Game 1 Thread / Cubs @ Reds (1 of 3)

Baseball is back, Baby! Cubs vs. Reds, Zambrano vs. Harang, 98 years of demons vs $130 million payroll. The 2007 season begins in a few short moments and we'll find out if the team is ready, there's no doubt we as fans are for the season. A few site notes before we get started. Don't forget to get your vote in on your chat program of choice. Whatever is ahead tomorrow morning when I check will be the winner for the year. Also, the detailed previews of years past is a thing of the past. Sorry. Too much time looking up lineups and stats that could be used for writing more in-depth articles. So welcome to preview-lite, a simple open thread with the starters for the day and if the lineups are out when I do these, you might get those as well. As for game, the Cubs started out the last few years blowing out their Opening Day opponent and then finding ways to disappoint us for the rest of the season, so if today is a close game or if we happen to lose, not the worst thing that could happen. ------ Chat (We'll use Geesee for today, log-in in the bottom right) Carlos Zambrano vs. Aaron Harang Soriano CF, Murton LF, Lee 1b, Ramirez 3b, Jones RF, Barrett C, Derosa 2b, Izturis SS, Zambrano P Freel CF, Dunn LF, Phillips 2b, Griffey Jr. RF,  Encarnacion 3b, Hatteberg 1b, Gonzalez SS, Ross C, Harang P

WooHoo!!! No chat for me. Just got a call with a last-minute ticket to the Rockies/D-Backs. Not the Cubs, but Opening Day nonetheless. It's going to be 72 here with some high, fluffy, friendly clouds -- Life is Good! I'm going to be tortured watching the Cubs numbers go up each inning on the out-of-town scoreboard with no highlights until I get home. But that's just the sacrifice I'll have to make!

Just heard Bruce Levine on the radio ... pending Trib sale tanks Z's contract until further notice ... he is almost definitely headed toward free agency now. D'OH!

If we lose Z to gain a new owner....... ugh ugh ugh. Will have to wait and see I'm stuck in office hours for another two hours, with no one coming. Bought the mlb web TV feature, but it keeps dropping out. This is very, very frustrating. Baseball is happiness. Life interference with watching baseball is madness.

I'm not sure I buy the Z thing. The goal is to drive up the value of the franchise, not diminish it, and signing Z at a reasonable 5x80 would definitely be a good thing.

IMO, Jim and Lou have done an excellent Job up to this point, assuming the rumors about the Zambrano deal is close. Jim,Lou,Pat,Ron,Len, and Bob= WIN WIN WIN

I'm too sick to go to work...is there some kind of event going on today????? What's all the fuss???? >

MLB.com put in a new feature blackout control feature so that I cannot log in and watch the game. If you think I am an A-hole on TCR, get a recording of this call I am about to make to their customer service.

WPZ, I don't understand why the sale of the Tribune would tank Z's contract negotiations. The sale of the Trib is not suppose to be final until the end of the 4th quarter. Are the Cubs going to just stop business until the sale is over?

Levine said something about not committing to long-term contracts. I didn't catch all of it, sorry. By the way, Ed Farmer's duaghter was in a car accident and Steve Stone is calling the Sox game. Indians threatening in the top of the 1st.

I'd assume that was Levine theorizing and not something relayed by McD or Hendry. A lot of analysts were saying the same thing at the beginning of last offseason -- no way the Cubs resign Ramirez, etc. because they'll be up for sale and new owners won't want the contracts. It just doesn't make sense from the Trib's point of view. It's in their best interest to get the highest value out of the franchise, and locking up a top starter in a long term, reasonable contract can't hurt that value. There's also the real possibility that Zell's buyout falls through for whatever reason.

Looks like Z is keeping up his spectacular opening game tradition of pitching like crap.

whoa, guys. i didn't think it'd be THAT quick. thanks (wish it were good news, though...)

bc--if you're in school and a student, get smart and don't get involved. The Cubs will break your heart....they'll change your life....you'll end up like us and spend hours every week talking to people you don't know on this internet thingie. Save yourself. Read books.

FInal line on Jose Contreras: 1 IP, 37 pitches, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, Indians 7-2 top of the 2nd.

dunn, in contrast, has homered twice in three frames out of their #2 hole...

