2024 Cubs

Cubs @ Padres (Games 10-12)

The Cubs took two of three against the Dodgers. Although they were held in check by Yamamoto, the offense was able to break through against the youngsters Miller and Stone along with the Dodger's relief corps. The Cubs begin a West Coast road trip with a three game series in San Diego. See below for matchups.

Cubs vs. Rockies: Game Thread (Game 6)

The Cubs improved to 3-2 with a blowout of the Rockies on Tuesday night. They bring a relatively rested bullpen into Wednesday's game before a scheduled day off. With near freezing temperatures and precipitation in the forecast, the Cubs plan to use big lefty Luke Little as an opener. Ben Brown last pitched on Saturday and Alzolay, Merryweather, Leiter, and Neris each pitched last on Sunday. So, get ready for a true bullpen game if there is no postponement.

Cubs vs. Rockies: Game Thread (Game 5)

The Cubs improved to 2-2 on the back of six shutout innings from Imanaga in his debut and a break from the Rockies that turned a hard single to left into the equivalent of a three run homerun. Javier Assad takes the ball as the Cubs attempt to push into winning territory. In 2023, Assad followed his work representing Mexico in the World Baseball Classic by putting up a little over 100 innings in 10 starts and 22 relief appearances. He improved his walk rate compared to 2022 and has been the Cubs go-to swing man.

Cubs vs. Rockies: Game Thread (Game 4)

Shota Imanaga makes his MLB debut to kick off April. He'll represent the 1-2 Chicago Cubs as they greet Kris Bryant and the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series at Wrigley. Imanaga was the major free agent addition for the offseason after reportedly falling in love with Chicago this winter. Chicago appears to be in for some unpleasant weather this week--we'll see how Imanaga's appreciation for the setting holds up. Cold temps and wind should help Imanaga's extreme fly ball ways as long as he can maintain feeling in his fingers.

Cubs @ Rangers: Game Thread (Game 3)

Jordan Wicks looks to pick up the 0-2 Cubs following an 11-2 loss. The lefty made six strong starts for the big league squad in 2023 and one disappointing outing to end the season. He generally met expectations, commanding the strike zone and mixing a respectable fastball with a great changeup. Having lost Justin Steele to a hamstring strain and then seeing Kyle Hendricks leave game two in the 4th inning, the Cubs would surely use a carrying performance from a starting pitcher.

Cubs @ Rangers: Game 1 Thread

The Chicago Cubs begin the 2024 season Thursday evening in Arlington Texas. The Cubs' recently bruised ace, Justin Steele, gets the Opening Day start following his second consecutive season as the Cubs' best pitcher. He'll face down the reigning World Series Champion Texas Rangers and their Opening Day starter, Nathan Eovaldi.

michael busch is not impressed.  3rd straight game with a homer.

    holy f...that slider/sweeper ex-cub tyson miller has.

    the horizontal movement is insane.

morel with 2 high-quality snags at 3rd base in the 6th going to his right, a weakness of his (though not as weak as his throw accuracy).  both plays saving runs.

imanaga walks back to back batters to the first hitters up in the 6th.  he had 15 innings without a walk coming into the inning.

he gave up his first run earlier in the game, but still hasn't given up an earned run.

    mervis with another homer tonight...

porter hodge made his AAA debut and got the win throwing a scoreless inning in relief...while walking 3 and K'ing 1.

morel in the lineup saturday and playing 3rd.  hand is obviously bothering him, but he's playing.

tauchman gets the DH, because he's left handed or whatever...

mlb.tv free game of the day, btw...

TIM: Yes. I would think so. It's not like anybody is blocking him there.

So if PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, Canario, and C. Franklin are the Cubs top five outfield prospects (and all five are definitely in the Cubs Top 30), then Alfonsin Rosario is # 6 (ahead of B. Davis, Roederer, Pagan, and Pinango) and is in my Cubs Top 30 (if not in the Cubs Top 30 at BA, milb.com, et al).

Rosario as next to Myrtle Beach as a hitter?

    Thanks, always.

I guess my point is that based on past performance, majors, minors and spring training would more likely than not cement the 4A reputation with a call up, particularly as a part time occasional player.

If he tears up triple A other teams may have different thoughts even without the MLB experience. He lacks prospect pedigree primarily because of the system he’s in. Probably not the centerpiece of a trade but certainly a decent component.

Agreed. Mervis lacks prospect pedigree, and he will likely carry the trade value of a suspected quad-A guy until he shows success at the MLB level.

I also think the Cubs will show interest in a regular DH if it turns out they already have a guy who can fill that role well.
