Lester beat the Giants on Friday (7 IP, 2 ER) in the second game of the four-game sweep. He is 3-0 with a 1.84 over his last four starts. Lester has a 2.01 ERA in three starts against MIL, including his first win (7 IP, 0 ER) as a Cub on May 1 at Wrigley. The Brewers are 11-59 (.186) against him. Braun is 3-10.

This is Cravy’s 4th big league start--don’t y’all wish you had a name that rhymed with gravy?--and the second since he replaced Lohse in the Brewers rotation. He lost to the Cards his last time out (5 IP, 6 ER). None of the Cubs have faced him.

Go Cubs!

4 stolen bases and an error on a pick off throw in one inning. I logged on just to see what Crunch had to say about it.

Lester was late covering first but it probably didn't matter. It was a high chopper that took a long time to get down and the runner may have been able to beat the throw anyway. Still, Lester needs to break to cover first immediately and he didn't do that.

oh you know, it'll get fixed when it continues to happen after the season. this statement is based on absolutely nothing, but let's pretend it's happening and it's not going to happen for a few games until the offseason. let's pretend the leads don't matter, too...also, let's pretend any single should score a run from 2nd or move a runner from 1st to 3rd even if it's a weak single that shouldn't give up a couple bases. there, that should be good for a few hours of fun. have fun. :D

Not a big problem during the regular season. Could be a big problem in a one game playoff game if the Cubs don't score a run early. But I always felt when the Cubs have not been good this year that it's been because their run production has sucked. Especially RISP. What's nice about this streak is the lineup has been Schwarberized.

I'd rather have Arietta too but I've listened to several people say Lester has been working on the pickoff move and it is pretty insane he can't do it so my new hypothesis is this: he's purposely doing it this badly now because they are still winning and during the playoffs he's gonna pick a bunch of people off with his suddenly great move. You know it would take more than one good pickoff for people to stop trying. I like to believe this is true.

Hmmm… perhaps we should just pull all our outfielders into the infield when Lester is pitching. This would stop any ground balls and turn them into automatic outs. If someone hits it out of the infield it will probably be a triple. That’s the same thing that will happen if they get a single now...they end up on third.

Bit of history Went here today https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_Park -cy young threw first pitch there ~worst mlb team played here Spiders ~ruth hit Homer #500 ~Cobb Lajoie Paige played there Just love the feel of history, very short porch in right 460 to Center ~hoofaa~

The Cubs schedule just got significantly more difficult...only 6 more games left with the Brewers. Season ends with 3 in Milwaukee.

Harry would have called him Al Mora. Not only has Almora raised his average 30 points in ten days, he's walked six times and struck out...wait for it...once. Once, y'all. Una vez. I assume the management will just let him roll, hopefully finishing on a high note for the season. Then--okay, I'm crazy optimistic after the last couple of weeks--2016 will be some combination of the process that brought us Bryant and Schwarbeard this year. All the experts said Almora's bat-on-ball skills would justify bringing his glove to the big leagues, so maybe now he's pulling it all together. This is a lot more fun than flipping vets for prospects at the deadline...

One last comment for this evening: I watched the post-game interview with Maddon. Somebody asked him about Lester's issues with holding runners. He said the usual things about how he's doing okay in spite of it, but then he said something along the lines of "one of these days, he's going to have an epiphany" and realize he has to fix those things. One, crunch, I hope that makes you feel a little better after you scream "why the f*** didn't you notice that in Arizona?" and two, I love having a Cubs manager who uses the word "epiphany," correctly too.

Old Style, I like what you like about Maddon, but I've also been impressed by his intensity. Is meanness too strong a word? (Ask Jason Hammel.) If you don't have a manager as tough and mean as the guys in red hats like La Russa and Matheny, you're not going to beat them.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.

busch is having a really intense k-filled mini slump.  he deserves better after coming back to wrigley after that hot road trip.
