Hendricks had a no-decision against the White Sox on Friday. He gave up 5 ER in 3.1 innings, but the Cubs went on to win 6-5. He had a no-decision in Atlanta (5.2 IP, 1 ER) in July. The Braves are 4-19 (.211) against him.

Miller has not won a game in over three months (May 17), including his last outing against AZ (7 IP, 1 ER, 10 Ks). His ERA is 9th in all of baseball, but the Braves are averaging 2.71 runs in his starts. The Cubs beat him in Atlanta in July (6 IP, 1 ER). They are 13-69 (.188) against him. Denorfia is 3-4, and Soler is 3-7 with 2 HR.

Go Cubs!

You may wish to correct the lineup to reflect that Hendricks is pitching and batting 8th, not Arrieta. I know, cut-and-paste gremlins...

I only got to watch the first part of this on gamecast but it seemed like Shelby Miller was dominating our lineup and has been an ace this year and so man it's nice to see us win one where he seemingly looked great vs Hendricks who seemingly was awful. This was a game beforehand where I wouldn't have been sad if we had lost cause of the matchup. So nice too to see how this team responds to losing streaks and really limits them.

Terrific win! Once they were down 3-1 to Miller, I had started to write this one off. Nice work by the hitters to grind out some runs (with help from the Braves's defense) and 4 shutout innings by the pen. Despite giving up a lot of hits, I thought Hendricks was OK -- unlucky on the 2 runs he gave up on the double -- could have been out of the inning before the damage was done.

Hendricks wasn't awful. He actually had a pretty gutty performance. Ran into a little bad luck and got out of some tough jams. The Markakis double was on a batting practice pitch though, a slow curve if I remember right down the middle that started breaking too late. Miller seemed to really be dealing early and I am not a good enough observer of pitching mechanics to see that anything changed other than the Cubs hitters started finding their timing on him. A lot of the things I was worried about making this team a .500 team - basically that there were so many rookies, is actually now a plus. Those rookies usually don't all have bad games on the same day. Schwarber couldn't get it going yesterday. No problem, Bryant stepped up. Addison Russell has quietly added about 50 points to his BA since the All Star game, btw. This is fun.

...and Marlon Juice Byrd starts his SF career off with a 2-run bomb in the first. SF up 3-0 after the top of the first with MadBum pitching.

I'm even more concerned than usual over Haren's start tomorrow...having him follow Hendricks means the Braves hitters are already geared for 88mph stuff, since they saw it today. I know the Cubs moved things around to get Jake more starts, but having the two soft-tossers back-to-back doesn't seem like a good idea.

I kinda realized today that the Cubs don't have enough pitching to get very deep into the playoffs. Most good playoff teams these days have three stoppers they can throw at you. Cubs have one. It's not a bad thing at all if the Cubs don't get deep into the playoffs - getting there will be a win in my eyes. It will be interesting to see what TheoCorp does to try to build the staff next year. They've been trying the shot in the dark approach and scored with Arrieta, free agency and got killed on Jackson, and the jury is still convening on Lester. Armchair GMing seems so much harder these days.

Ok, Mr. Olt Luggage Carrier, WHAT NL team has 3 "stoppers"? I'll grant you the Dodgers have two great pitchers with Grienke/Kershaw, but each Playoff-looking team has only that pretty much. After the first two, its no sure thing. I am hoping Hammel can pull it together or the team for sure will not have a deep run - should they make it.

You are agreeing with my point: I stated not one NL team had 3 "stoppers" which I can assume you mean "League Ace". Thank you. Lester has had streaks. In the 2nd half so far (including the recent disaster), he has a WHIP of 1.13, 10/Kpg, SO/BB of 4.89, OBA .243. The trend I would think is upward compared to early in the yr. His career Playoff ERA = 2.57 in 14 games with a 1.071 WHIP. I am not saying he will repeat this, but sample size is sample size here at TCR. Who the hell really knows with all this stuff?! The Nats were supposed to be World Champs this year, right? And I wasn't insulting you - just teasing you, O&B. Anyway, carrying Mike Olt's luggage is not a bad gig.

I guess I mean by stopper just three guys who can mow people down. How you define it is up to you. Anyway, the way this team is playing they can probably get by with what they have. Lester does need to step up his game, though. And yeah, three probably isn't needed this year. I kinda think the Olt window closed last year. That was what my whole rant last year was about Renteria, just seeing if he had the stuff to play. I have more doubts now than before, but I suspect he'll get a callup this september and if he can do what even veterans have a tough time doing, hit the ball in pinch hit situations, he may be able to land a job somewhere.

I don't think Lester has been mediocre. If you remove Detroit he has a 3.29 ERA which would be good for 16th in the NL which is pretty darn good for a 2nd starter (not to mention this includes his 1st couple starts which, in my opinion, can be thrown out). He's also pitched really well against the Pirates and Cardinals both which is good for the playoffs. Yes the Cards and Mets have better pitching than us but the Cards stuff isn't something anyone can understand how it happens and we have far better hitting than the Mets and better than the Cards. I'd say the Cards still have the advantage overall but get into the playoffs and the best team in the regular season seems to rarely win. Plus, it's good our guys are going through their struggles now while we still have a buffer over the Giants. Let's see what happens over the next couple weeks before jumping to any conclusions. He isn't as good as I hoped but he is far from mediocre.

while we still have a buffer over the Giants. --- One more thought about the 2nd wild card spot and the Giants. The Giants best post-season option is to win the west division and that is certainly possible. Since they are 1.5 games behind the Dodgers, the Cubs "buffer" should be looked at as the Dodgers record. This makes the buffer only 2.5 games (assuming the Giants play up to the Dodgers. Opposed to the Dodgers playing down to the Giants). Just keep winning but hope for both Giant and Dodger losses as big plusses.

Javy Baez 2-5 with a 3 run HR, 4 RBI, 2 runs, No walks, 2K. Smokies with a walk off win in the 12th: Tennessee Bottom of the 12th, 7-6 vs the Biscuits:
Anthony Giansanti singles on a ground ball to left fielder Johnny Field. With Jacob Hannemann batting, wild pitch by Mark Sappington, Anthony Giansanti to 2nd. Jacob Hannemann singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Patrick Leonard. Anthony Giansanti to 3rd. With Albert Almora Jr. batting, Jacob Hannemann advances to 2nd on defensive indifference. Albert Almora Jr. singles on a line drive to center fielder Tyler Goeddel. Anthony Giansanti scores. Jacob Hannemann to 3rd.
shortstop Andrew Ely went 4-4 including a walk for the Emeralds. He's hitting .330. Any comments on his prospect status? 2nd round pick, Donnie Dewees has his BA up to .265 playing CF and leading off.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
