Weekend funnies: At least there's a Cardinal or Brewer loss every game...

What's a Cub Fan to do?

It's the St. Louis Cardinals vs the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2011 National League Championship Series.
Seems like this painful display has been going on for weeks, and what's worse is the games have been pretty good.
Why do we hate St. Louis so much?
Because they're always good.
At baseball.
Milwaukee?
Well, they'll probably lose Prince, but they look kinda loaded for years to come.

At least each time they play in this series, one of 'em loses.
And they've been doing a good job of alternating those losses.
But suddenly it's getting to the end, and I've recently come to the revolting realization that the NEXT THING is about to happen.
Like, if the Brewers lose on Sunday, that means the freaking Cardinals get to go play in the World Series.
Or if the Cards lose the next two games, then it'll be the Brewers...

In the often helpful words of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, "Dogs licked my heart."

Well, at least we have Theo Epstein, right?
And if you're in Chicago, there's always Jake's Pub over at Clark and Oakdale.
Just waiting with it's awesome beer selection and fabulous pool table.
I might just have to go see how straight his sticks are.

theo's worth 10 prince fielders. we got theo...the best hitting coach in the world...and maybe a new manager. all that's keeping the club from being #1 is a minor detail of 1st, RF, 3rd, and a SP or two...minor details. maybe a new pitching coach rather than all of that mess...or a new president in charge of promotional napkins. cubs baseball...another off-season...another name brand suit. lou still needs a job for 4-6 months or until he gets bored with making awesomeness happen.

1- sign theo for 5 years 2- backload contract 3- trade to ARZ after 4 years for goldschmidt 4- pay goldschmidt $160m for 8 years 5- replace GM with the actress that played B.Beane's daughter in the Moneyball movie 6- win 5th world series in a row

lol I see Crunch hasn't changed anyway

no doubt. i dont mind the theo move...i'm just ready to get to the real offseason need, players. i'm staying out of the compensation thing until i know who's actually being given up...if anyone. meh. also, wow...the shine wore off rudy really quickly...almost easy to forget he was supposed to be one the coach/saviors. hell, you barely hear his name mentioned.

Not to mention guys have to go back to AAA to get their swings fixed after spending a month in the Bigs.

lulz... nolan ryan on cell phone texting someone...gw bush (the younger bush president) looking over his shoulder reading it. laura bush actually watching the game.

Milwaukee? I actually used to like Milwaukee. Most of my dislike comes from the belief that Braun (despite what he's done for my fantasy team) is an enormous douchebag. I've got no problem with anyone else. I'm rooting for them over the Cards, easily...then the AL against them in the WS, or course.

the Sept. 98 CHC/MIL games were electric...2 home games in particular were high scoring and the fans were way into it.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/C... sept 12 - 5 runs in the bottom 9th to win 12-15 http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/C... sept 13 - 1 run in the bottom 10th to win 10-11 http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/M... sept 23 - 3 runs in the bottom 9th to lose @MIL 7-8 cubs won on the 22, too, but it wasn't anything special. 4 games vs. MIL in Sept. 98...3 of them awesome.

You ought to be banned for bringing up the Brant Brown game...

OH NOOO!

the road to awesomeness is paved with the cries of elderly men.

Bronze medal game rained out, USA will share with Canada Blue Jays C Travis D'Arnaud tore ligaments in his thumb during the tournament.

f'n socialist baseball tourney... *shakes fist at obama*

Josh Byrnes is coming with Theo if and when the deal gets done.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Byrnes wikipedia and all, but fun stuff about owner signing Eric Byrnes against Josh's wishes.

That's fine, Theo needs at least one or two guys who know the system he's going to implement. I wonder how many old school types there are in the Cubs front office.

TEX is on the field celebrating with...soda. it's not even a promotion tie-in because they took the labels off the soda. that's so damn misguided wholesome...corrosive sugar water #1. actually, it just looks really weird.

jim leyland crying...again. i'd hate to see him watch Lifetime movies...it'd be a huge mess.

If I recall correctly from last years run, they avoid alcohol in order to include Josh Hamilton in team celebrations.

Wilson doesn't partake as well being straigtedge and all

Don't they have any diabetics on the team? Corrosive sugar water is almost as bad for society as alcohol. Bunch of party poppers on that Texas team, it's going to make it hard to root for them. Ron Washington ruined the traditional ALCS coke binge party for everyone too. Blah, how many days till spring training?

Ron Washington ruined the traditional ALCS coke binge party for everyone too. --- I think that's why they took the labels off the pop bottles, so Washington wouldn't be seen doing Coke in public.

keep forgetting about that (and cj)...it ended up cute anyway with the family members and kids joining in toward the end.

What was the stated purpose of the 1953 Bonus Rule?

COMMISSIONER FORD FRICK: "We want the kind of bonus rule that will discourage the Majors from paying out big bonuses, and encourage the little fellows (he is referring here to the minor leagues) to sign these youngsters and then sell them to clubs of a higher classification."

still waiting for rich hill to happen over here...i promise to be totally not impressed or happy about it.  not a tj guy, but he's injured as hell and not expected to show up until mid-season at best.

whoever they pick to give a few million dollars over a couple seasons to not pitch for the cubs in any of them, i welcome them.

on a serious tip, there are rumors of a minor league deal for b.morrow.

So who is left in the free Agent market that has had Tommy John surgery?  That seems to be a Prerequisite for Theo.  Cotton and Winkler both did adding to all the other signings of Theo.  I would love to see how many people Theo has signed or drafted who has had TJS.

I hope "isn't happening" was more like, "we'd love to continue to discuss this soon"--after extensions/trades of younger players are a bit more sorted.

If only they had revenue from having recently won the World Series and a string of playoff appearances along with a new TV contract! Then they could really spend.

i wish this team was owned by billionaires rather than these...oh, nevermind.

Apparently Cubs were approached by Rizzo's agent about an extension. They told him it wasn't happening.

Cubs organization is performing a master class in how to burn good will among fans!

jdlym: The contract Brad Brach signed with the Mets includes a $850K base salary for 2020, a $1.25M club option for 2021, $400K in potential performance bonuses in 2020, potentially $2.25M in 2021 salary accelerators, and $500K in potential performance bonuses in 2021, so ordinarily the Cubs salary obligation to Brach would be the difference between Brach's new 2020 base salary ($850K) and what would have been his 2020 player option salary ($1.35M) if he hadn't been released by the Cubs.

Hey AZPhil, when a player is released with money/years still remaining on his contract, does his next team *have* to give him the prorated major league minimum or can they offer more (meaning the original club owes less) to "outbid" other teams that may have had interest? I'm assuming that's what happened with Brad Brach, where the Mets signed him for 2020 at $850,000.
