Cubs @ Pirates: Hendricks vs. Morton (Game 146)

The Cubs win a nutty game in extras and now look to gain some ground.

Arrieta lulled the Pirates into a false sense of security by pretending to be human. If that had been the wild card game, it would have taken years off of my life.

CHC (83-61): RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 4.08)
PIT (87-58): RHP Charlie Morton (9-7, 4.02)
First pitch: 11:35amCT

Hendricks won in Philly on Friday (6.2 IP, 3 ER). He’s 0-1 with a 5.63 in his three starts against the Pirates this year. They are 18-67 (.269) against him. Alvarez is 3-8 with a HR.

Morton beat the Brewers (6 IP, 2 ER) his last time out. He’s managed to avoid the Cubs all year, but they are 26-79 (.329) against him. Castro is 12-27. Coghlan is 4-10 with a HR.

Splitting the series would be fine, but not if we want to have home field in the wild card game, which seems a little more important now. Get ‘er done, Kyle.

Go Cubs!

Sounds like Soler will be back for the Cardinals series. http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/cubs-expecting-jorge-soler-back-cardinal… More on how he will likely be used: “Jorge is in the minor leagues right now still trying to get back up here,” Maddon said. “Once he gets back up, we’ll figure (his role) out. I guess he’s swinging the bat OK right now and once the Pelicans are done with their playoff run, we’ll make that evaluation. But Jorge knows, if he’s playing in right field and we’re winning in the later part of the game, we’re probably going to put somebody else out there. “The veterans are really good about this. If you look at the veterans on this team, they all understand what this is all about. Chris Denorfia’s done it for awhile. Austin Jackson, playing in the National League for the first time, gets it. “All of this stuff is pertinent, man.” http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2015/09/15/joe-maddon-talks-jorge-soler-rec…

Do you get the impression that Maddon is not the biggest Soler fan--that he's a little sorry Myrtle Beach won the championship needing only six games? I do. In any case, JoMad is very big on defense. He loves Baez at short and third, which has moved not only Castro but sometimes Bryant over to the right side of the diamond, and earned Russell some innings on the bench. It will be interesting to see if he takes a shine to Almora in spring training. That's actually a big test for Almora, to see if he can impress a defense-oriented manager. I have no idea if Almora is as good a defender as advertised. So much prospect hype is just regurgitated.

Soler flying in to Pitt today. Should be available. Lineup per mlb.com: Fowler, Schwarber, Coghlan (RF), Rizzo, Bryant, Montero, Russell, Hendricks, LaStella (2B)

That looked awful. Have to think Kang is out for a while. Really hope Pitt doesn't go after one of our guys now.

4-19 with RiSP yesterday 1-9 with RiSP today, through only 3 innings. With home run power eluding them, this is proving to be a problem.

i dunno if they'd give up on k.hendricks just yet, especially since he's got a lot of club control left and his stuff probably wouldn't improve much out of the pen since he's a crapballer. adding another starter worthy of easily pushing ham to the 4-slot in the rotation would be a hell of position to be in. ham could be a #2 or #3 starter on a whole lot of clubs in any given season.

yeah, i assume they're going to have to add for depth in addition to highly pursued guys, too. i was musing on the "pencil these guys in" aspect. i'm working under the assumption that a 1-2 slot quality starter will be aggressively pursued and they'll add some fringe/capable guys to pad things out. there's no expected MLB-ready starters in the pipeline (that i know of...aside from j.turner) and they're going to have to stuff the minors or pen with guys who can step into that role.

I would assume they'll go into the season with 3 quality starters locked in + Hammel, and then have several to fight for spot 5, with Hendrick penciled in. Priorities: 1. Starting Pitching 2. Bullpen 3. Lead Off guy - still hope they are willing to pay for Fowler. Love how many pitches he sees leading off, not to mention his ability to make things happen.

Based on today's C Richards outing. Haren has got to pitch tomorrow. As I (we) have discussed all year, the Cubs have no MLB-ready impact arms in the minors. It sucks at times like these when they have to pitch noodle-arm scrap-heap pitchers like Haren in the thick of a pennant race. Its STILL gonna be a year or two until said arms are available to the big club, so they will for sure make a trade for one guy over the winter and pay for a premium FA and reliever for the others. Hendricks is a #5+ and needs to be absolutely perfect in every outing. Just not gonna happen yet. However, I seem to remember both Steve Trachsel and Shawn Estes pitched a couple very crucial 2003 games for Dusty's club when they otherwise were very Haren-esque. They came through only then. Then, dropped for the Playoffs. Of course he should have dropped Dave Veres, but that's another story.

Squeeze bunt with a 9-4 lead seemed a little un-necessary and unproductive, with the pitcher coming up next. Don't really get that one.

Cubs 9-39 in last two games with RISP. The fact that they have had 39 at bats with runners in scoring position in two games is an impressive stat.

That's a .230 average. Which is right in line with the team's .243 average overall, but a little lower than the .250 non-pitcher average. But regardless, not too surprising. Agree that 39 ABs in two games with RISP seems impressive, though. Then again, if some of those ABs brought the runners in, as we'd prefer, there would be fewer ABs with RISP overall.

Now cubs go home and Pirates face a rough roadtrip with Greinke/Kershaw out of the gate. Home Field for WC definitely in play now! This was a big game to steal, now we have 2 rough pitching matchups, but being at home should give us a chance to steal at least one.

On a big Pirates blog, about 75% think the play was dirty and Coghlan went in with the intent to injure. You know, if it was Russell on the receiving end, I may have thought the same thing. I think he was absolutely trying to break up the DP, and technically legal because he could touch the base, but his right leg was well off the ground and borderline in that unwritten rule of keeping the leg below the knee. Anyway, I feel the Pirates fans pain, but the talk of ending Coghlan's career, or trying to take out Rizzo or Bryant is obnoxious.

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.

busch is having a really intense k-filled mini slump.  he deserves better after coming back to wrigley after that hot road trip.

i know alzolay isn't having a great time right now, but i trust hector "ball 4" neris even less than alzolay based on what i've seen coming out of their arms.

  • azbobbop (view)

Neris reminds me of Don “Full Pack” Stanhouse.

Happ, Busch, Dansby and Madrigal have a combined 25 runners left on base through 7 innings, with Busch accounting for 9 of those.  Seems like a lot.

PCA finally gets a hit!  2r HR!!!

They certainly could be coupled. It could also be the case that a team needs good players at the heart of the team and if they are not coming from one source (development) they have to be sought out elsewhere. I don't see the evidence needed to infer the cause.

bases loaded for the cubs, 0 out...and no runs score.
