Brewers @ Cubs: Anderson vs Lackey (Game 147)

Cubs 5, Brewers 4 (10)
W: Chapman (4-1); L: Boyer (2-4)
PREVIEW
MIL (66-81): RHP Chase Anderson (8-11, 4.53)
CHC (93-53): RHP John Lackey (9-8, 3.35)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lackey gave up 2 ER in 6 innings and took the loss in Houston on Saturday. He’s 0-1 with a 3.00 in his two starts against the Brewers this season. Overall, they are 23-87 (.264) against him. Nieuwenhuis is 4-7 with a HR.

Anderson kept the Cards off the board for 5.2 but ended up with a no-decision his last time out. He’s 1-0 with a 1.93 in his two starts against the Cubs this year. For their careers, the Cubs are 4-40 (.100) against him for some reason. Heyward is 2-10 with a HR.

Oh yeah, and with the Cardinals’ loss to the Giants, the Cubs have won the NL Central.

Davies (10-7, 3.87) versus Arrieta (17-6, 2.91) at 3:05pmCST tomorrow afternoon.

Go Cubs!

Fun line up today: Szczur (RF), Baez (SS), Sole (LF), Contreras (C), Coghlan (1B), Almora (CF), La Stella (3B), Kawasaki (2B), Lackey (P)

I like that they didn't celebrate last night. Heyward: "We only celebrate after wins." Of course, they'll celebrate today even if they lose.

The way Heyward has been hitting he should bathe in champagne whenever he gets a hit :)

6 game lead on Nats for home field...16 games to go. Definitely would prefer not face Kershaw and Hill in first round, although any team in a 5-game series is probably gonna present some serious challenge.

I don't know how each team's respective rotations are shaking out, but If the NL wild card remains close, than Cubs could lose the small advantage of the wild card which is not facing their top pitcher in the first game or two. Potentially, Bumgarner/Cueto or C. Martinez or N. Syndegaard would have to pitch that Saturday or Sunday before the wild card game to get them into the wild card game and then be available for a Game 1 or Game 2.

They took 2 of 3 from Mets at home and 2 of the games were 1-run games.

Regardless, they're very good and have a cupcake schedule the rest of the way.

@ ATL, @MIA, @ PIT, vs. ARZ(4) , vs. MIA

But 6 games in 16 is a lot to catch up to. Really 7 since Cubs own tie-breaker.

Cubs get

vs. MIL, vs. CIN, vs. STL, @ PIT(4), @ CIN

@BenBadler Here's every pick from yesterday's Dominican League winter ball draft, where Eloy Jimenez went No. 1 overall: http://bit.ly/2cFbBPG

Also, someone didn't close their bold tag. You are a bad, bad person.

I'm just here because crunch said something about Almora's feeble bat and yup there goes a homer.

Nit picking, but I think that Bryant continues to bat 2nd unless and until Schwarber catches fire--especially given than Schwarber's will probably be running somewhat tentatively next year. Rizzo and Schwarber back-to-back is no problem, since Rizzo does just fine against left-handed pitching anyway, and Soler or Szczur can be subbed for Schwarber as a pinch-hitter/defender late in the game.

Hip Hip Jorge leaves game with "right side tightness" Montero now catching with Willson moving to LF

So, I did some quick math today regarding the playoff histories (since 1995, the first Wild Card postseason) of teams that have lead their league or lead MLB in win-loss in the regular season. I think there's a couple of ways to interpret what the numbers mean, but this is what I found. Teams that lead their league in win-loss went on to appear in the World Series 33% of the time (14/42). Teams that lead their league in win-loss went on to win the World Series 19% of the time (8/42). Teams that lead the majors in win-loss went on to appear in the World Series 38% of the time (8/21). Teams that lead the majors in win-loss went on to win the World Series 14% of the time (3/21). Teams that lead the National League in win-loss only went on to win the World Series once in 21 years (ATL in 1995). That's a small sample, of course, but it's what we have since the playoffs took basically the format they have today. You can look at that as half empty and say, leading the league in wins only gives you a 33% chance to win the pennant, and a 19% chance to win the World Series! Or you can look at it as half full: Teams that lead their league in wins had a 32% better probability of winning the pennant and 52% better probability of winning the WS than they would've had from a mere coin flip. So maybe the playoffs aren't a total crap shoot. Unless you happen to be an NL team. In that case, the playoffs prove to be what baseball is so often: a rack upon which our mortal notions of meaning and prediction are so thoroughly broken. [Note: Probability seems like not the right word since these numbers only show past outcomes and have no demonstrable predictive value--and I'm sure anyone who did better than skate by in STAT can point out mistakes in vocabulary, arithmetic, and interpretation.]

you (essentially) have a 25% chance to make the World Series (2 of 8) if you make the playoffs (not quite anymore with the 1-game WC)

you have a 12.5% chance to win the World Series (1 of 8 teams). Having the best record seems to be a slight advantage, albeit quite miniscule and nothing you should bet any real money without real good odds.

best job in baseball... he gets to hang around and watch a game from the dugout, maybe catch some casual pre-game warmup, fly around the country, and get paid about 83K a month + meal money on the road to do it.

Miggy with the Jim Edmonds Special -- take aim at the left-center basket and hit fly balls that way. Nice way to kick off the celebration -- Addy even snuck in an RBI.

It would have been nice if they had won in the ninth, save Chapman some wear and tear. Baez saw six pitches, not one of them a strike.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Oh my, now I will have nightmares of me sitting in the bowels of the Wrigley security detention cell.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.
