Marcos Perez threw four shutout innings and DH Jae-Hoon Ha homered and doubled, but the EXST Angels scored two in the 5th, three in the 7th, and two more in the 8th, to defeat the EXST Cubs 7-3 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa this morning.

With four more shutout innings today, Perez has now thrown 14-1/3 innings of shutout ball in six Extended Spring Training outings (2 GS), allowing just five hits and one walk in those 14.1 IP, while striking out 15. He also has a 17/10 GO/FO ratio, has averaged just 11.5 Pitches-Per-Inning, and has thrown 73% of his pitches strikes. I would say the Cubs pitching prospect Perez most-closely resembles is Peoria LHSP Jeffry Antigua, except Perez has better control.

it looks like rich hill may not find a 2024 contract even though he wanted to pitch in 2024.

being a guy turning 44 during spring training coming off a bad season isn't a good look if you don't have a contract by the time spring games start.

he's played 19 seasons for 13 teams.  his 337.2ip for the cubs is his 2nd highest for any team (361.1ip for the dodgers).  he's the last man standing still playing out of the 2005 cubs crew.  geo soto last played in 2017.

SD fans are just trying to concentrate on yuki matsui right now.  the rest was terrible all-around.

matsui K'd 3 with 12 pitches, 1 of them gavin lux.

Pads gave up 14 runs using 11 pitchers. 3 pitchers gave up all 14 runs during their ***checks notes*** 0.1 IP. Yep, spring training.

Only thing missing was a position player pitching.

boras is holding onto 4 "top level" FAs and ST games have officially begun.  montgomery, snell, chapman, and bellinger.

there seems to be a bunch of teams not willing to blink, but there also seems to be a slew of teams willing to snap up any of these dudes if the price is right.

at some point it may pivot to front-loaded deals with very early (and probably multiple) opt-outs.

it's still "cubs advantage" on bellinger because there's a QO hanging over him and none of the teams with money are in heavy need of a CF or 1st.

ahhh...spring baseball.  put that shit right in my veins.

the dodgers are up 8-0 after 2 innings.  joe musgrove pitched to 4 batters and didn't retire any of them...all 4 scored.

    cubs tomorrow afternoon.

Here is an interesting thought about Boras's negotiation strategy:   Going into the off-season, Boras knew MLB GMs were not convinced of Bellinger's success enough to offer a long-term and large AVV contract.  His strategy was to convince the one team that experienced Bellinger's success that a market was there to take away a beloved player and make the Cubs bid against themselves.  So far, that has not worked and Boras has to scramble to not be embarrassed by a contract much lower than promised.

The question is:   What is a scenario in which Boras and Bellinger look good signing a bad contract?  Until that plays out, I suspect Bellinger could go into the season without being signed.

it's pretty damn stupid.  don't they realize how much stadium-adjacent real estate they could buy for 77m?

no one cares about baseball talent on the field, it's all about the baseball experience around the field!

YOU HAVE TO 'C' IT (tm)

Could be Boras smoke. Could be a team trying to actually improve and win.

Chicago radio reports that the Yankees are "going after" Snell and Belli.
They've already made an offer for Snell.
They want Bellinger for CF if Judge's foot isn't right and at 1B if Rizzo starts to fall off.
    Verdugo/Stanton in LF
    Bellinger/Judge in CF
    Soto/Stanton in RF
    Rizzo/Bellinger at 1B
    Any of them at DH
That means one of those five guys isn't in the lineup every game.
If everyone were healthy, I'd imagine Rizzo would be traded eventually.
Boras' dream scenario right there !!!

Pirates extend Mitch Keller for 5 years 77 mil. Wow extending your best pitchers for 5 years? What are they, stupid or something?!
