Cubs manager Joe Maddon hasn’t ruled out starting rookie catcher Kyle Schwarber on Sunday in the series finale against the Braves but admitted he’s reluctant to try him in the outfield — for now.
“For you to see him in the outfield, he’ll need a little bit of work out there first,” Maddon said of Schwarber, 22, who hasn’t played the outfield this season after playing 36 games in left field in the minors in 2014...If there’s a left-center fielder, that might be OK...
Rotation roundup: Jason Hammel pronounced his left knee healthy enough to start Tuesday at Cincinnati, although he said he will wear a brace for a few starts for protection. Triple-A Iowa’s Dallas Beeler is lined up to start one of the doubleheader games against the Reds on Wednesday.
Minor-league watch: Infielder Javier Baez is recovering from a fractured left ring finger in Arizona. Left-hander Zac Rosscup (left shoulder) is close to leaving Arizona to continue his rehab after throwing a scoreless inning Wednesday.
