Who'll Stop the Raino?

Raino Coran belted an RBI double and scored in the first, singled, stole second, and scored a run in the third, and walked, stole another base, and scored another run in the eighth, Rafael Morel drilled a two-run single in the first, walked in the sixth, and walked and scored in the eighth, and Pedro Ramirez singled twice and knocked-in a run for the "Blue" squad, but Ronnier Quintero laced a two-out two run single in the bottom of the fifth for the "Red" squad that broke a 4-4 tie, as the Cubs "Red" squad rallied to defeat the Cubs "Blue" squad 8-6 in Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action Thursday night on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ. 

The game was pre-planned as an eight-inning contest.

Phil,

You made a great point the other day about the Cubs main priority this offseason needing to be protecting most of this 2022 Rule 5 group (because it's actually 2021 and 22 groups toegther)together. Which makes perfect sense. Tons of potential there.

But that got me thinking about what the 2023 Rule 5 group looks like as of today. Just wanting to look forward because if Jed does protect as many as 14 guys this offseason, the 40man gets pretty locked up for a while.

Who would be the "noticeable" names up for 2023 Rule 5?

childersb3: In terms of players in contention for a spot on the 40 post-2023, LHP D. J. Herz, INF Kevin Made,  INF Reggie Preciado, RHP Max Bain, and RHP Porter Hodge are the most-notable ones at this time. Of course there are many others. 

Then there are college players who signed in 2020, either after being selected in the shortened 2020 MLB First Year Player Draft, or who signed as a Non-Drafted Free Agent (NDFA) after the draft.   

Because the 2020 minor league season was cancelled, it's - POSSIBLE - that the 2020 season will not count as a "first qualified season" for Rule 5 Draft eligibility purposes, meaning players who signed in 2020 - MIGHT - have their Rule 5 Draft eligibility delayed by a year. (TBD) 

By rule, a player's "first qualified season" for Rule 5 Draft-elibility purposes is determined by the age of the player on the June 5th prior to signing his first contract, the date the player officially signs his first contract, and whether that date is before of after the conclusion of the minor league regular season of the minor league team to which the player was first assigned. 

For example, in 2015 the Cubs delayed "officially" signing their top nine 2015-16 16-year old ISP prospects -- SS Aramis Ademan, INF Luis Diaz, RHP Hector Matos, INF Christopher Morel, LHP Brailyn Marquez, C Henderson Perez, RHP Yunior Perez, INF Yonathan Perlaza, and OF Jonathan Sierra -- until August 23, the day - AFTER - the conclusion of the DSL regular season. This bought the Cubs an extra year before these players would be Rule 5 Draft-eligible. Because minor League regular seasons can end on different dates depending on the league (and  the end date can change from one year to the next), to determine Rule 5 Draft eligibility, you need to know the exact date that a minor league team's regular season ended that year. 

The problem with the 2020 season is that the minor league season was CANCELLED. So what will be the process for determining the "first qualified sesaon" for Rule 5 Draft eligibility purposes for players who signed in 2020?

One way they could do it would be to use the date MLB - OFFICIALLY - canceled the 2020 minor league season --- June 30, 2020 -- to determine when the minor league season ended, so that any player signed up through June 30, 2020, would accrue a qualified season toward Rule 5 Draft eligibility, but players signed after June 30th would not.

Of course there actually was no minor league season in 2020 even before it was officially cancelled, so another way they could do it would be to say for players signing their first contract in 2020, the entire season doesn't count as a "first qualified season" toward Rule 5 Draft eligibility, no matter when the player signed in 2020.

Or they could say the ENTIRE 2020 season DOES count as far as the "first qualified season" for Rule 5 Draft eligibility purposes for any player who signed in 2020, both before and after the MLB officially cancelled the minor league season on June 30th.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.
