First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Hammel won against Miami on Friday (6 IP, 0 ER, 3 K, 2 BB). He’s 6-1 with a 2.24 in his 10 starts at Wrigley this year. Overall, the Angels are 14-66 (.212) against him. Trout is 4-13 with a HR.

Nolasco, acquired from the Twins at the deadline, was lucky enough to get a no-decision against the A’s in his first start with the Angels (6 IP, 5 ER, 4 K, 0 BB). The Cubs are 26-80 (.325) against him. Heyward is 8-23 with a HR.

Martinez (10-7, 3.29) and the Cardinals versus Lester (12-4, 2.93) tomorrow at 7:05pmCST to open the four-game set.

You guys woulda enjoyed Puig's single off the top of the wall last night in Des Moines. He skied a homer in the 1st that just barely made it out and then hit a ball much harder in the 2nd that he musta figured was gone cuz I coulda had a standing two-bagger when it caromed just below the yellow line at the top of the fence. Nobody accused him of hustling in & out to RF between innings either.

This LaStella business is such bullshit. After reading all of the comments from the key players, I felt like I had just been drugged. Everyone is using doublespeak and dancing around the issue of a precious and insubordinate benchplayer. I don't get it.

Reading between the lines, I get the feeling that LaStella has mental health issues (bipolar or depression) and the Cubs have been massaging his issues since they acquired him to get the most out of his talent.

Yeah, the psychologist was a giveaway. I'm most perplexed why Jed and Maddon went out of their way yesterday to say that it was not a personal issue. It invited more scrutiny. If they had said it was something personal, most everyone would have left it alone.

I personally said "health" reasons and not "mental health" intentionally, because the fact is, none of us have a clue what is mental and what is not. With that said, given the way teammates were talking, and given allusions Maddon and Hoyer made...this isn't simply a disgruntled employee in my opinion

I think you may wish to be cautious in your inference. I don't know that talking to a mental health professional (not knowing exactly what about) reveals that he is bipolar, depressed, suicidal, etc. It is possible (hard to believe), that he took the forced "pause" to admit he just doesn't like doing this gig anymore? It happens every now and then in pro sports. Look at Barry Sanders for Pete's Sake. Many of these guys have been doing this for 20+ years. I am just saying it is also possible. We may not find out until the end of the season - so it certainly is rather odd - but I am gonna wait and see before drawing final conclusions.

things have gotten so weird i quit speculating, myself. none of this is playing out as expected even with a wide range of expectations. nothing that has come out recently has made any of it any easier to narrow focus. all we know is we are most likely are not being given the real story as of now and every new detail only muddies the waters. baseball has an insane pay grade on the MLB level and a limited amount of time for most players to tap into it. he's made about $1.5m (before taxes) doing it so far, and that's a lot of money (even after taxes), but he's 27 years old and walking away now would really set back his earning potential and narrow his window to cash in on it.

Agree with this. The leap from not wanting to go to the minors to "he must have mental health issues" is a bit much. Players talk to sports pyschologists for other reasons than "mental health" issues. Someone in the media, forget who, speculated that maybe LaStella just doesn't have the passion for the game, and maybe an unexpected demotion has made him think twice about what he wants to do with his life. I don't agree with his decision to not report, though.

I think the contract was still a good one even if starting 2 games in August is just about right. He was a very valuable piece last year and even if his throwing and batting took a severe drop this year (though he wasn't great at throwing last year either) he has still played a valuable roll with his game calling and ability to manage pitchers. Him here with Ross has allowed Contreras to get worked in slowly which he obviously needed. It is interesting that Hendricks and Lackey have both made a much bigger point the last couple games to praise Contreras for calling a good game when they didn't say anything the first chunk of games with him behind the plate. It seems he is quickly learning but he has had a safety net in case he struggled and next year Montero can be the backup and that is fine because he can still call a good game and manage pitchers and that is what you ask for in a backup catcher. I'd actually rather have Contreras catch Lester though as he is much better controlling the run game.

i liked the trade that brought him here, but it really hurts how bad his D has become even if one wants to ignore the bat because he's a C. it also doesn't help that C/1st are probably the only 2 positions he could handle and i don't think he's ever played 1st. keeping him on the 25-man roster going into next season seems like a longshot at this point. trading him for any type of savings seems like a longshot, too.

I also doubt he's an 8-figure backup catcher. I think the Cubs go a different route to back up Castillo with Schwarber as the emergency/spot guy. Where I disagree is the return. The Cubs could definitely get someone to take that whole contract. Miggy would have to 0-fer the rest of the season for that not to happen. They may not get much back. However, if they had the means to eat some money and make him cheap to a small-market team I bet he'd even fetch an interesting prospect.

a big problem is his C skills are in the toilet. he's in the crouch and about all you can count on him for is to catch the ball, snag a few wild ones that are close, and call a game. his movement and arm has seen better days. he's too slow/lumbering to play LF. he might be able to handle 1st, but he's hasn't played there since a few games of winter ball in 2009. his walks + chance of power are positives, but what he's got doesn't even make him a decent DH option. unless he shows something in his limited chances down the stretch, i dunno if a market will develop for him that will return anything significant for the cubs...money savings or talent.

Batting under .200. Throwing out 2 of 360 base runners. 8 figure salary. I don't see anyone wanting to touch that contract without significant cash offset.

still no word on strop, but with strop/rondon not around for a while (hopefully a short while) that chapman trade is looking at bit better. hefty as hell pricetag, but needed worse than ever...or not given the lead...whatever. chapman Ks the side for his 4th cubs save... 6.2ip 2h 0bb 11k, 1er

Why wasn't Chapman brought in to face Trout in the eighth--best on best? Carl Edwards did great, and that may be much more important in the long run. But the whole closer thing is ridiculous.

post-game news on strop doesn't sound good. MRI tomorrow on knee and maddon is already discussing him as if they know a DL trip is in the works at a minimum. maddon also said smith will have a greater role in the pen...neat...awesome.

DSL Cubs #2 closer Luiz Escanio receives 144-game PED suspension after testing positive for the anabolic androgenic steroid Boldenone. This was Escanio's second PED suspension in the last 14 months (he was suspended 72 games after testing positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol in June 2015).  

144 games is considered a minor league season, although short-season leagues actually play less than half that many games.

Escanio is 24 years old and has spent four seasons in the DSL (meaning he would not have been able to return to the DSL again next season), and so his career is probably over, unless he can make the AZL Cubs or Eugene roster in 2018 (presuming he hasn't been released in the meantime).

He's only had 3 starts giving up 4 or more runs and 2 of those were the same stretch everyone else was struggling too and he actually has the 3rd best ERA. That 10 run game made his season look worse than its actually been.

    That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.
