Rangers @ Cubs: Perez vs Hendricks (Game 89)

Back in the saddle again.TEX (54-36): LHP Martin Perez (7-5, 3.85)
CHC (53-35): RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 2.55)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Hendricks, the de facto ace of the staff, gets the important first-after-the-Break nod. The Rangers draftee last appeared on July 7th in two innings of relief of Hammel in a pathetic 4-3 loss to the Braves. Hendricks had won against the Reds on the 4th (5.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 K, 1 BB). In his last four appearances, he’s 3-0 with a 1.08. Only Desmond (2-5, HR) and the DL’d Stubbs (1-0) have faced him.

Perez got knocked around and took the loss in Boston last Wednesday (4 IP, 7 ER, 1 K, 2 BB). He went 4-0 with a 4.15 in June and is 1-4 with a 5.23 so far this season on the road. Only Zobrist (1-5) and Fowler (0-3) have seen him.

The Rangers, like the Cubs, had a bit of a pre-All Star Game skid, going 3-9 over the last two weeks. Pitching has been a problem for both. The Rangers combined ERA is 9.21, and the ERA for the Cub starters is 8.81. Both teams will be looking to get back to their winnings ways.

The Cubs last played the Rangers in 2013, when the Cubs took the series at Wrigley. Since interleague started the teams have split the twelve games.

Speaking of history, we were so busy losing and drinking that we blew past the TCR 15th anniversary last month without notice. The typical gift is crystal, but nuts to that. We all know what we want, so let's make that happen.

In any event, thanks for making us part of your Cubs experience--and for making the site what it is. You are the wind blowing out to our bleachers.

Darvish (2-0, 2.87) versus Hammel (7-5, 3.46) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs Dexter Fowler (hamstring) to be with team all weekend rehabbing some more then will be sent on another rehab.. ---- Glad we know he didn't have a "set back".

d.ross activated, kawa to AAA...cahill to DL (right patellar tendinitis...boo), c.richard activated. also, this awesome news... "Joel Peralta has elected to become a free agent."

This is the first All-Star break in a while I can remember not missing baseball much. Needed a break after that last few weeks. Dexter better get back soon, and I sure hope some pitching inside the system steps up for the bullpen--trades for relievers are crap.

Dempster's going to sing the stretch in his impersonation of Will Ferrell's impersonation of Harry Caray, isn't he...

Glad the Cubs won but Justin Grimm can't seem to get his curve ball down. All five of them in the 9th inning was at the top of the strike zone or higher. Doesn't bode well for him re-discovering his command -- those suckers will get belted.

What a satisfying win and great start to the second half. Game balls to Hendricks, Russell and Javy - and nice shut down inning from Carl Jr. - adios Peralta!

draft signing deadline tonight... trey cobb (12) and parker dunshee (14) are not expected to sign. overall, a rather trouble-free draft for all teams...everyone in rounds 1-10 got signed by all teams so far except supplemental 1st round pick nick lodolo (SD) who declined a $1.75m offer and 7th rounder tyler buffet (HOU) who's not expected to sign.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.