"Wes — April 2, 2007 @ 9:42 am Can somebody tell me WTF Jerry Narron is doing? Donkey in the 2-hole? I actually spit on to my keyboard when I read that." I think I'll just go back to bed. Sorry, Team. My fault.

Great start for Chicago baseball -- down a cumulative 12-2 , and the season isn't even an hour old yet. Z just walked another. Sheesh. When is the NFL draft?

...and now a wild pitch by Z. He clearly needs an Opening Day sports pyschologist. Hopefully, Hendry can leverage this clunker and cut, oh, maybe $10 million off of Z's deal.

If I'm Z , I've got my agent on the phone and Hendry heading to the dugout with that contract of his right now.

Adam Dunn in the number 2 hole is brilliant. The guy might strike out a ton, but he also walks a ton and is going to get lots of fastballs in that number 2 hole. Dunn can be an absolute monster in this league.

Nice bit of clutch hitting by Izzy -- DeRosa walks so Izzy can pop to short with the bases loaded and 2 out. Get used to it....

Yes, after DeRosa worked like a 10-pitch walk, Izturis pops up weakly to short on the first pitch. Yuck. Murton has looked TERRIBLE is 2 ABs... 2 K, swinging at bad pitches throughout.

The silver lining, I guess, is that they're at least making Harang WORK for his shutout innings. He's at ~80 pitches after 4 innings, so you know he won't be going deep into this game.

A gift run on a Freel freakout, but Ramirez can't pick up Lee from 3rd. I seem to recall Cincy having a pretty terrible 'pen, so we still have a good shot at pulling this one out.

I don't understand why Harang is effective. Fastball looks straight, and the slider really doesn't break. For whatever reason he is baffling our hitters.

harang throws stuff with late sink effectively...good control over it, too. he's hittable, but quality hits arent easy to come by.

Aaron Harang does a mighty fine impression of Greg Maddux. Smart pitcher who works in and out and keeps the hitter constantly off balance. Like Maddux, he also is a highly efficient worker out on the mound.

Ben Sheets on his way to pitching a complete game for the Brewers. Like people have been saying, the Brewers could be the team to beat in 2007. They might have the best starting rotation in the National League before it's over. And any lineup with young studs like Fielder, Weeks and Hall is something to get excited about. Imagine if they would have hung onto Carlos Lee.

"I told the ballclub it'll be business as usual," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Monday. "It will not be a distraction. The Tribune Co. will run the club this season, and we've got a job to do and nothing is going to change from our end." So how's Z's contract doing Jim?!

I look forward to tomorrow's game because I'm predicting a Cub RBI. Z is one of the best pitchers in a pitcher-poor league. An ace shouldn't hit 50 pitches in the third inning. And it's not like this is something new for him. He led the league in walks last year. He is fun to watch , I'll give him that.

I don't buy the Harang/Maddux analogy for a second. Maddux's pitches have huge movement that is visible on TV. Harang's stuff looks average at best. I say last year was a fluke, and he's back to being a .500 pitcher with an ERA in the mid 4s this year. As for the Cubs, that was a truly terrible game. Z was awful in all of the most predictable ways. The offense was impatient and anemic. Murton was absolutely clueless at the plate. Evidently Michael Barrett feels that when you're down 4 in the 8th, you should swing at anything close. This kind of loser approach should have been fixed in high school. GROSS.

Like I said, if Matt Murton gets off to a lousy start, then Hendry and Sweet Lou will have the ammunition they need to call up Felix Pie and move Alfonso Soriano to left field where he belongs.

“I told the ballclub it’ll be business as usual,” Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Monday. Yeah, same as usual...LOSING...

Well if we're going to rag on Murton for one bad game, then all I can add is that it's a damn good thing we had All-Star Cesar Izturis in the lineup, eh?

Carlos Zambrano is an exceptional pitcher. But he continues to prove that he is not true ace material, and not in the league of a Roy Oswalt, Chris Carpenter, etc. In a perfect situation, he is a stud # 2 pitcher on a team. Perhaps Ted Lilly can be the true ace of this staff in 2007.

Hmmm.. a lousy game from a starting pitcher, and the offense can't score. I am almost positive that I have seen this movie before. It sucked.

Well, on the positive side of things at least there is only 161 games and counting left of the Gin Hendry regime.

