Wesneski Spins Tune-Up at Cubs Backfields

Left behind in Mesa after their teammates flew home to Chicago, Cubs RHSP Hayden Wesneski hurled five innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts and catcher Luis Torrens singled, doubled and scored, and lofted a sacrifice fly, helping the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs' Lo-A affiliate) take a 3-1 lead, but Jean Walters belted an RBI triple and scored on a passed ball in the top of the 9th, as the Hillsboro Hops (Hi-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) rallied to edge the Pelicans 4-3 on Field #6, and Anderdson Rojas drilled a bases-loaded triple and an RBI single, Franyel Baez ripped a two-run single, and SP Brock Jones hurled three innings of one-run ball, as the Visalia Rawhide (Lo-A affiliate of the Diamondbacks) took advantage of 14 walks, three errors, two balks, a HBP, and two WP, and drubbed the Mesa Cubs (Extended Spring Training squad) 16-1 on Field #5, in Cactus League minor league game action Tuesday morning at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Myrtle Beach LF Jacob Wetzel left the game on Field #6 after being hit on the left hand with a pitch.

Because the Tennessee Smokies were playing as the Chicago Cubs against the White Sox in the MLB Cactus League game at Sloan Park, the South Bend Cubs (Hi-A affiliate of the Cubs) replaced the Smokies in the AA game versus the Amarillo Sod Poodles (AA affiliate of the Diamondbacks) at Salt River Fields, which further necessitated Myrtle Beach to play a Hi-A opponent (Hillsboro) and the Mesa Cubs (Extended Spring Training group) to play in the Lo-A game versus Visalia.

AZ Phil, do you think Jefferson Rojas will have a chance to be the primary SS for the ACL Cubs this year? He played more 2B in the DSL last year. Curious if you think he can handle SS.

Hi Phil, is anything going on this weekend on the backfields?  Also, when does Ext. Spring Training start?  Looking forward to watching.  Thanks!

matt williams (ex-3rd baseman, current SD 3rd base coach) has been diagnosed with colon cancer and will leave the club for treatment on friday (day after opening day).

supposedly it's localized (probably a stage 2 or less if that's the case) and he's expected to be okay after removal.  they never know for sure until they biopsy some lymph nodes and tissue near the removal site, but it sounds like he got it early (or early-ish).

“For me, I like this better. It's a better organization.” - Willson Contreras

ouch.  i mean, i understand...but, ouch.  contreras will be wearing custom made (by his direction) molina cleats for opening day.  we lost a class act to free agency.

oh, i totally get it.  contreras wanted to stay and quite honestly, his price was reasonable for a veteran with his skills.  STL is also a much better quality organization right now.  i mean, look at that lineup.  they have goldschmidt + arenado signed and a slew of kids supporting everyone.

i was hoping the guy would get to stay on long enough to get a chance to be a cubs legend.

watching a spring of tucker barnhart do his paul bako impersonation didn't help.

crunch -- Hey, I'll have you know that Paul Bako had a nine-game stretch in April 2003 where he batted .318/.385/.409 with 7 RBI.  The Cubs don't win the division without that 9-7 win against Cinci on April 5 where he drove in those 6 runs going 4 for 5 with a triple.  A win in April counts as much as a win in September, baby!  (Insert facetious emoticon)

Mervis and Wesneski getting promoted aaccording to Tommy Birch from Des Moines Register.

    So Happ to the IL

    Maybe Hendricks to IL ????

    Mervis/Cooper are DH platoon

    Wisdom, Canario, Tauchman share LF/RF

I wonder if Busch has ever played LF?

    I don't believe he has

“I respect his track record of what he’s accomplished,” Counsell said on Sunday morning. “And you go through these. He’s gone through -- maybe not this particular stretch -- but stretches where you’re not pitching the way you want to and struggling. And you figure it out.” -- Counsell on Hendricks

    fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

i respect his track record of no longer being in the rotation.  in 2016 he threw 2 innings out of the pen, his only work out of the pen.  the cubs won the world series that year.  let's repeat that magic.  the formula is obvious.  stats don't lie.  etc etc whatever...

small sample size and all, but how about this craziness...

"Entering Sunday, Hendricks had allowed an .843 OPS against hitters in their initial plate appearance, followed by a 1.056 OPS in a second meeting and a 2.449 OPS when seeing batters for a third time."

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?
