Wednesday Funnies: Cardinals go splat

I know, it's like I'm 12 years old.
Don't really care, this is just so much fun.
Go Cubs.

ps: this gif has been repurposed from one I did in like 2010...STILL WORKS!

TIM!!! Awesome baby! You have brought your game up even more to Playoff Level.

Gents - You may know this already, but as of this AM, the Cubs are top MLB offense with a TOTAL .OPS of .823, slashing .237/.316/.506 Go Meelee! And, re the next opponent, the Mets are doing horribly against LH pitching, whereas the Dodgers have performed well. The Dodgers are somewhat the reverse with 38 K's against RH pitching in 4 Games.

With Lester and Arrieta able to pitch four games in the next series, I like our chances against either the Mets or Dodgers.

Indeed. If Arrieta pitches Game 2, he could pitch 3 games if needed. Don't know about him pitching 4 games. I think the Dodgers would match up nicely.

So, do they give out an LDS MVP title? Because dat Soler. Wow. Lead the team in OPS, RBI, and R, and he nabbed the runner at the plate in the game yesterday to preserve the tie and end the inning. That was the Soler series.

No LDS MVP trophy as far as I know. Unlike every other Playoff series with this formerly woeful team, I think many would agree that the "MVP" could go to any one of 5 or 6 people for this series. Schwarbs, Soler, Maddon (MVM), Hector Rondon, Castro, Fowler (OPS = .983)

Nice one, Tim!

Nice. Just needs some army planes shooting down at the splat and then Godzilla stomping on it.

This series could only have been sweeter if Mike Olt had crushed a few, too.

I love your cartoons. They're a blast. I'm assuming the reason the bird went down is because he got hit by a Schwarber missile?

Cubs confirmed today that the ball on the video board was the Schwarber bomb. After examining it, they put it back up there, to remain until the current Cub run is over. There was also a guy in section 538--upper deck, right field corner--who took before-and-after snapshots of the board that confirm that the ball appeared there in the bottom of the seventh. (See under Sullivan in the Trib.) I preferred to believe the ball "slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God," but this is still cool.

I think the color commentator summed it up nicely: "Mercy. What in the world..."

Dennis Eckersley

Just heard Bosio on ESPN. Probably Lester Game 1

If that's true, seems like one of two things going on: 1. Maddon is quite concerned abour Arrieta running out of gas and needs to get him one more day rest and is concerned Lester is sitting for too long between starts. 2. He is playing matchups and knows Dodgers and Mets can't use their #1 in game 1 and is confident Lester can hold his own against a #2. Either way, I don't like it at all. Tired Arrieta is more dependable than Lester on longer rest.

Bosio said it was to keep pitchers on their normal routine. Makes perfect sense to me. Don't want Lester to rest too much before starting again.

They will both be able to start two games so it doesn't really matter who pitches game one.

Game 1 starter would have to pitch on 3 days rest twice to pitch 3 times in the series. Don't think they want to push Jake that hard. Is Mickey Lolich available? Unless, of course, there are rainouts which delay the dates of the later games.

Not if the series goes 5 games. If all is healthy, pitch your clear #1 in game 1. Get the series lead, and then whether down 3-1 or 2-2, pitch your best in the pivotal game 5. With that said, I don't think all is equal. I think Cubs want to protect Arrieta a bit after his mechanics got out of whack on Monday. As for Lester it would either be 7 or 8 days rest, so don't buy the "regular rotation" story.

Agree or disagree, a good stab at an explanation: http://wrigleyville.locals.baseballprospectus...

Here's the other positive aspect of Lester first: whoever pitches Saturday will face a lower tier of the other two team's staffs. In that situation I'd rather have Lester who is the 1a behind Arietta and save Arietta for game 2 where he is more likely to beat their ace than Lester.

I don't buy that argument, though I'm sure you are not alone, and you may even be right. My view is go for the kill in game #1. Get your best pitcher out there, win that game, and then roll the dice in game #2. Lose game 1 and the Cubs could be down 3-0 in a the blink of an eye. With that said, Maddon is clearly worried about Arrieta and probably rightfully so. This gives Arrieta an extra day of rest twice in a row, while Lester has had a ton of rest the last two weeks.