"Perhaps Ted Lilly can be the true ace of this staff in 2007." -------------------------------------------------------------- Perhaps Cesar Izturis will lead the team in home runs.

A loaded ballpark hotdog :$7.50 Logo Cubs hat $25.00 Getting to call out from work and watch your favorite baseball team score 1 run and give up 5? >$300,000,000!

someone turn up the humidor in Coors, back to video game baseball. (5-5 in the 4th) Harang pounded the strike zone for the most part, except that one inning where we loaded the bases and izturis then swung at the first pitch. Now I understand he was looking for a FB after a few walks and such, but maybe look for a fastball that's down the middle, not one up in your eyes that you'll pop up. Ramirez took some ugly swings at breaking stuff as well. Harang's a damn good pitcher, so it's a not a big shock.

There were just a few disappointing things about this game, besides the loss that is. Z not being ready for prime time on opening day...AGAIN. He had zero command and composure out there. Allowed five walks after only giving up 6 total in spring training. Anyone can give up two home runs to Adam Dunn, but that fifth inning was beneath him... very disappointing. Matt Murton striking out three times while batting 2nd. Apparently Matt is something less than a natural #2. Izturis swinging on the first pitch and popping up to end the inning after the previous two hitters had worked Harang deep into the count and he was one hit away from being in deep trouble. Tomorrow is another day, another day closer to bringing up Felix Pie.

Apparently Matt is something less than a natural #2. So you are going to make this judgment based on one game?

Felix Pie will be up for good by May 15th, with Soriano moving to left field on a permanent basis. That is my prediction.

there's so many things wrong with #64 it requires an entire reshuffling of the team and displacing 2 guys who pretty much can only play LF...

We won last yr 's opening game in Cincy 16-7...and look what a load of poo the season turned into. This smells different, smelly but different.

16-7 last year against Reds 16-6 in 2005 against Dbacks 7-4 in 2004 against Reds 15-2 in 2003 against Mets 1 of 162 folks...

cripes...only 161 games left to catch the Reds/Brewers? Look at it this way Big Z...you're still in a dead heat with Carpenter for the Cy Young.

The Cubs open the 2007 season April 5 at Round Rock. The Cubs' home opener will be April 13, when the Cubs host Round Rock at 7:05 p.m. A fireworks show will follow the game. I wonder who will be pitching for Iowa that night?

Prior won't be, he's staying back in Arizona for now. check cubs.scout.com for Iowa, Peoria and Knoxville rosters. Harvey appears to be starting the year in Daytona.

Apparently Matt is something less than a natural #2. So you are going to make this judgment based on one game? uh yeah. Natural #2 hitters don't strike out this quickly...and do it three times in one game. S,S,B, swinging strike four pitches Foul, Foul, swinging strike three pitches B, S, S, swinging strike four pitches He's got to make pitchers who throw stirkes pay for it with some contact or we'll start seeing Jones, Derosa, or Izzy in the two hole.

Holy crap! It's one freaking game guys!!! Take it easy. I am no Matt Murton fan, but you can't even come close to making an opinion on him hitting in the 2 hole yet. Wait until, I'd say, game 16 or 20. My GOD!

judging by today's game, I believe Aramis is not suited for the #4 spot because of the weak-ass swings he had at Harang's breaking ball. glad that's settled.... I think Ohman should be our closer too because he pitched well today... wow, just wow. Juan Cruz in the Dback game at the moment trying to keep the lead at one

Matt Murton sucks and will strike out approximately 486 times this year. Adam Dunn will hit 340 HRs this year. Ryan Freel will have 162 errors. Carlos Zambrano will have a 9.00 ERA for the season. Aaron Harang will win the NL Cy Young with a 34-0 record. Those are my predictions.

I know the expectations are high but jesus guys. Let's just be glad nobody got hurt. It was an ugly game and I was disappointed in Murton but maybe he was trying to do too much. He took some fastballs and you can't be shy about swinging the bat when you hit second in this lineup. I keep confidence in Murt but if he can't handle the two spot, DeRosa is always ready.

1st/3rd 0 outs already on Hawkins some things never change... actually really nice hit and run by Albert Callapso

Is anybody else having a lot of troubles with MLB.tv standard? When I try to load the OAKvsSEA game, I only get a green screen. What's the point in paying 14.99$ a month for this fucking awful service? Customer service/tech support is useless, too.

