Casey Kelly Sharp at Salt River Fields

Jose Gonzalez (RBI single), Jemile Weeks (two-run double), and Elliot Soto (RBI single) stroked consecutive two-out run-scoring hits to cap a five-run 5th, Christopher Morel belted a two-run HR in the 6th, Kevin Cornelius and Kevin Zamudio drilled RBI doubles in the 7th, and SP Casey Kelly fired four innings of shutout ball, leading the Cubs to a 9-2 victory over the Rockies in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Saturday morning on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Jemile Weeks (on AAA Iowa 7-day DL - February 2017 sprained knee) and Elliot Soto (on Iowa 7-day DL - March 2017 foot injury) continued their rehab in the game, with Weeks going 2-4 with the two-run double mentioned above, a single, and a walk, and Soto going 2-4 with two singles. Weeks was at SS amd Soto was at 2B for the first five innings, and then the pair switched positions with each other for the final four innings. Both appear to be ready to return to the I-Cubs

Veteran MLB RHRP Fernando Rodriguez (on Iowa 7- day DL - September 2016 lat surgery) threw "live" BP (one inning - 25 pitches) on Field #1 at Riverview Park earlier in the day and it appeared to go very well, so he could be close to seeing some action in Cactus League EXST games. He also would be a good candidate to get called up to Chicago at some point later in the season (presuming he completes his rehab without any setbacks and pitches OK at Iowa).

In EXST Cubs roster news, OF John Andreoli (hamstring strain) has completed his rehab and has returned to AAA Iowa. Andreoli went 0-15 with ten strikeouts in three Cactus League EXST games

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

AZ Phil, a roster rules question for you. I feel like I remember situations in the past where a player has been DFA'd but then a roster spot opens up and he gets re-added to the roster. If the Cubs place Brett Anderson on the DL, can they place Szczur right back on the roster or does he have to clear waivers first?

BRADSBEARD: The scenario you describe (player is Designated for Assignment and then is subsequently returned to the 40-man roster) would sometimes happen when a player was Designated for Assignment for the purpose of clearing a slot on a club's MLB 25-man roster for another player but the designated player's slot on the MLB 40-man roster was not filled. This would apply - ONLY - to players who had minor league options left but who could not be optioned to the minors without first securing Optional Assignment Waivers (which would take two days to secure). But Optional Assignment waivers were eliminated in the new CBA, so you won't see that scenario happen anymore, and even if Optional Assignment Waivers still existed it wouldn't have appled to Szczur because he is out of minor league options (although it would have applied to -- let's say -- Justin Grimm).

Also, the DFA period used to be ten days but in the new CBA it was reduced to seven, so the Cubs will have only seven days to either trade Szczur, outright him to the minors, or release him, and actually they only have five days to decide what to do because it takes two days to run a player through Outright Assignment Waivers and a player cannot be traded while he is on waivers. So if the Cubs do not trade Szczur within five days (by Thursday), they would either have to place him on Outright Assignment Waivers on Thursday (and then they couldn't trade him), or if they don't place him on Outright Assignment Waivers by Thursday, they would have until Saturday to either trade him or release him (but they could not outright him), and if that happens, the other 29 clubs would know that Szczur was not placed on Outright Assignment Waivers on Thursday and that therefore the Cubs would HAVE to either trade him by Saturday or release him, and I doubt very much that the Cubs would put themselves in that position.

So the bottom line is, Szczur is effectively a goner. It's just a question of whether he gets traded, or else claimed off waivers if the Cubs can't find a decent enough return in a trade by Thursday. My guess would be that Szczur will be traded for a PTBNL (or cash) no later than Thursday, and it could very well end up being cash, but more cash than the waiver price (possibly something closer to the Rule 5 Draft price of $100K). And if the Cubs were to eventually receive (let's say) $100K for Szczur, that money could be used to claim as many as five players off waivers at a later point in time (over a period of years even).

Or depending on the degree of interest in Szczur from other clubs, the Cubs could possibly trade Szczur to a club that has a 2017 Competitive Balance Draft pick between the first & second round or between the second & third round in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft . (These draft picks can only be traded during the MLB regular season). But again, that would depend on how much interest there is in Szczur.

BRADSBEARD: There's no way to know for sure (right now), but I think Matt Szczur would get claimed off waivers if he isn't traded. Unlike Leonys Martin, Szczur is still pre-arbitration (although he is "on the bubble" to be a "Super Two" post-2017), he is a high-character guy (he is associated with the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation), he has a World Series ring (even though he didn't actually play in the World Series), and he is apparently OK with being a back-up 4th OF/PH.

Ex-MLB INF Chris Valaika has joined the Cubs Extended Spring Training coaching staff.

Valaika attended college at UCSB in the 2015-16 school year (finishing his degree) and also served as an assistant coach with the Gauchos baseball team, and he was suppoed to join the Cubs coaching staff at Extended Spring training last year, but then UCSB got into the College World Series and he never made it to Mesa.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.

Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous.

As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.
