Comments

RHRP Joe Nathan (April 2015 TJS) is presently on an Article XIX-C minor league rehab assignment at AA Tennessee, and the 30-day rehab assignment expires on 7/23 and he is eligible to be reinstated from the MLB 60-day DL a week earlier on 7/16.

Given the contract he signed (a major league deal with incentives and a club option for 2017), and barring a medical setback, he will almost certainly be joining the Cubs bullpen sometime between 7/16 - 7/23. So the Cubs will have about a week or two before the trade deadline to try and determine if Nathan has value as a bullpen arm.

The Cubs have signed 22 of their 2016 MLB Rule 4 Draft (First-Year Player Draft) picks so far.

Players selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft (MLB Rule 4 Draft) are placed on a club's Negotiation List.

In most cases, a player selected by a club in the Rule 4 Draft will remain on the club's Negotiation List until either the player signs or until 5:00 PM (EDT) on the Friday that falls during the week July 12-18 (whichever comes first), and if a club does not sign a Rule 4 Draft pick by the deadline, the player is removed from the club's Negotiation List and becomes eligible for selection again in the next Rule 4 Draft in which the player would be eligible for selection. The exception to this rule is any college senior with no baseball eligibility left. This class of player remains on the club's Negotiation List until the player signs or until one week prior to the next Rule 4 Draft (whichever comes first).

Also, any player eligible for selection in the Rule 4 Draft who is not drafted ("Non-Drafted Free-Agent" or "NDFA") can sign with any club after the conclusion of the draft any time up until one week prior to the next Rule 4 Draft, unless and until the NDFA enrolls in a junior college or four-year college, in which case MLB Rule 4 Draft eligibility rules apply.

A player selected in the MLB Rule 4 Draft or a Rule 4 eligible NDFA cannot be signed to a Major League contract.

A player selected in the MLB Rule 4 Draft or a Rule 4 eligible NDFA can be "Signed for Future Service" (contract is for the following season) if the player signs a contract after July 1st.

A club is not permitted to select a player in the Rule 4 Draft two years in a row, unless the player gives his approval in advance.

sweet...was hoping some of those late guys were ID'd as guys not wanting to do the school thing. surprised he's not gonna at least do the junior college thing. that would be a hardcore steal. a low 90s FB that Arizona wanted in their program. also, wow, looking at his HS GPA, he's -really- not a school guy. 2.35 GPA...that's solid "C-student" material.

"Rangers acquired LHP Eric Jokisch from the Marlins in exchange for INF Pedro Ciriaco." that's not even shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic...that's shuffling buckets of water on the Titanic.

Tommy Birch ‏@TommyBirch Hearing that another showing of the Munenori Kawasaki show could be taking place in the near future in Chicago. #Cubs --- So I guess we've got that going for us.

That turned to shit real quick. Rizzo did everything wrong on that bouncer/error. Should have left it for Zobrist and way to hard a throw to handle for Wood...he had a bit more time.

After the impending sweep, they will still be leading the Division but they have real serious issues. It is a bad baseball team any way you cut it right now. Theo is just fucking waiting and waiting, while this team implodes. There is no guarantees on what they will be doing after the break, either. It is a complete disaster.

the trend of no starter for iowa knowing how to pitch well enough to even be a MLB backup option continues. it's been really bad there for quite a while. p.johnson lasted 2.2 innings of really wild pitching (2.2ip 5h 5bb 3k, 1wp 1hbp, 5 r/er) and c.black wrecked his ERA in relief giving up 6 runs in 1.2ip meanwhile, t.federowicz got tested on the basepaths and failed spectacularly with 4 SB vs 1 CS working with 2 different pitchers (johnson/mejia). it'll be interesting to see if he'll be tested by other teams going forward and how much of the blame is shouldered by him. before tonight he had caught 3 other games since his return with only 1 steal attempt (successful)...he was 4-1 sb/cs before the callup. that said, his hot hitting continued with 3 singles on a 3-4 night at the plate.

In "The Great Collapse of 2016", the role of Jake Arrieta will be played by Bryan Lahair. "They can't hit, pitch or field, but they do have a cool party room!"

Everybody makes a big deal of Arrieta, Lester, Lackey and Hammel are as starters, yet the forgotten one Kyle Hendricks has the best ERA of the 5 at 2.55

Fowler went 0-2 with 2 walks for South Bend. Batted 9th as DH. Something to do with getting there late due to traffic (according to Wittenmeyer). You would think they could have planned ahead better to have him lead off and maybe get another at bat. Was fun to start the year without much Cubbery but now summer Cubbery is back in full bloom.

CUBSTER: Apparently the delay happened because the Cubs hired Edwin Jackson to drive Fowler to the ballpark, but EJax went to Kane County instead of to South Bend.

25 games played with a -85 run differential.  insane.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Oh my, now I will have nightmares of me sitting in the bowels of the Wrigley security detention cell.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.