"Adam Dunn will hit 340 HRs this year." At some point, they'll just IBB him. "Is anybody else having a lot of troubles with MLB.tv standard?" Mine kept freezing. The picture would freeze but the audio kept going. Really annoying. I am chalking that up to Opening Day traffic. Mosaic worked great though.

I'm getting error after error. Also using the cheap service.

tough call here, do I watch King Felix versus the A's who I have on a fantasy team or do I go with O's/Twins to watch Santana/Bedard? Hmm...

Rob, if you looked at the stats of that game you would clearly see that Meche is the guy who deserves 17 mil a year and not Carlos Zambrano. Oh, and Curt Schilling is clearly finished as a pitcher.

BTW, it's currently Dave O'Brien, Rick Sutcliffe, and Dusty Baker working the O's/Twins on ESPN2. Dusty's struggling. Bigtime. And I thought his managing was bad.

luckily the mlb.tv feed is the local twins crew. b2b jacks off bedard..morneau/hunter King Felix looking filthy today, 7 K's through 5 ip

Cubs win! Cubs win! Cubs whaaa? Everyone calm down. Remember folks, it's a marathon (bring it kjk). Plenty of time to start slow, run hard, get injured, get on the Red Line and relax for 15 miles and then jump off two and a half blocks from the finish line. Happy Passover my Yiddishe friends! Don't forget to stock up on bran matzah. It lets my people go! I'm here all week.

Good grief! All I said was Murton isn't a "natural" . He's not. And before today he had a total of, what, 14 MLB at bats at #2. But then, as we all know, ANYONE CAN HIT SECOND. Except Felix Pie, who needs more seasoning.

good to know I'm not the only one shocked by it.... Gabor still in the league too.

Did you notice how Dusty Baker took credit for Corey's double? First thing he said was about how he had told Corey to expect the first-ball fast-ball against left-handers, just like that. I actually like listening to Dusty and Sutcliffe. Unlike Joe Morgan, they both sound like decent human beings who I could enjoy chatting with, even if I usually see a different game than what they see. (Whereas Morgan is both wrong AND a prick.) But man, I rolled my eyes at that comment from Dusty.

file under things I hope our division rivals keep doing along with the Cardinals lineup versus lefties yesterday...the astros have biggio and everett hitting 1-2 in front of Berkman.

I'm still reading the comments, but Towel in #51, I've said that as well: At the risk of getting killed on the streets, I agree. I've never seen Z as an "ace". I just don't see him as a leader, a-type personality guy. I know he's emotional, but it's an intangible thing. Maybe I'm crazy. I've always believed Woody was the clubhouse presence that's been missing on this club the past two years, but maybe Lilly can be that guy (i'd love it if he posted #1 numbers, but I'm optimistic, not completely nuts)

Stud #57-- I see what you're saying, but here's my 2 cents. An "ace", or a "leader" on the team, is the guy who inspires, leads, helps make the other guys better. It's the proverbial "team chemistry" rearing its ugly head, but I believe in it. That guy may or may not always post the best numbers. It's the team on paper vs. the team on the field. This team literally went to shit after DLee got hurt last year. I'm hoping this year Sori helps him shoulder some of that burden of carrying this team emotionally on his shoulders, because Aram could hit 100 HR and still not do it. It may sound shitty, but Sammy couldn't either, he just wasn't that guy.

One of my best friends in the world is a huge Mets fan (nobody's perfect). He watched a cub game last year or year before, a game they won, incidentally, and was shocked at how little dugout interaction there was between players. Call it what you want, hell, call it cubby swagger, I don't care, but that's what they had in 03, and that's what they need this year, and as a sidenote, it doesn't fucking matter if you've got a $30 mil payroll or a $300 mil payroll. Ok, I'm off my soapbox for now. =)

