Whoa...What a game! Everyone got in on the attack, including Schwarber, who only went 4-5 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. More important was Tsuyoshi “I’m a badass” Wada, who might have turned things around with a strong performance and his first win of the season. It was the largest shutout in an interleague game--ever. Moving on...

Hammel gave up 2 ER in 5 innings (and 103 pitches) in a no decision against CIN in his last appearance. The Cubs went on to lose 5-4. It was his shortest outing of the season--tied with the 5 innings he pitched against PIT on April 22. Against Hammel, Bourne is 4-17, Moss is 3-7, and Kipnis is 1-3 with a HR.

Salazar lost in Detroit his last time out, giving up 3 ER over 7. Only Fowler (1-4, 2 Ks) has faced him.

Bryant extended his hitting streak to 13 games last night, including his 9th inning GS off of David Murphy, who was trotted out as the 9th CLE pitcher. (He and Rayburn shared the 9th, which crunch anticipated in the 3rd inning.) Bryant is now in the top 15 in RBIs in the NL (tied with Rizzo at 39). And Rizzo (2-4, HR) ended his 0-17 skid.

Another offensive performance like that, and I might start rethinking my position on this DH “experiment.” (Fat chance.)

Go Cubs!

Put Soler in there and this line up is looking like one we will hopefully see for awhile.

Slumping Kennys Vargas hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 victory and a two-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals.
HR off Carlos Villaneuva, you can take the player off the Cubs but you can't take the Cubs off the player (or... so it used to be). Time to cool off the Twinkies at home, starting tomorrow.

I know Soler came up and basically did the same thing. Pitchers adjust etc. but SHIT how do you send this kid back down after this? I'm not saying he should stay up but dang. Dang a lang

That guy who caught Schwarbers hr better get a blumpkin from his girlfriend ....or Schwarber.

Gotta say it was painful to see Ross bat for Coghlan and Baxter for Denorfia back to back. Ouch. Advantage Francona.

I'm really tired of 13 man pitching staffs. The trade-off for an extra arm is a catcher and infielder who can't hit (unless Ross starts). Grimm and Medina have an option year remaining so if you're over-taxed one of them can be optioned for a fresh arm. But honestly, Ramirez is coming back (probably) this weekend. A combination of Rondon, Strop, Grimm, Ramirez, J. Russell, Motte, and Wood ought to be able to throw 6 innings every two days. Until they call up Schwarber for good, my bench would have Ross, Alcantara, LaStella (replaces Herrera when off DL), Denorfia, and Coghlan.

Am I missing something? 8th inning, 2 men on and only one out after Castro gets hit in the forearm. Maddon rarely gets criticized but I think he just outthought himself. Pinch hits Ross for Coughlan (vs Rzcpzinski/Scrabble) then uses Baxter for Denorfia (vs Shaw). Wouldn't he have been better off with Coughlan/Denorfia than Ross/Baxter even if the pitching changes were not favorable Left vs Right? It's about the only time this year that I didn't agree with JM, so in that sense he's been awesome. But still, I'm just saying'... (like Carlito said)

he played it wrong... you sub in d.ross, send j.lester to the ondeck circle, ross gets walked, send baxter to the plate rather than lester to score ross from 1st on a single...cubs tie...cubs eventually take the lead on a castro HR in extras...d.ross moves from C to P for the save...everyone goes back to the hotel dressed like flapper girls from the 1920s. it's easy if you apply the physics of moneyballs.

Late to the comment stream but I was watching on my phone and when Baxter came up I turned off the game. That was the strangest piece of managing I've seen in a very, very long time. Take two credible bats out of the lineup in a close game - all their games are close, pretty much. And who he replaced them with ... mystifying at best. Coghlan is a platoon player but I wouldn't pinch hit David Ross for anybody not named Lester, and that won't happen because Lester and he are joined at the hip. Then, the great one defends the Baxter move afterwards, citing Baxter's pinch hitting past. Terrible bench, terrible use of said bench. But I like Maddon, too, so the hell with it.

I had less of a problem with Ross batting, even though he sucks, but it's interesting that both he and Coghlan were like 2-14 against LHPs this year. I didn't understand Denorfia not batting there, though. Denorfia has been ripping RHPs so far. It's a good lesson in that every manager makes moves that are head-scratchers.

Tis true. It's almost like he was over managing. Just let your guys play the game. Not the end of the world, I like his managing and all, but I couldn't help but feel that he was in an invasion of the body snatchers movie and the cubreporter tweet in the twitbox was because something like that really happened.

ArizonaPhil - Does Schwarber have to be on the 25 man roster as of August 31 in order to be eligible for the playoffs (if the Cubs make the playoffs?)

DAVID P: No.

As was discussed here a few days ago, this rule was changed last year.

Under the old rule, only players who were on a club's MLB 25-man roster or 7-day (concussion), 15-day, or 60-day DL as of midnight August 31st were eligible to play in the post-season. However, players on the DL on 8/31 could be "replaced" on a post-season roster by a player in the club's organization who otherwise would have been ineligible for post-season play (like players on the 40-man roster who were on Optional Assignment to the minors on 8/31, or any player in the club's minor league system on 8/31), so contending clubs would try to make sure that it had at least one (or more) players on the DL on 8/31. This is how and why the Angels were able to place rookie RHRP Francisco Rodriguez on its post-season rosters (LDS, LCS, and World Series) in 2005, even though Rodriguez was not on the Angels MLB 25-man roster or DL on 8/31.

