Arrieta pitched (9 IP, 1 ER, 9 Ks), made some nice plays, hit a HR, and did everything but sell beer in the stands last Sunday against the White Sox. He’s won his last three starts. The Braves are 9-39 (.231) against him. A. J. “not on my @!!?& watch” Pierzynski is 6-8 with 2 HRs.

Miller got roughed up (5 IP, 5 ER) in Colorado in his outing last Friday. He’s otherwise pitched well but hasn’t won a game since May 17. The Cubs are 10-53 (.189) against him. Denorfia is 3-4, Soler is 2-4 with a HR.

Good news on the SP front: It looks like Hammel is going to make his start on Tuesday. And Cueto is pitching today, which means we’ll miss him in Cinci.

Go Cubs!

lester needs ross because he wont hold a runner...arrieta needs ross over schwarb because arrieta is one of the slowest to the plate in the bigs. then again...what advantage is lost in that setup when ross steps to the plate rather than schwab? schwarb is very incomplete behind the plate. MLB Network did a nice breakdown of his last game and his clunkiness behind the plate...wish i could find a link. they especially spent time pointing out him falling down on 1 knee a lot while receiving and how it both makes him off-balance and slows him down.

Cole Hamels line vs Marlins. 3.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R (all earned). 1 K, 0 BB. Relieved by DeFratus. Yikes. Call that untimely for the Phillies. Dan Haren has given up 5 ER in the same game. He a back of the rotation option for someone. Marmol for Haren.

Cafardo Sunday article from Boston Globe, Cub stuff:
In talking about former Red Sox teammate Manny Ramirez and how saddened he was that Ramirez would likely not join him in Cooperstown because of performance-enhancing drug violations, Pedro Martinez estimated that 60 percent of the players were on some PED when he played.
9. David Ross, C, Cubs — The word in Chicago is that Ross has been an unbelievable leader for a young team. This is a guy you can’t measure with WAR and OPS. His CQ (OK, it’s a made-up stat) — clubhouse quotient — is a maximum 100. He’s also still a very good catcher. According to MLB Network research, getting called strikes on pitches just beyond the edge of the zone, Ross is at 52 percent, which is fifth in baseball behind Buster Posey (56.1), Jason Castro (55.1), Yasmani Grandal (52.7), and Andrew Susac (52.1). The Red Sox have two catchers in the bottom five — Sandy Leon last at 30.7 percent and Blake Swihart at 34.3 percent.
2. The Cubs’ Kris Bryant doesn’t want to comment about how he started the season in the minors, pushing back his arbitration and free agency clock. He and his agent, Scott Boras, had plenty to say about it at the time. But now Bryant has demurred to, “I just think it’s one of those things that hopefully we can laugh about 20 years from now.” Bryant grew up a Red Sox fan because his father, Mike, grew up in Acton.

len/JD having technical difficulties...weird just hearing the sounds of the game. reminds me of some of the "back in the day" minor league internet feeds. -edit- doh, that was the ATL feed with that issue. still, was a neat few minutes.

soler power! straightaway CF...nice one.

Carson Sands had a game he'd like to forget (hope he has a short memory): 1st inning: Andrew Guillotte singles on a line drive to right fielder Kevonte Mitchell. Gunnar Heidt singles on a ground ball to right fielder Kevonte Mitchell. Andrew Guillotte to 2nd. Justin Atkinson singles on a line drive to right fielder Kevonte Mitchell. Andrew Guillotte to 3rd. Gunnar Heidt to 2nd. Lane Thomas hits a ground-rule double (10) on a line drive to right field. Andrew Guillotte scores. Gunnar Heidt scores. Justin Atkinson to 3rd. Sean Hurley singles on a line drive to center fielder Ian Happ. Justin Atkinson scores. Lane Thomas to 3rd. Ryan Hissey hit by pitch. Sean Hurley to 2nd. Carl Wise singles on a line drive to center fielder Ian Happ. Lane Thomas scores. Sean Hurley scores. Ryan Hissey to 3rd. Connor Panas strikes out swinging. JC Cardenas singles on a line drive to center fielder Ian Happ. Ryan Hissey scores. Carl Wise to 2nd. With Andrew Guillotte batting, wild pitch by Carson Sands, Carl Wise to 3rd. JC Cardenas to 2nd. Andrew Guillotte singles on a line drive to right fielder Kevonte Mitchell. Carl Wise scores. JC Cardenas to 3rd. Pitching Change: John Williamson replaces Carson Sands.

NYM vs STL to the 18th. happy to see both teams burning up their pitching...sad that i'm rooting for STL so NYM can fall further out of the WC chase.

James Russel with the two out walk in the 9th with 4 run lead. My problem with it is THROW THE FRICKING BALL IN THE ZONE. Only 2 of the 9 pitches he threw were in the strike zone. Yes you need to battle but gimme a break. Let him hit the damn ball. Or at the very least work the strike zone. If yiu make a mistake with a four run lead with 2 out in 9th err towards the strike zone. You don't need to K the 27th out.

EJax DFA'd. This is something Jim Hendry would have never done. I hope they can get an A-ball player for the guy. This will go down as Theo's worst contract with the Cubs. Just horrendous.

While the contract based on his previous stats was still too much, if his #s had been in line with the previous years he at least would have been palatable as a back end starter. For some reason or another they were far worse. While the DFA at this point was certainly needed I really was rooting for him to get it together because he seems like one of those truly amazingly nice guys and always seemed like he was truly hard to make it work. Never complained, never gave excuses, tried to make the bullpen work without saying anything. I hope he goes somewhere and becomes successful (just not the Cardinals).

In addition to not facing Cueto -- Chapman threw 44 pitches today. And the Reds still lost in extras. Nice.

So my hatred for the Cardinals has just been growing. Two weekends ago I was driving back home through St. Louis and a tornado warning forced me to stop in some hell hole of a gas station. Today a huge downpour forced me to stop again and while once again waiting out my chance to get out of this city I was listening to the ESPN broadcast during the rained out Angels game and they were asking Fans to call in with what they thought their team's biggest trading deadline needs were. Most fans who called in were at least somewhat reasonable than the Cardinals fan called in and said "yeah we need to get Cueto or Hamels and then we will have a guaranteed ticket to winning the World Series." He was such an entitled prick and embodied all things Cardinals baseball and that combined with these stupid storms just causes inordinate rage against this team. I think I need therapy!

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Oh my, now I will have nightmares of me sitting in the bowels of the Wrigley security detention cell.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.