"Lose game 1 and the Cubs could be down 3-0 in a the blink of an eye." Whaaaat??? 3-0??? Did you not just watched the NLDS?

Lose game 1, face Kershaw & Greinke in games #2 and #3. Didn't say we will be down 3-0, just said we could. With the pitching matchups lined up the way they are, game 1 is of critical importance for the Cubs.

Rembrandt of trolls plays "Go Cubs Go" in StL bars through some kind of remote jukebox app.

masterful. i tip my fedora to him.

That is even greater than this:

Fun fact- Just yesterday, Schwarber was listed on the Cubs roster on the website under "catchers". Today he is listed under "outfield". Shrug.

Hahaha, this post is EVERYTHING:

Hahaha--I actually know Will Leitch, from our college days. This is fun.

He looks/is nice. It's not personal. I just think he embodies the worst of Cardinals' fans.

Definitely a good guy.

NLDS winner locker room shirt...good color, great use of Wrigley in the design, stupid, stupid, wording ruins it all. "Chicago wants it more" blech.

based on tonight's wins it seems like every team is getting a "____ wants it more" shirt. it seems to be mlb mandated cheese, not home grown cubs marketing cheese.

Yes, of course...didn't mean to imply otherwise. I just think the whole MLB tag line crap is dumb. what's wrong with "Cubs, 2015 NLDS winners" while not these goofy headlines, it has been like this for awhile where the products are about selling MLB postseason and not the team. My 2007 Division winning hat has "2007 CENTRAL DIVISION CHAMPION" in big writing and a tiny Cubs "C" following. Don't understand that at all.

i didn't know until tonight it was going to be a thing for more teams. i'm kinda glad the cubs didn't come up with that one on their own because it's pretty damn cheesy.

It also looks like every team had a "Take October" t-shurt/sweatshirt.

Class by Jon Jay. Less so by some of the Cards fans who responded, but any fan base would do this.

Cute gesture. Still hate him, though.

russell martin screwed up bad...real bad...

Wow. Just wow.

Something weird/controversial happening in the Rangers/Jays game. Tuned in on the radio partway through, but sounds like a run scored on what might have been TX player interference. Jays proceeding under protest.

I think a defender's throw bounced (accidentally) off the batter's bat. Anyone watching know?

it wasnt interference...they checked with an ump conference and then with the video replay crew to make sure it was right. the delay was very long...much trash was thrown onto the field. basically, russell was throwing the ball back to the pitcher and threw it into choo's bat...runner on 3rd scored...tie game no more in the top 7th with 2 outs. if it ends like this for TOR...ow.

Based on what I'm reading, Catcher throws ball to pitcher as they always do, but hit the batters bat and goes down the field and run scores. based on commentary seems like a straight up epic error by catcher.

A perplexed Rick Sutcliffe (the "game analyst" on ESPN radio) claims it should have been a dead ball... "I don't care what the rule book says, it's a matter of right and wrong."

Somewhere Harold Reynolds is smiling & nodding in agreement.

Harold actually got it right on this one

Texas apparently feels guilty and just committed two straight errors.

...and now TOR has the bases loaded after -3- errors in a row. wow. this game is crazy.

This not the Cubs I'm watching right?

this is little league level D in the bottom 7th. i think the blacksox were the last team to play this badly in a postseason game.

MY GAWD...3 RUN HR. a 1-man TOR fail followed by a collective collapse by TEX.

Bautista should get drilled next time up. He stood at home plate forever watching his HR. That was bush league.

It was a teachable moment for my ball player about respect and how not to act.

MLB AT Bat: "Josh Donaldson pops into a force out, second baseman Rougned Odor to shortstop Andrus, run scores" Huh?

it was a popout that should have been wasn't caught. seriously, this 1/2 inning has been full of some of the worst D i've ever seen...all in a row. this ranks up there with the "bob brenley at 3rd" game level of suck.