However, beginning last year, any player who is on a club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) prior to midnight (Eastern) on August 31st is eligible to be included on a post-season Active List (25-man roster), including players who are on the 7-day (concussion), 15-day, or 60-day DL, Bereavement List, Paternity Leave List, or Restricted List (Prohibited Substance Suspension or extended Bereavement Leave only), or on Optional Assignment to the minors on August 31st.

So because he will be on the Cubs MLB Reserve List (40-man roster), Kyle Schwarber will automatically be eligible to be placed on a Cubs post-season 25-man active roster (LDS, LCS, and or World Series) even if he is not recalled from the minors prior to September 1st, like (for example) if the Cubs want to use him as a DH in the World Series. The Cubs do NOT need to recall him prior to September 1st to make him eligible for the post-season. He just needs to be on the 40-man roster (or on the 60-day DL, or on the Restricted List for the two reasons I mentioned).

NOTE: A player on an MLB club's Disabled List (7-day, 15-day, or 60-day) or Restricted List (Prohibited Substance Suspension or extended Bereavement Leave only) on August 31st is eligible to be included on a post-season Active List only after spending the minimum number of days required to be served by a player on that list, so (for example) if a player is placed on the 60-day DL on 8/15, he would not be eligible to be reinstated and be placed on a post-season active list until AFTER spending at least 60 days on the DL, and even then he would be eligible only for a post-season series that starts on or after the date he is reinstated.

Remember, there is no one single "post-season 25-man roster." Choosing from among its post-season eligible players (including players who were on Optional Assignment on 8/31), a club's post-season Active List (25-man roster) can be reset (tweaked/altered) prior to each series (LDS, LCS, and World Series), so a club might opt to activate an extra LHRP for a particular series because of anticipated match-ups with a particular opponent, or might exchange a RH bat for a LH bat or exchange a RH starting pitcher for a LH one, or an N. L. club might choose to add a more-useful DH for the World Series (like Schwarber) than any of the players who were on the club's LDS or LCS post-season rosters.

Also, a post-season eligible player who is injured or leaves his club on Bereavement Leave or Paternity Leave prior to the start of a post-season series can (with the approval of the MLB Commissioner) be replaced on his club's LDS, LCS, or World Series Active List by a player who was on a Reserve List or Inactive List of a minor league affiliate from that organization prior to midnight August 31st (that is, a player who was in the organization on 8/31, but was NOT on the MLB 40-man roster, 60-day DL, or Restricted List). This is the only part of the new rule that allows a player was not on the club's MLB 40-man roster or DL to be placed on a post-season Active List prior to the start of a series. However, the minor league player must be added to his club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) before he can be added to the club's 25-man Active Roster (just like during the MLB regular season).

A player on a post-season Active List (25-man roster) who is injured or leaves his club on Bereavement Leave or Paternity Leave during a post-season series can (with the approval of the MLB Commissioner) be replaced on his club's Active List prior to the conclusion of that series by another post-season eligible player, or by a player who was on a Reserve List or Inactive List of a minor league affiliate from that organization prior to midnight August 31st. Again, the minor league player must be added to his club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) before he can be added to the club's 25-man Active Roster. This would be used if (for example) the club's back-up catcher or a LHRP was injured during a series and there were no other catchers or LHRP left on the club's post-season eligible list. Also, if a pitcher or position player is replaced during a post-season series, a pitcher must replace a pitcher and a position player must replace a position player (but this restriction ONLY applies to players who are replaced DURING a post-season series), and the replaced pitcher or position player is ineligible to be reinstated to his club's Active List (25-man roster) for the balance of that series and the next series (LCS or World Series).

Trib/Mark Gonzales article this am... on the state of Cubs minor league catching. Interviewed catching coordinator tim Cossins...
“We’re in a good spot now,” said Tim Cossins, the Cubs’ field and catching coordinator. “The guys are catching well. They’re putting in the innings and the games, and that’s the important thing.” The promotion of Schwarber to the Cubs on Tuesday before a stint at Triple-A Iowa will give more time to Willson Contreras at Double-A Tennessee. Contreras, 23, has turned a corner in his seventh professional season with a .328 batting average and 34 RBIs in addition to applying his defensive skills behind the plate after spending his first three seasons as a third baseman. “The talent has been there since day one,” Cos-sins said. “He was one of the guys I heard about before coming over (from the Marlins organization in 2013). He is a guy who’s really tooled up but in the converting stages and very raw. We’re at a point now where he has contained all his abilities and put it in a nice package and is starting to think the game. “With all the physical stuff he has been able to improve on and get deeper into what the position is, he has been unbelievable.”

Cossins, part 2:
Victor Caratini and Ben Carhart, each of whom are former infielders now at high Class A Myrtle Beach, also have made progress behind the plate, Cossins said. Caratini, 21, started his career as a third base man in the Braves organization before joining the Cubs last July in the Emilio Bonifacio-James Russell trade. “(Caratini) has learned to play the position every single day and he’s taking a huge leap forward with his throwing, which is good to see,” Cossins said. “He does a good job controlling the game and with pitch selection. I’m excited where he’s at.’’ Caratini hasn’t been charged with a passed ball in 44 games behind the plate and has thrown out 14 would-be base stealers in 54 attempts. Cael Brockmeyer and Gioskar Amaya, who spent five seasons as an infielder, have shown promise at Class A South Bend. “(Amaya) is committed 100 percent to the position,” Cossins said. “And he’s young (22), which is great. It was the right time to make the move.”
