Cubs @ Phillies: Haren vs. Harang (Game 142)

The bullpen has its day--and it’s grim.

CHC (82-59): RHP Dan Haren (9-9, 3.73)
PHI (55-88): RHP Aaron Harang (5-15, 5.02)
First pitch: 12:35pmCT

Haren had his best game as a Cub on Monday, going 7 strong innings of shutout baseball and winning in St. Louis. He’s 1-1 with a 4.50 in his 3 starts against Philadelphia this year. The Phillies are 24-131 (.262) against him. Ryan Howard has knocked 4 HR off of him.

Harang won in Boston (6.1 IP, 0 ER) his last time out. The Cubs are 33-99 (.333) against him. Montero is 13-33 with a HR, and David Ross is 5-15 with 3 HR (!).

Go Cubs!

file under the "look how far we've come" category per mlbtr...Bluejays trade for Darwin Barney from Dodgers. Barney to report to the Yankee's - Bluejays game today.
Barney, 29, appeared in two games for the Dodgers this season and spent the rest of the season in Triple-A. At Oklahoma City, Barney slashed .277/.325/.354 with four homers and seven steals across 96 games.

dan haren would look really good this offseason...off the roster and sipping beverages from his couch at home.

via dem rotowurlds... "Jorge Soler (oblique) will remain on his rehab assignment with High-A Myrtle Beach until the conclusion of their playoff series. It's a best-of-five series that could run through Friday if it goes all five games. The Cubs had indicated that Soler would be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, but it's now looking like it won't happen until next weekend's series against the Cardinals."

phllies manager risking turning a triple with 2 outs into a HR by challenging the call. ...and the call stands...after a 6m+ review...because pace of game.

On the bright side, Harren managed to out pitch Francisco Liriano who got knocked out in the third inning against the Brewers. Milwaukee up 6-1 over the Pirates in the fourth

someone's behind the plate scouting k.giles (PHI closer)...taking gun readings and immediately reporting via wireless to someone in the stadium. i can't imagine what that's for.

This day sucked. Stl/Pitt win. Wash won. SF winning. Tomorrow is the last day off of the season. Well placed before the Pitt doubleheader

Five runs in the ninth off of Huston Street after he got the first two men out. The Astros score 2 runs, then hit a one hopper to Featherston at second for the final out, but the ball wedged in his glove so he couldn't throw to first. Jed Lowrie follows with a three run pinch-hit home run just inside the base of the foul pole.

greinke throws 8 innings of sharp shutout ball. the CY has been his to lose and he's holding on tightly.

day off today...then 4 vs PIT and 3 vs STL over 6 days...lot of day games in those 2 series, too (5 out of 7 games, 5 out of 6 days).

I have a question for AZ Phil. Do you think that Starling Peralta should be added to the roster this winter? Thanks.

HAGSAG: I think Starling Peralta will probably be offered a 2016 minor league successor contract (he was offered one last year when he was a minor league FA for the first time, and he accepted it), and then he will have to decide whether to remain in the Cubs organization for another season (he has yet to get past AA), or try his luck in another organizatioin.

If I had to guess, I would say he will probably decline another successor contract and sign with another organization.

The post-2015 Cubs minor league free-agents who are much more likely to be added to the MLB 40-man roster are Southern League batting champion catcher Willson Contreras, PCL Pitcher of the Year RHP Carlos Pimentel, and RHP Felix Pena.

Contreras is a virtual lock to get added to the 40, Pimentel signed a minor league successor contract with the Cubs last year and so he probably won't do it again (so they would need to add him to the 40 to keep him from leaving), and Pena is a first-time minor league FA and so he probably would sign a 2016 minor league successor contract if offered one, although if he does he would become eligible for selection in the December 2015 Rule 5 Draft.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.

Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous.

As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.

cubs sign dan straily...for some reason.  minor league deal.

    welcome back.

zac rosscup is down in mexico trying to make it happen...maybe they could throw him a contract, too.  junior lake is his teammate.  shore up a bunch of holes with some washups.

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.