I assume Toronto is going bonkers right now? Russel Martin is a very, very, happy man right now.

Fight now?

Soccer chants are not going to help calm a riot

Lots of pain in the ALDS so far: Texas up 2 games, heading home, lose 2 at home, then make 3 straight errors to lose the series, and have to watch Bautista act like an absolute douche while beating them. And the Astros blow a 4-run lead at home in the 8th inning of Game 4, while leading the series 2-1. Ouch, and double ouch. Lot of pain in the ALDS this year.

The catcher error that scored the Texas run was sketchy. Just saw the replay and the Texas batter sticks his bat right in front of home plate before the ball was thrown. Very sketchy, not sure that was the right call.

Bat wasn't in front of plate

Very close, if not on the corner. The angle the videos show is from the side. Either way, batters usually don't start that stretch until after the catcher throws the ball to the pitcher. I'd go as far as saying that was completely intentional.

Shady or not, read the rules and the right call was made. As long as batter is in the box, and there is no question about that, ball remains in play if hit.

HEY! Valbuena homers! Muy buena!

This game. That is all. Carry on.

he -really- needs to cue into this is a cubs broadcast and not a national/neutral broadcast.

dude...don't get excited about marlins 3-run homers.

  • crunch 3 hours 29 min ago (view)

lot of people wanted him when len left.  he's got a long game calling history, but not too much for baseball.  he did host "baseball tonight" for ESPN for a quite a while, so the game isn't a mystery to him.

i find him a bit boring/dry.  some people like that he has that oldschool "announcer voice" thing going on.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester 3 hours 47 min ago (view)

He's uhhh.. not very good at it. Glad he wasn't the hire for the main role.

wow...chris myers calling the cubs game for some reason (boog out for the MIA series).

he is a marquee talent, but he's not been used to call a game as far as i know.

also, zach davies looks like a kid in pajamas in those dark blue "wrigleyville" uniforms.

tonight's game (thursday) is free game, btw.

The Cubs have optioned RHP Robert Stock back to AAA Iowa, and recalled LHP Brad Wieck.

The Cubs have purchased the contract of RHSP Mike Hauschild (ex-TOR) from Lexington (Atlantic League) and he has been asigned to AAA Iowa.

The Cubs are clearly beating the bushes of indepenent league baseball. Hauschild is the sixth player acquired by the Cubs from independent league teams in the last month (Jose Almonte, Tyler Ladendorf, Tim Susnara, Matt Warkentin, and Jarod Wright are the other five).

    (c) hendricks gives up at least 60 homers in the regular season

seriously, though...wisdom has "slowed down" the past 10 days or so, but he still managed a couple homers.  he's got a damn good shot at 20+ even if bote+duffy come back to steal a little time from him.

This Mets series is going poorly, so... off-topic question. Which of these outcomes do you currently think is more likely in 2021: (a) Javy hits at least 40 homeruns in the regular season, (b) Patrick Wisdom hits at least 20 homeruns in the regular season.

  • crunch 2 days 3 hours ago (view)

wow...and he's done for the night.  that's not good...well, for mets fans.

    "right shoulder soreness"

  • crunch 2 days 4 hours ago (view)

meanwhile...degrom with 8 Ks through 3 perfect innings.  he's also got a RBI single.

  • crunch 2 days 4 hours ago (view)

    and d.smith gets HBP.

this is high end next level strategy.  you beat degrom by injuring everyone until they have to forfeit the game.  moneyballs.

ow...villar got nailed in the ear and the back of the head by a throw from lobaton on a stolen base.

    CHARLIE: You are absolutely right.

Granted there are existing rules prohibiting pitchers from using foreign substances, but you don't change enforcement protocols suddenly in the middle of the season. Pitchers should be given an opportunity to make adjustments during the course of Spring Training before any new enforcement policy is implememted.

This can and should be addressed in the upcoming CBA negotiations. Not now.

  • Charlie 2 days 6 hours ago (view)

That was definitely my position prior to this year. But I am starting to buy into the claim that almost all pitchers are using something, even if it is rosin and sunscreen in many cases.
