Sunday Funnies. Where do you want to go, Cubs?

So, we were driving back from Thanksgiving in North Carolina and...you know what it's like when you've been driving for 8 hours straight - you need a break.
We pulled into some rest stop just outside Illinois, and like every rest stop, they had a bunch of brochures.
I rubbed my eyes.
I was so tired but they all seemed to be about the Cubs somehow.
Destinations, places to go, things to...
"Welcome to Optimism?
What?
Do I want to go All The Way?
Visit Hope Springs, Illinois?
Thought maybe there was some delayed chemical reaction in my brain from all the marshmallow yams and Zinfandel.
Who wouldn't want to see Beautiful October?
Or go Deep with Anthony Rizzo, into the Win Column with Jake Arrieta, or simply experience Never Sucking at Baseball Again.
Count me in, man!
I was about to grab one that said "The World Series" when my wife said, "Come ON! We still have hours to go!"

I took a quick photo with my phone and we hauled.
Forgot about it til this morning.
Weird, huh?

I would love to visit "Never Sucking at Baseball Again." But I'll probably pass on "Fuck the Goat." West Virginia ain't nothing special. *rimshot*

on the heels of rsox ownership visiting j.lester on friday... "Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox will "more aggressively" pursue Max Scherzer if they lose out on Jon Lester." also, re: tulo trade rumors... "CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Rockies owner Dick Monfort "suggested to inquiring teams" at the owners meeting that Troy Tulowitzki isn't available for trade."

Charlie we stopped at a Shoney's in WV by accident, and I'm pretty sure I at least ate the goat.
O&B: I want a "FREE AGENCY SUCKS" t-shirt.
Real bad.

not much harm in holding him for another 1-2-3-4 seasons anyway...unless one believes he's peaked or due for a downturn. his contract keeps him rather cheap for his position up until 2018/19 (10m/11m) with a 16m option for 2020. imo, the team can afford to wait to be blown away by someone's offer. he showed a noticeable bit of improvement with his D this season even if it wasn't a "corner turning" performance...plus it's likely he's got some more power in him than he's showed so far (20+hr/30+doubles wouldn't shock too many people even if he's trying to do it lower in the lineup). doubt he'll be a superstar or a HOF type, but given his cheap + locked in contract, i wouldn't expect much except the moon for the dude right now.

I really don't think the Cubs have shopped him or want to shop him. For all the reasons you say but also they are badly in need of veteran presence and Castro showed some maturity and swagger last year. They need a few guys who have played a bit and he's cheap and really good. They can always move him to another position or trade him later in the contract if needed - but right now he is one of maybe 3 proven performers on the team and they can't get younger at this stage.

some stuff from Sickels in comments

Schwarber: I haven’t heard anything about his bat that is bad at all. All I’ve heard is "the Cubs were right" about his hitting.

Olt: He always lived on the edge because of the contact issue, but the fact that his glove disappeared along with the bat just screams "neurological problem" to me.

can't complain...still, it makes the SP situation weird if one of the big-3 SP is still in the picture. arreta/hammel/wood/hendricks/wada already on board and all deserving of SP slots...ejax lingering in the background...they also gave j.turner some money... i hope this isn't a consolation prize, but it's hard to complain about hammel coming back.

Cubs now have around 33 starting pitchers for 5 spots...

Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Jackson, Wood, Wada, Doubront, Turner,  Strailly, Beeler, Jokisch

Heyman saying he was looking for a 3-year deal, guessing he got it if he signed that early unless he got a sweet AAV.

My guess is 3/30 to 3/39 range.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks discussed swapping Andre Ethier for Miguel Montero before D'backs ownership vetoed the trade, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The deal would have also included Tim Federowicz going to the D'backs and a couple low-level prospects heading to the Dodgers,

Hammel appears to be 2/18 with an option for year 3. Nice deal for the club if that ends up being true!

to clarify, it's 2/18M with a $2M buyout on third year meaning 2/20 guaranteed. 3rd year is club option...haven't seen $ amount on option, but I'm guessing another $9-$10M.

@jonmorosi Jason Hammel guaranteed $18 million over 2 years, source confirms @ChrisCotillo report. Deal includes team option with $2MM buyout ...

Wow, unless there is a red flag in the medicals, that seems reasonable both in dollars and years. Now lets put a bow on the season, sign Lester, pick up David Ross to be his caddie, add a few stocking stuffers for the bench and bullpen and then sit back and start sipping on the eggnog (aka Christmas kool aid).

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