Oh my god Cubs lose... send Murton down, fire Piniella, cancel Z's contract. Look out 4th in the NLC, here come the Cubs. Chad:
Holy crap! It’s one freaking game guys!!! Take it easy. I am no Matt Murton fan, but you can’t even come close to making an opinion on him hitting in the 2 hole yet. Wait until, I’d say, game 16 or 20. My GOD!
My sentiments exactly. I happen to think Murt hit the ball on the ground too much last year to be a #2 hitter. At least if he's K'ing he's not GIDP'ing. :)

cwtp #72-- while I agree, I really like murton, I think it was "first time in the spotlight again" jitters. That said, Lou won't give him long before he swaps him, and personally I see him developing as a #5/6 guy myself anyway

"One of my best friends in the world is a huge Mets fan" Well, I've changed my opinion. If your Met Fan friend says this, then it must be right. Good Lord! Teams don't need to get along or even care about one another. Team chemistry is the single most overrated idea in sports. Especially in baseball, which is the most individual of all team sports.

Yeah, did the playoffs that year completely screw Lidge up forever? Or is he another "change of scenery" Oakland A waiting to happen?

Looking forward to seeing what Sosa does tonight. Of course I'll flip back and forth between the championship game unless it turns into a blowout. Anybody know if Sosa is DH'ing or not?

Chad, the point was it was an outside, not emotionally invested (like us) opinion. And if it doesn't matter, why have we seen the "small ball" and the smaller payroll WS champs that we've been seeing? Maybe I'm old fashioned, but a team full of A-Rods and Riveras can't do it all the time, often won't, ask Steinbrenner. Yes, they do need to get along somewhat, pull in the same direction. Fact is, if there was one guaranteed way to do it, everybody would. IMHO character has a lot to do with how you stack a team, not just stats or dollar signs

Manny, I read the link. Didn't realize the Tribune was one of America's most treasured newspapers. I know it was treasured by isolationists in the 1930s and treasured by Harry Truman in that famous photo but other than that... Maybe it's treasured because it's especially absorbent for the bottoms of bird cages and litter boxes.

Looking forward to seeing what Sosa does tonight. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- hehe, greeted with a cascade of boos before he K'd looking.

Wow. Scott Miller couldn't wait for a chance to rip the Cubs. 0-1 on the season and already getting ripped. That's rough.

the scouting report on sammy must be ugly...they just walked teix to get to sosa with 2 outs pushing men to 1st/2nd.

The thing I liked most from that game was Ramirez hustling to second base and beating that force play," Piniella said, finally, of a fourth-inning moment involving his third baseman, Aramis Ramirez. "That's the thing I liked best about the game today." same with me....

hell, i dont think sosa is swinging at breaking balls...that could be even worse than just laying off the outside breaker.

well, nothing away/in...still, that's the approach that worked for bonds...only bonds can hit almost anything in his selective zone, not just fastballs and hanging stuff. if sosa has shortened his zone...well damn sammy, would have been nice a few years ago.

Nah, that's not it, now that I think about it. Something was just *wrong* with Sammy. I remember his last home run derby, '05 I think it was... he WIFFED at the first pitch!

"that’s soooooooo 3/44…like ohmygawd." Hey! Are you guys mocking me?

the scouting report on sammy must be ugly…they just walked teix to get to sosa with 2 outs pushing men to 1st/2nd. man was on 2nd already and Teix had a 3-0 count before they decided to make it intentional.

2 years in a row the Cubs come out slugging in the first game and Fans are jumping up and down excited about how the offense is going to be good and ignoring the fact the offense is still populated by mostly shitty players. 1st game this year, they lose, and it is doom and gloom by an offense that looks and is expected to perform well. If you want to judge Murton off the 1st game of the season go ahead, but don't be upset if I call you a fucking dumbass for doing it.

"the fact the offense is still populated by mostly shitty players." I won't even argue Izturis, but outside of that, we have one the best hitting: 1B 3B CF C In the league. Then right field is not a shitty player. Matt Murton isn't a shitty player. DeRosa? You can have DeRosa and Izturis. Other than that, no shitty players

RobG, Bryan was correct in that I mistakenly reversed my answer to #8 and #9 in the predictions thread. Could you let him know for me? So Sayeth the God of WAR!

Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous.

As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.

cubs sign dan straily...for some reason.  minor league deal.

    welcome back.

zac rosscup is down in mexico trying to make it happen...maybe they could throw him a contract, too.  junior lake is his teammate.  shore up a bunch of holes with some washups.

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

  • crunch (view)

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.
