Can we just start playing in May?

The good doctor, Joseph Hecht, gives us the latest on Soriano's hamstring injury.... -------- April 19th has been a painful day for Cub players and fans for two years running. I painfully remember Nomar Garciaparra falling in a heap near home plate when he ripped his adductor muscle off the groin. Derrek Lee’s wrist fracture needs no instant replay for me to remember it. So when April 16th produces another injury to a star player I think we should just petition the powers that be to start playing the schedule May 1st. Len Kasper and Bob Brenly live on Comcast TV, after Alfonso Soriano grabbed the back of his left thigh, immediately recognized that he “tweaked” his hammy. Distal (near the knee) Hamstring injuries are tricky as far as how fast they heal. This is mostly because they can be easily reinjured or just leave lingering soreness. Usually it takes an extra week of rest even when they are healed enough to be pain free. Hence, it usually equals a stint on the DL, even with a “tweak”. Bruce Miles from the Daily Herald said:
The Cubs said Soriano was “day to day,” but he won’t play today as he undergoes an MRI. The disabled list is a possibility, but the Cubs will know more today.
“I feel better now,” said Soriano. “I don’t know yet (about the DL) because I feel better. I’ll get the MRI and see how bad it is. If it’s not bad, maybe I’ll be out five or six days. I believe it’s not bad. “Yeah, I’m worried about it. I don’t like to be hurt. I was out of the game today and I might not play tomorrow. It’s sad for me because I like to play every day.”
Carrie Muskat from Cubs.com said:
Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano will undergo an MRI on Tuesday on his left hamstring, which he strained on Monday night trying to catch a ball in center. His status was officially listed as day-to-day, but he may be sidelined for a few days. "I feel better than when it happened," Soriano said "They gave me a lot of treatment, and I feel better on my leg." But Soriano was limping as he left the Cubs clubhouse. "If it's not bad, I think I'll take five, six days or maybe a week," Soriano said. "I believe it's not that bad, it's not a big deal."
Paul Sullivan from the Tribune said:
Piniella said the hamstring strain was about 3-4 inches. Soriano will have an MRI taken Tuesday but said he doesn't think the injury is too severe and hopes to be back in 5-7 days.
Gordon Wittenmyer from the Sun-Times said:
Manager Lou Piniella said the medical staff told him a three-to-four-inch strain was evident, and Soriano was scheduled to have an MRI exam today. ''We're going to know more [today],'' Piniella said.Soriano said he didn't have a feel for whether the DL is necessary. ''If it's not bad, I want to take maybe, like, five or six days,'' he said.
If that's the best-case scenario, then count on a DL move. And a DL move means the Felix Pie era begins on the Northside. With the bad, sometimes comes the good.

It apparently is a pattern, April 16, 19 and 20...next year watch out for the 17th or 18th. (I'll pray for rain....where have you gone Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain? Joltin' Joe has left and gone away? Ugly mixing of lyrical metaphors? )

    That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

    seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

    I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

    In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”. 
    I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit. 
    “The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
    (Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
    Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

    Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue: 

    Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

    Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.
